Five years after an uprising killed Libya's Moamer Kadhafi, residents in the chaos-wracked country's capital joke they have grown to miss the longtime dictator as the frustrations of daily life mount.

Those living in the capital say they are exhausted by power cuts, price hikes and a lack of cash flow as rival authorities and militias battle for control of the fragmented oil-rich country.

"I hate to say it but our life was better under the previous regime," says Fayza al-Naas, a 42-year-old pharmacist, referring to Kadhafi's more than four decades of rule.

Today, "we wait for hours outside banks to beg cashiers to give us some of our own money. Everything is three times more expensive."

A UN-backed unity government has struggled to assert its authority nationwide since arriving in Tripoli in March, with a rival parliament in the country's far east refusing to cede power to it.

On Friday it suffered a new blow when a rival seized key offices in the capital and proclaimed the reinstatement of a third administration previously based in Tripoli.

The turmoil after Kadhafi's 2011 fall has allowed the Islamic State jihadist group to gain a foothold on Europe's doorstep after seizing the strongman's hometown of Sirte in June last year.

Forces loyal to the unity government have for five months been fighting to expel the last jihadists from the former IS stronghold, with support from US air strikes since early August.

With the loyalists weakened by the anti-IS battle, forces led by a controversial field marshal last month seized key oil terminals to its east, allowing the National Oil Company to resume crude exports.

The eastern parliament has thrown its support behind Khalifa Haftar, who presents himself as Libya's saviour in the face of a growing jihadist threat but is a hugely divisive figure.

- 'Chaos or military rule' -

While his army has ousted most jihadists from Benghazi, the birthplace of the 2011 uprising, his detractors accuse him of working towards the single goal of seizing power to establish a new military dictatorship.

"Libyans are forced to choose between two extremes: either chaos with militias and Islamist extremists as the dominant forces, or military rule," said Libya analyst Mohamed Eljarh.

"No other convincing options are on offer," added Eljarh, of the Rafik Hariri Centre for the Middle East.

Haftar's forces have fought for more than two years to expel jihadists from second city Benghazi, while pro-GNA forces are caught up in fighting IS in Sirte.

According to Libya expert Mattia Toaldo, these rival forces might then want to extend their influence in other areas of the country and be met with tough local resistance.

"It is hard to think that the country will be stabilised any time soon," said Toaldo.

"Libyans seem to have swapped a repressive centralised authoritarianism with a more decentralised and chaotic form of authoritarianism, be it under militias or under the rule of general Haftar."

The persistent chaos has also enabled human traffickers to step up their lucrative trade in the Mediterranean nation, with hundreds of migrants dreaming of Europe drowning off the Libyan coast.

And Libya has been the launchpad of deadly attacks on holidaymakers in neighbouring Tunisia.

While some Libyans mourn an easier life under Kadhafi, others stress that the chaos in Libya springs from decades of mismanagement under the dictator.

"The struggles of Libyans today are the logical consequence of 42 years of systematic destruction and sabotage" by the state, said Abderrahman Abdelaal, 32, an architect unable to find work in his field.

I'm not voting for Trump, but this is why I'm not voting for Hillary.

This forced regime change bullshit is more akin to bullying than actually helping anyone. But hey, as long as the arms industry has an endless war to sell endless guns and ammo to, fuck it, right?

These days it’s rather difficult to decipher parody from reality when it comes to the utterances of progressive college students.

Reason’s Robby Soave reports that at South Africa’s University of Cape Town this past week, students known as “Fallists,” which stands for (hashtag) “Science Must Fall,” told university officials that “the whole thing” — as in science — “should scratched off, especially in Africa.”

“How do we even start to decolonize science?” a Fallist panelist asks those assembled.

She follows up by saying that if one is “personally committed to enforcing decolonization,” since science is a “product of racism,” it all “should be scratched off.”

It’s hard to tell if the burst of crowd laughter that follows this statement is from disbelief … or out of uncomfortable politeness.

Essentially, these students believe that modern scientific understanding is too Eurocentric. One explained:

“I have a question for all the science people. There is a place in KZN called Umhlab’uyalingana. They believe that through the magic’ you call it black magic’ they call it witchcraft’ you are able to send lightening to strike someone. Can you explain that scientifically because it’s something that happens?”

