“It’s good to think about this country’s complicated history right now,” artist Nina Katchadourian told Hyperallergic, just a few minutes before she placed the 2016 addition to her “Monument to the Unelected” installation on the lawn of the Lefferts Historic House in Prospect Park. It’s the project’s 59th sign created for the runner-up to every American presidential campaign.

The structure itself, an 18th-century Dutch farmhouse, is a reminder of the long, complex societal history of New York City, especially as two candidates with deep connections in the area conclude their turbulent campaign. Today’s dreary weather and small, quiet group of reporters contributed to a somber mood as Katchadourian placed a sign emblazoned with “I’m with Hillary 2016” on the rebar poles in the ground.

As Hrag Vartanian reported earlier this week for Hyperallergic, she started the project in 2008, including the runners-up from that election (McCain/Palin), and revisited it in 2012 (Romney/Ryan). “I’m really committed to showing this four years from now, no matter what,” she added, although noted that this year it was “more timely than ever.” The ultimate goal of the project, which she describes as “politically neutral,” is to “think about what we’ve done, and think about it again.”

Indeed, it’s tempting to imagine a different reality when instead of the Clinton sign is one for Trump. Each of the signs represents another path for the country, whether an Al Gore victory in 2000, or Aaron Burr in 1800. “Monument to the Unelected” will stay on view this weekend, where pedestrians walking down Flatbush Avenue, spying the work through the fence, or visitors within Prospect Park, can witness this visual narrative of American alternate histories.

Two local residents accidentally stumbled across the burial site, close to the village of Kokorya, which contains the bones of an adult man, his birch bark quiver, arrow shafts and iron arrow heads, intricate ornaments and utensils made from the roots of trees, as well as the remnants of silk ribbons.

He is believed to be a warrior with a talent for archery who lived around the 13th to 15th century like the legendary outlaw Robin Hood in England.

The archer is likely to have been held in respect, confirmed by the location of his burial and the care taken to send him into the next life with his arrows and 'sophisticated' quiver. It has pockets for different types of arrows, say scientists.

Archeologists have not yet secured permission to open the wooden sarcophagus, although locals who found and looked inside confirm it contains bones, and it may also have the marksman's bow.

Dr Nikita Konstantinov, Head of the Museum of Gorno-Altaisk State University, said: 'At the moment we have a birch bark quiver, two bone plates with elaborated ornaments, iron arrowheads, wooden arrow shafts, birch bark linings for a saddle, the remains of ribbons, likely silk, and what is left of a leather strap.

'Initially we thought that the bone plates were details of the bow, but they turned to be the decorations of the quiver.'

The warrior is suspected to be of Mongolian origin - 'there are no similar quivers found in our region, this is unique for Altai.' It was wrapped in silk ribbons when he was buried.

'The leather strap was used for attaching the quiver to the belt, we believe. Judging by the shape of the arrow heads, I would say that the owner was a warrior.' But they could also be used for hunting.

Vasily Oinoshev, director of the Agency for Cultural and Historical Heritage of the Altai Republic, said: 'The quiver is a very interesting one.

It has separate 'pockets' for different types of arrows.

'This quiver is a great find, it is very well preserved. It will be important to examine it more thoroughly to understand its construction.'

Archeologists hope to get permission to open and examine the sarcophagus next summer, and in the meantime have taken steps to preserve the burial site. They hope to find the archer's bow and his saddle.

'Sadly we cannot go and excavate the grave immediately. We need to have a special permission for work,' said Dr Oinoshev. 'Excavations are allowed in the period from 1 April 1 to 1 November. So as soon as we get all the permits we will go to work on this grave.

'We are doing all we can to ensure the safety of the grave in winter and to ensure the security of other archaeological objects. I have many questions to how these items were found.

'The story was that the locals found the grave in a hole in a cliff and took some items from there. But I am not completely sure they have not unearthed it. We need to check all this thoroughly.'