Many people laughed at this remark because, well, witchcraft is not something that happens. But according to the student, witchcraft is like Isaac Newton’s theory of gravity—it’s just one way of explaining the world, among many.

“Decolonising the science would mean doing away with it entirely and starting all over again to deal with how we respond to the environment and how we understand it,” the student continued.

But don’t laugh too hard — they’re dead serious. Watch as one of the Fallist panelists admonishes an audience member — asking for an apology, and reminding everyone of the rules and the fact that the room is a safe “progressive space”:

“If you’re not going to do that, I would ask that you remove yourself from this space,” she adds.

Her colleague follows up by criticizing such “antagonistic” reactions, and noting that Fallists are “going to decolonize” by utilizing “knowledge produced by us … that speaks to us, and that is able to accommodate knowledge from our perspective.”

Wow.

The smartest thing she said was that she is “not on the science faculty.” That is patently obvious.

Department of State security officers found then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton so unpleasant they refused to work on her security detail, a former agent claims in newly-released FBI documents.

The FBI Monday released 100 pages of documents relating to its investigation of Clinton’s private email server. The documents incorporate summaries of several interviews the FBI conducted, including one with a woman who served as an agent with the State Department’s Bureau of Diplomatic Security (DS) during Clinton’s time as secretary of state.

https://vault.fbi.gov/hillary-r.-clinton/hillary-r.-clinton-part-04-of-04/view

During her interview, the agent said Clinton treated agents rudely and with contempt, and was so unpleasant that senior agents typically avoided being on her security detail.

“[Redacted] explained that CLINTON’s treatment of DS agents on her protective detail was so contemptuous that many of them sought reassignment or employment elsewhere,” the interview summary says. “Prior to CLINTON’s tenure, being an agent on the Secretary of State’s protective detail was seen as an honor and privilege reserved for senior agents. However, by the end of CLINTON’s tenure, it was staffed largely with new agents because it was difficult to find senior agents willing to work for her.”

The agent added that she had spoken to several Secret Service agents who reported similar poor treatment from Clinton.

The agent’s claim about awful treatment from Clinton is backed up by some claims from ex-Secret Service agents. Author Ronald Kessler has written several books about the Secret Service, and claims about Clinton treating agents nastily in private are numerous (Bill and Chelsea Clinton, on the other hand, are described positively).

According to the agent, Clinton didn’t just treat agents poorly. She reportedly disrespected U.S. ambassadors with her routine breaches of diplomatic protocol.

“From her own experience, and information obtained through [redacted] and other agents, [redacted] described a ‘stark difference’ between [Condoleezza] RICE and CLINTON with regard to obedience to security and diplomatic protocols,” the summary says. “RICE observed strict adherence to State Department security and diplomatic protocols while CLINTON frequently and ‘blatantly’ disregarded them.”
The agent said that it is standard diplomatic and security protocol for the secretary of state to travel by armored limousine with the U.S. ambassador when visiting a foreign country.

“CLINTON refused to do so, instead choosing to be accompanied in the limousine by her Chief of Staff, HUMA ABEDIN. This frequently resulted in complaints by ambassadors who were insulted and embarrassed by this breach of protocol,” the summary says. Clinton’s breaches of protocol, it adds, were “well-known throughout Diplomatic Security and were ‘abundant.'”

>Police in the Czech Republic have detained an unidentified Russian man suspected of participating in cyberattacks on the United States, according to a statement published Wednesday on the police website.

>The statement said the Russian was arrested in cooperation with the FBI within 12 hours, thanks to a rapid exchange of information with American officials. The arrest took place on Oct. 5. It was not immediately clear why the Czech authorities waited so long to publicize it.

>U.S. law enforcement and justice sources told CBS News on Wednesday they were not aware of the arrest, raising questions about their purported involvement.

>Multiple CBS News sources in the U.S. said the arrest was not related to the hack of Democratic National Committee emails, which has become a major theme in the American presidential campaign ahead of the Nov. 8 election. One source said the arrest was related to an “old cyber case.”

>According to the statement from the Czech police, the country’s judiciary was considering extraditing the man to the U.S., but Justice Department officials in Washington said they were unaware of the arrest or any extradition request.

>The police said the man had been traveling with a woman in “a very expensive car” prior to his arrest, which they said came as a surprise to him.

A morbidly obese mother is shedding the pounds - after her 'kinky' younger lover gave her a new lease for life.

Patty Sanchez, 52, spent years piling on the weight with the encouragement of her feeder ex-boyfriend and weighed a whopping 714lbs (51st) at her heaviest.

But after splitting from her former flame, the mother-of-four, from Reno, Nevada, shed 266lbs (19st) - and began dating Bryan Johnson, 38, who she has an 'adventurous sex life' with.

Patty's new boyfriend is putting her through her paces with daily workouts - and plenty of exercise between the sheets.

Patty said: 'Bryan has changed my life. I've never felt love like this.

'He keeps me moving and active. Before I was too fat to do anything but now I have my zest for life back.'

At her largest, Patty wanted to be the fattest woman in the world.

She would scoff over 13,000 calories a day in greasy and sugary foods and kept her activity levels down to a bare minimum.

But now she weighs 448lbs (32st) and is continuing to lose weight.

Patty, who still relies on a mobility scooter, said: 'My ex would do everything for me.

'It got to the point where I was struggling to even walk to the bathroom and I realised that I was killing myself.

'My life needed to change.'

The relationship came to an end six years ago and without the constant pressure to gain weight, Patty relaxed her intensive eating regime.

She began to lose weight and decided to show off her smaller frame in some saucy snaps, which she posted to a Big Beautiful Woman dating website eight months ago.

Patty said: 'Bryan messaged me and he was very sweet and gentlemanly.

'We clicked right away. He likes bigger women and appreciates my curves, but he encourages healthy living and he keeps me moving.'

The couple moved in together after just a few months of exchanging their first message and just three months on, Patty has lost over 40lbs (2st 8lbs).

Patty said: 'Brian likes big women and we have a lot in common.

'I'm completely in love with this man. I've never felt love like this and I feel like Bryan has totally changed my life.'

Every day Bryan and Patty practice yoga and weightlifting for 30 minutes and the pair prepare healthy home-cooked meals together regularly.

And as well as working out together - the couple burn many calories in the bedroom.

Patty said: 'We have a very active and adventurous sex life - we can't keep our hands off each other.'

Bryan, a web consultant, added: 'There are limitations because of Patty's weight but we do what we can - I think that what we do get up to is probably too kinky to say.'

Despite Patty's shrinking figure, Bryan is insistent that his affections will not wane, and that he wants her to be healthier in the long run.

Bryan said: 'I'm not scared she's going to lose too much weight.

'Even though I have a preference for large women and that's always been a thing for me, the reason I'm with her is because I love who she is not what she is.'

Patty says that her children love Bryan and he has been gladly welcomed into the family.

She said: 'They are pleased to see me happy and living well and we have Bryan to thank for that.'

Now Patty is looking forward to a slimmer future with Bryan.

She said: 'I keep saying to everyone that Bryan is starving me but the truth is it's just all the exercise - he's really got me moving.

'I feel better than I have in years and it's amazing being with a man who really appreciates me.'
>>
The mom added: 'I spent so many years gaining weight to please other people but now I'm living my life for me.'

Now the couple are considering marriage and are looking forward to the future together.

Patty said: 'I want to carry on with what we're doing, losing more weight so I can be fully mobile.

'I want to get out and about so I can show him off - and I want to walk down the aisle.

'I don't want to get married in a wheelchair - I want to stand next to the man I love when he becomes my husband.

'Since I lost weight I've developed a new lease for life. If I hadn't I would never have met Bryan.

'I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with him.'

>YORK, Pa. — West York Council unanimously accepted embattled Mayor Charles Wasko's offer to resign to a round of applause from a crowd in council chambers on Monday night.

>Wasko came under fire for some of his Facebook posts, which were described as offensive and racist.

>One post depicts a wheelbarrow full of orangutans and says moving day at the White House "has finally arrived."