Altai is a region where Mongolians sent their first external conquest in the 12th century. The area remained under Mongol sway until the 14th and 15th centuries.

According to Dr Alexey Tishkin, an Altai researcher: 'When the Mongolian tribes came to Altai, previous Turk traditions were forgotten. Part of the local population was assimilated or destroyed.'

Finds from this Mongolian conquest are fairly rare in Altai. The wooden sarcophagus and cold dry climate helped the excellent preservation of the finds.

The story of Robin Hood was popular in the Soviet Union because his robbing of the rich to give to the poor to an extent coincided with Communist ideology. A movie, The Arrows of Robin Hood, was made in 1975 by Soviet director Sergei Tarasov.

>During a radio talk show on Thursday, Nigel Farage, Britain's most outspoken cheerleader for President-elect Donald Trump, claimed credit as the “catalyst” for the Republican nominee's electoral success and cracked a joke about Trump molesting conservative British Prime Minister Theresa May.

>“I'm now going to become a diplomat. Come and schmooze Theresa — don’t touch her, for goodness sake,” Farage said on TalkRadio, a popular program, offering a bit of the proverbial British banter.

>“If he does, only in affectionate way,” quipped one of the show's hosts.

>To which Farage responded, “I could be there as the responsible adult to make sure everything is okay.”

>Sources from Downing Street have told the media that the prime minister and the president-elect have spoken and plan to meet before his inauguration. May, who came to power in the wake of Britain's tumultuous vote to quit the European Union, is now navigating the country's “Brexit” — a cause Farage and his far-right United Kingdom Independence Party have championed for years.

South Korean President Park Geun-hye’s approval rating is at 5%, which is lower than any previous president. On Nov. 4, polling firm Gallup Korea announced the results of its regular public opinion poll of 1,005 adult men and women from around the country that were surveyed between Nov. 1 and 3 (with a margin of error of ±3.1% and a reliability of 95%). Only 5% of all respondents thought that Park is doing a good job as president.

While a 5% approval rating is shocking enough, what is even more shocking is Park’s rating in the Honam region (Gwangju and Jeolla Province) in the southeast: 0%. Divided by region, Park received a positive job rating from 2% of respondents in Seoul, 4% in Incheon, 3% in Daejeon, Sejong and Chungcheong, 9% in Busan, Ulsan and South Gyeongsang Province and 10% in Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province. This means that Park’s approval rating was below average everywhere except the Yeongnam region in the southeast. Even so, 0% is astounding.
Responding to the shocking outcome of an approval rating of 0%, internet users in South Korea offered various theories, such as that there were no respondents in the region or that a small percentage was rounded down to 0%. One user argued that Gallup Korea was trying to stir up regional sentiment by emphasizing that Park had an approval rating of 0% in Honam.

By age group, Park scored a positive approval rating with 1% of people in their 20s, 1% of people in their 30s, 3% of people in their 40s, 3% of people in their 50s and 13% of people in their 60s.

Democrats, Trump, and the Ongoing, Dangerous Refusal to Learn the Lesson of Brexit

THE PARALLELS BETWEEN the U.K.’s shocking approval of the Brexit referendum in June and the U.S.’ even more shocking election of Donald Trump as president last night are overwhelming. Elites (outside of populist right-wing circles)aggressively unified across ideological lines in opposition to both. Supporters of Brexit and Trumpwere continually malignedby the dominant media narrative (validly or otherwise) as primitive, stupid, racist, xenophobic, and irrational. In each case, journalists who spend all day chatting withone another on Twitter and congregating in exclusive social circles in national capitals — constantly re-affirming their own wisdom in an endless feedback loop — were certain of victory. Afterward, the elites whose entitlement to prevail was crusheddevoted their energies to blaming everyone they could find except forthemselves, while doubling downon their unbridled contempt for those who defied them, steadfastly refusing to examine what drove theirinsubordination.