>Another references football player Colin Kaepernick, who has taken a knee during the national anthem in protest of how people of color are treated. The post on Wasko's page shows flag-draped coffins and asks the quarterback to point out which guys are black so the flag can be removed.

>After he was publicly criticized, Wasko wrote on his Facebook page that he will not be "politically correct, I will say what is on my mind and what I believe in ..." Wasko also told WHTM-TV that, "The racist stuff, yeah, I'll admit I did that, and I don't care what people label me as."

>Council members and some residents called for the mayor's resignation. The council voted earlier this month to censure the mayor.

>Council member Brian Wilson called the posts "unacceptable."

>He said he tried to talk to the mayor about removing them, and the mayor responded by blocking Wilson from seeing the page.

>In a subsequent motion Monday, the council voted 6-0 to appoint council president Shawn Mauck to become mayor when Wasko's resignation becomes effective Oct. 21. Mauck, who could not vote on the motion, will fill out the remainder of the term. The seat comes up for re-election next year.

President Obama said Tuesday that he wants private companies to help send humans to Mars by the 2030s.

Obama first said in 2010 he wanted to send astronauts “to orbit Mars and return them safely to Earth” by the mid-2030s with “a landing on Mars” to follow. In that speech at the Kennedy Space Center, Obama added that he expected to see such a landing in his lifetime.

In an opinion article Tuesday on CNN.com, Obama said private companies would be a key to the lofty goals.

“We have set a clear goal vital to the next chapter of America's story in space: sending humans to Mars by the 2030s and returning them safely to Earth, with the ultimate ambition to one day remain there for an extended time,” Obama said.

“Getting to Mars will require continued cooperation between government and private innovators, and we're already well on our way,” he said.

Obama noted that private companies will send astronauts to the international space station for the first time within the next two years and that NASA is working with “commercial partners to build new habitats that can sustain and transport astronauts on long-duration missions in deep space.”

“These missions will teach us how humans can live far from Earth -- something we'll need for the long journey to Mars,” Obama said.

There are more than 1,000 U.S. companies working on private space initiatives, he said.

>Nearly a year after two city marshals in Marksville, Louisiana fired on a car they'd been pursuing, killing an autistic 6-year-old boy inside and wounding his father, police body-cam footage of the shooting has been released.

>The shooting took place last November after police pursued Christopher Few following an argument he had with his girlfriend. Few's son Jeremy Mardis was sitting in the back of the car. The 14-minute video doesn't show the full pursuit; instead, it begins as a squad car pulls up and joins several others that have surrounded Few's seemingly stationary vehicle.

>Two deputy marshals, Derrick Stafford and Norris Greenhouse Jr., opened fire on Few's car. They later contended that Few had been driving recklessly and rammed their patrol car, putting their lives in danger. They also initially contended there was an outstanding warrant for Few, which investigators said wasn't true.

>In the video, which the head of the Louisiana State Police described as the "most disturbing thing" he had ever seen, officers call an ambulance and report the officer-involved shooting. As police approach the vehicle, Few can be seen bleeding and slumped over the side of the white vehicle.

>One officer shines his flashlight into the backseat and sees the child's body. "Fuck," the officer says loudly, and then whispers, "there's a kid."

>Few tries to get out of the car, then collapses to the ground, still bleeding. One officer reports the incident over the phone. "The officer didn't get shot, but some subjects did," he says.

>Stafford and Greenhouse were arrested and charged with second-degree murder and second-degree attempted murder. Both men were indicted in December and released on bond.

Given how much our middle eastern allies suck at fighting, it's possible the rebels still have a few operational anti-ship missiles that they just fire at targets of opportunity with what little time they have left before they have to abandon the launcher. >The Donald Trump campaign has brought on a controversial GOP operative with ties to the Koch brothers to run the campaign's "election protection" program, the Guardian reported.

>Mike Roman, Trump's new elections monitor, is perhaps best known for his involvement in the New Black Panther controversy in 2008, as his website first posted the video and he continued to ring the alarms bells that the group was engaging in voter intimidation, even as the Department of Justice was divided about the case. He also led an "intelligence agency" connected to the Koch brothers' Freedom Partners network, Politico reported in 2015, that sought to monitor the election-related activities of Democrat-supporting groups.

>Multiple sources confirmed with the Guardian that Roman was joining the campaign. His involvement comes as Trump has pushed the theory that the election is "rigged" against him, while urging his supporters to engage in vigilante monitoring at polling places.

>Roman, a GOP researcher, has a history of claiming that the left was engaged in inappropriate activities to influence elections. His website, the Election Journal, blared the 2008 video of two members of the New Black Panthers lingering outside of a Philadelphia polling place, one of them holding a night stick. It prompted allegations of voter intimidation that became a conservative cause célèbre. The George W. Bush administration's Department of Justice brought a civil case against the group that was ultimately dropped after President Obama took office -- prompting discord within the agency -- while Roman continued to publicize any New Black Panther political activity, often posting to Breitbart.

>The Politico report on the Koch brothers' intelligence group described Roman as a below-the-radar and even secretive figure.

There was a good opinion piece from a Republican lawyer recently that stated these vigilantes, being ignorant of the protections and policies of polling locations, will end up being kicked out or arrested and use that as evidence of something fishy going on when the reality is that they were violating the privacy of voters or viewed as potential tampering agents (either through intimidation or actually interfering with the process).

So basically yes, a bunch of these guys are going to get arrested for unintentionally doing what they wanted to guard against, and then claim that this is proof that the vote is being manipulated. It's basically the definition of irony.

>An expense report that shows Hillary giving money to the ‘Sharia Law Center’ should be too stupid to believe. But somehow it wasn’t. Meet the man who made it—and is baffled high-profile people fell for it.

>If you’re not paying attention, it looks like a smoking gun—a leaked expense report tying Hillary Clinton to media’s most powerful groups.

>The numbers from the supposedly leaked document—printed out and marked up with a highlighter, for good measure—are damning: $75,000 directly from the Clinton Foundation to polling firm Public Policy Polling. Over $333,000 sent, somehow, to the Black Panthers. Then the kicker: $30,000 to the “Sharia Law Center.”

>Of course, the whole thing is totally fake. The header for the page, called “Voter Suppression,” probably should’ve given it right away. But for Trump supporters on Twitter and Facebook, a Fox News contributor, and even radio hosts like Hal Turner, it is still very much real to them.

>Chris from Massachusetts (who declined to give his last name) got ‘em again. He’s spent all week trying to assuage anyone responding to his tweet with doubts about the paper’s veracity that it is the truest Wikileak of all.

>Since the release of Hillary Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta’s emails by WikiLeaks and Donald Trump’s lewd Access Hollywood conversation, Chris is one of many useful trolls creating intentional, immediately obvious disinformation—that will still dupe a too-large subset of devotees.

>Independent presidential candidate Evan McMullin, who is now polling above 20 percent in Utah, had to put out a statement on Saturday denying that he took $12,000 from the Clinton Foundation. Glenn Beck, who earned a cool $100 grand in this fictional land, even had to block out time in his podcast this weekend to mock it. Still, the web raged on.

>“Sharia Law? Glenn Beck? Bill Ayers? Black Lives Matter? ACORN? Public Polling?” asked Trump supporter @DebbGV on Twitter. “What exactly is this money being paid out for???”

>Chris, who goes by MassRafTer on Twitter, has been duping Trump supporters with intentionally impossible-to-believe fake leaked documents for a few months now.

>“The wonderful thing is this is the third time 55 dipshits per minute have fallen for my Photoshop and MSPaint work,” Chris told The Daily Beast.

>His most high-profile escapade was a fake internal memo by Public Policy Polling that showed the Clinton campaign reprimanding the survey company over how poor it is at collusion.

>“Your latest poll is unacceptable. We aren’t paying you $760,000 per month to show a FIVE POINT LEAD. Are you trying to make Trump win?” it reads. “We will be ending our contract with your company unless results improve quickly.”

>The stunt landed the fake memo on far-right message boards and merited a mocking two-minute segment on MSNBC’s All In With Chris Hayes. Even Donald Trump Jr. retweeted it—before later deleting it.

>Turns out Chris was a pioneer.