The indisputable fact is that prevailing institutions of authority in the West, for decades, have relentlessly and with complete indifference stomped on the economic welfare and social security of hundredsof millions of people. While elite circles gorged themselves on globalism, free trade, Wall Street casino gambling, and endless wars (wars that enriched theperpetrators and sent the poorest and most marginalized tobear all their burdens), they completely ignored the victims of their gluttony, except when those victims piped up a bit too much — when they caused a ruckus — andwere then scornfullycondemned as troglodytes who were the deserved losers in the glorious, global game of meritocracy.
>>
>>84559

That message was heard loud and clear. The institutions and elite factions that have spent years mocking, maligning, and pillaging large portions of the population —all while compiling their ownlong record of failure and corruption and destruction —are now shocked that their dictatesand decrees go unheeded. But human beings are not going to follow and obey the exact people they most blame for their suffering. They’re going to do exactly the opposite: purposely defy them and try to impose punishmentin retaliation. Theirinstruments for retaliation are Brexit and Trump. Those are their agents, dispatchedon a mission of destruction: aimed ata system and culture they regard —not without reason —as rife with corruption and, above all else, contempt for them and their welfare.

I am thinking, instead of a catastrophic presidency for everyone, maybe we can have just a regular presidency if we at least

Trump is not a run-of-the-mill Republican and we can remind him of that. The left can present itself as a force to support trump in policy disputes with a republican house and senate. And maybe we can gain leverage in this way.

His appointment of the EPA transition team to a ACC skeptic from a think tank funded by big oil might have just been a reward to the base that got him elected, it might not necessarily be indicative of his future policy commitments.

He's made gestures, cheap as they may be toward mending his relationship with democrats and liberals.

I don't know if he will be receptive, but it's worth a shot. We can test the waters and see how he responds. Maybe he won't really withdraw from the Paris Accord for tackling ACC, for example.
We shouldn't underestimate him, but he's shown himself quite impulsive and perhaps not the sharpest president elect we've had. We could manipulate him. If we malign him immediately, we may loose an opportunity.

>Rise of the undesirables
>During the decade-long debate over same-sex marriage, I often argued with other journalists about our openly slanted coverage of the issue, which amounted to cheerleading for the pro-gay side. Don't we have a professional obligation to tell the other side of the story? I would ask. Well, came the reply, do you think the media had an obligation to be fair to the Ku Klux Klan during the Civil Rights struggle?
>It was just that simple for so many journalists. We pride ourselves on being realists, but in fact we have a fatal weakness for construing the world as crude morality plays. This left many of us in no position to understand why people might resent the Obama administration ordering public schools to open up locker rooms of the opposite sex to transgender students, or why white people might see the Black Lives Matter movement as a racist and illiberal response to the problem of police brutality.

>The people who run newsrooms agonise over diversity. They will go to any length to increase racial, gender, and sexual diversity, but care nothing about viewpoint diversity. In one newsroom where I worked the only religious conservatives besides me were the African-American secretaries. Nobody there thought this was a problem. To the contrary, they believed that religious conservatives, among other undesirable demographic categories, were the problem.
>But yesterday, these undesirables, Trump's forgotten people, proved to be a majority of the electorate. If they believe that news coverage is - what's the word? - rigged against people like them, well, they're more right than wrong.

This doesn't forgive the BBC, more than it continues to implicate mass media as a source of propaganda and brainwashing. What does /news/ think? Is journalistic integrity still a thing? Or should journalists skew viewpoints for the "greater good"?

I don't feel like your subject is accurate. This is an editorial written by an American who doesn't even work for the BBC.

I'm definitely tired of reading news articles which openly display left-wing bias- despite my political views falling by and large to the left both socially and fiscally.
>>
The BBC is the news company that constantly gets criticised for being too left wing by right wingers, and too right wing by left wingers. It's the news company that put the leader of the British National Party (pretty much our farthest right wing party that's still legal) in a TV debate, against opposition across the whole political spectrum.

If you're out to criticise the MSM for lack of balance, the BBC would be the wrong place to start tbh.