>“The first one was made to be as fake looking as possible just to see if people would buy it. Now 90 percent unbelievable would be a good number,” Chris said. “So I made the new one a greatest hits of Obama and Clinton conspiracies with stuff like Larry Sinclair to make it extra obvious.”

>Sinclair is, according to a fabricated right-wing conspiracy theory, Barack Obama’s gay lover and drug peddler from the ‘90s. Still, thousands of people—and counting—bought Chris’s fake posts.

>Take self-professed Trump supporter @OMFG_America, who went by @Anthony_VVeiner until Wednesday afternoon, and whose bio says his “hobbies include shitposting, tweeting fake news, and romantic walks on the beach.”

>Weeks ago, he posted what he alleged was Hillary Clinton’s vice presidential nominee Tim Kaine yelling at his 11-year-old daughter in a leaked voicemail. By Wednesday, when the post picked up steam, the “leak” had over 2,000 retweets.

>The audio, however, was Alec Baldwin’s infamous freakout from 2007, which made national news in April of that same year. Even Paul Joseph Watson of pro-Trump conspiracy website InfoWars, where articles regularly appear declaring 9/11 an inside job, took to Twitter to refute it.

>“Stop circulating that ‘Tim Kaine’ voicemail. It’s not him, it’s Alec Baldwin,” he wrote. “Why are some resorting to hoaxes when we have real WikiLeaks?”

>@OMFG_America later deleted the tweet, plus all of his tweets insisting it was real, and retweeted Watson. The user didn’t respond to requests for comment from The Daily Beast.

>Representatives of Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio contacted the Justice Department in July immediately after the government alleged some money embezzled from a Malaysian government fund financed his film “The Wolf of Wall Street,” his spokesman said Tuesday.

>The comments are the first from Mr. DiCaprio’s camp since the Justice Department filed civil forfeiture suits against luxury real estate, artwork and other assets purchased with allegedly stolen funds from 1Malaysia Development Bhd. by a cast of characters including Malaysian financier Jho Low, who was a friend of Mr. DiCaprio’s.

>They also come in the wake of protests from Switzerland’s Bruno Manser Fund, a rain-forest charity, which called earlier this month for Mr. DiCaprio to explain his ties to the alleged fraud or step down from his position as a United Nations “Messenger of Peace for Climate Change.”

He's making a Captain Planet remake movie and then a movie about a plantation owner. I wonder if it's PR damage control.

http://arstechnica.com/science/2016/10/intriguing-anomaly-found-inside-great-pyramid-at-giza/

>What they found was an ambiguous void behind a stone chevron structure on the north face of the pyramid. This chevron is not a decoration—indeed, it would have been hidden behind the outer surface of the pyramid when it was completed 4,500 years ago. Instead, chevrons are often used to maintain structural integrity in areas with ceilings. It appears likely that additional chevron structures below the remaining one have fallen off the pyramid over time. The fact that these chevrons appear over the putative empty space offers further evidence that the team may have found a hidden chamber.

>That said, many researchers are cautioning that we need to gather more evidence before we make plans to open the pyramid. For now, this is merely an anomaly, not a verified hidden chamber. Former Egyptian antiquities minister Zahi Hawass told Live Science that "the core [of the pyramid] has big and small stones, and this can show hollows everywhere." He and his team have asked for another year of funding for the imaging group, called the Scan Pyramids Mission, to gather more data.

>Scan Pyramids Mission previously used thermal imaging to look for anomalies in the Great Pyramid that might reveal the locations of hidden chambers. When the pyramid is heating up in the morning or cooling in the evening, solid areas exhibit a uniform temperature. But if there is an empty area beneath the surface, this can cause temperature fluctuations. The area identified by muography also showed heat anomalies, which is why the researchers brought in experts from Nagoya University in Japan to do muography.

>The researchers are still doing muography within the Great Pyramid. They will have more data to release in the first few months of 2017.

Opposing viewpoint:
>Chambers Hidden in Great Pyramid? Scientists Cast Doubt
http://www.livescience.com/56512-great-pyramid-chambers-may-not-exist.html
> A group of scientists has just claimed to have discovered two unknown voids or cavities within the Great Pyramid of Giza, the largest pyramid ever constructed in Egypt.

>Such cavities can be signs of hidden burials or rooms and as such, media outlets across the world immediately ran headlines touting this "discovery." One outlet even went so far as to proclaim that "secret rooms" had been found in the Great Pyramid.

>However, Live Science has learned that the results are more ambiguous. Scientists who are charged with overseeing the team's work, including Zahi Hawass, Egypt's antiquities minister, said they are not convinced that sizable voids or cavities have been discovered. [See Images of the Great Pyramid and the 'Voids']
...
>However, a team of scientists appointed by the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities to oversee the work of the Scan Pyramids Project team said it is not convinced that sizable voids or cavities have been discovered. This oversight team is led by former antiquities minister Zahi Hawass and includes several Egyptologists with decades of experience. Mark Lehner, who has been conducting work at Giza for about 30 years, is one of the team members.

>That group issued its own press release, through the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities, saying that more work needs to be done. The researchers recommended extending the Scan Pyramids project by another year so that more data can be gathered. They used the term "anomalies" in the press release rather than calling the findings "voids" or "cavities."

>Hawass told Live Science that the results obtained by the Scan Pyramid team may be the result of different-size stones used in the Great Pyramid and may not indicate the presence of sizable voids.

>Donald J. Trump’s son-in-law has discussed the possibility of a Trump-branded television network with a friend who has helped guide such deals.

>Jared Kushner, who is married to Mr. Trump’s older daughter, Ivanka, had conversations about the idea with Aryeh B. Bourkoff, the chief executive of LionTree, a boutique investment bank that has helped advise media deals.

>But such an effort, reported earlier on Monday by The Financial Times, would face enormous obstacles: Creating a television network would require a major cash investment, as well as a willingness by cable providers to carry the network. Without both, discussions of a television network would remain in the realm of fantasy.

>About a month ago, Mr. Kushner informally reached out to Mr. Bourkoff, a veteran media investment banker, about setting up a Trump television channel, according to a person briefed on the matter. But the conversation with Mr. Bourkoff was brief and has not progressed since, and the banker is unlikely to work on such a network, this person added. Mr. Kushner and Mr. Bourkoff are friends and speak frequently.

>A spokesman for LionTree declined to comment. Aides to Mr. Trump did not respond to an email seeking comment.

>The New York Times reported in August that Mr. Kushner had explored the possibility of either creating a media property or acquiring one, and his talks with Mr. Bourkoff were part of that effort, according to a person briefed on the discussions, who asked for anonymity to discuss private conversations.

>Within Mr. Trump’s campaign, top aides over the summer made reference to the possibility of running a media holding after the election, guided by the belief that the Republican nominee would win and such a property could help bolster his agenda, according to a person with direct knowledge of those discussions, who also asked for anonymity.

>At the moment, Mr. Trump’s campaign is led by Stephen K. Bannon, who operates the hard-right website Breitbart. Mr. Trump’s campaign digital director, Brad Parscale, is close with Mr. Kushner and has done work for the Trump Organization in the past.

>People close to the Trump campaign have noted the emphasis that Mr. Kushner has placed on digital advertising, as Mr. Parscale has amassed data that has limited applicable use in a political race.

>But Mr. Trump himself is said to have expressed limited enthusiasm for the idea of “Trump TV.”

>In an interview with the Washington Post in September, Mr. Trump denied that he was interested in pursuing a media property of his own.

>Mr. Trump, who historically gets investors for his major projects, seems unlikely to put in large amounts of his own cash into a potentially risky venture.

>The father-daughter investors Rebekah and Robert Mercer, who are said to have funded Breitbart operations and who are now supporting Mr. Trump, also do not appear to have the money to finance such an operation on their own.

>What’s more, major cable providers like Charter, Time Warner Cable and Comcast might be reluctant to give Mr. Trump visibility by putting a Trump channel in their lineup.

>When Rupert Murdoch created Fox News two decades ago, he faced hurdles in getting a channel from Time Warner Cable. Rudolph W. Giuliani, then the mayor of New York, helped broker a deal by which Fox would be aired broadly. Mr. Giuliani is now an adviser to Mr. Trump.

>Starting a TV network is no easy feat, as Oprah Winfrey, the popular daytime host turned media mogul, learned.
