Is there a more attractive writer?
Looks like he's taken a few in the fanny. Removed from my backlog.
Thanks, OP.

Me honestly. I may not be famous but I blow that faggot out the water in the looks department
Has anyone actually learned a language just to read books that are in that language? Is it worth it? Does it improve your native language writing skills?
sometimes jokes work better in the native language. Sometimes it doesn't matter.

i learned english just to shitpost here.

I'm learning French primarily to read Proust. I'll let you know if it's worth it once I progress a little more.
Alright you faggots, I'm starting Infinite Jest. Is it suggested to get one of those reader's guides too? They seemed unnecessary and kind of pricy.
I don't think a reader's guide is worth it. Realistically its a fairly simple book. Just requires multiple reads.
Totally unnecessary, like yeah there's a few cool Borges references here or there but it's not complicated prose (for the most part, certain segments on math or in vernacular can be a little tough but nothing that would ruin a first-read through). Guides pretty much just feed you trivial information which is only cool to know if it becomes your favorite book or something.
It's the most clearly written book you'll ever read besides The Stranger. You just have to get past the early-ish ebonics chapters. It's just long. There are no tricks to it.

/lit/ i'm having an existential crisis. Everything I wanna do I suck at, and everything i'm good at, its worthless. Should I really study for an English degree? All my friends support me on it because they think i'm some genius but they don't even no the first thing about literature. My family always keep telling me to do something useful but i'm just so jaded with my life and who I am and what the whole point of anything is right now. I've thought about taking a semester off but i'll be wasting my financial aid if I do and I'm really not in the place to do that right now. Any advice /lit/? I've thought about learning another language and get a degree in that but i'm still so lost, I don't even know if I have the knack for another language.
>Should I really study for an English degree?
Not if you want your life to go anywhere. What are you good at?

I got about half way through before dismissing it as unrepentant edgelordism.
What is /lit/'s opinion on this book? I'm probably about to read it all the way through.
A little background about myself. I was born and raised a southern Baptist and up until when I was about 15 I was a very very strict Christian. Not the mean type but the "nice guy" Christian. Around when I was 15 I started to question my own beliefs. I soon came to the conclusion that I was an agnostic thiest. I floated through life until now where I want to find a purpose. So here I am going to read it for myself as an adult instead of a child to judge it myself. I really like Catholicism minus the corruption.
My question is... What is the best translation and also would you post your religion/denomination?
I also plan to read the Quran soon after.
Thanks for reading and the responses.
Also am I wrong to kinda not trust modern translations and even the king James version? I feel like there could be outside forces that wanted to translate them how they wanted.

For the Qur'an, Sayyid Hossein Nasr recently released a Study Qur'an that's supposedly very good and will be used as a standard by Western academics. Basically intro stuff from what I've read about it. No Arabic is within it but it's better to listen to the Arabic than attempt to read it or its transliteration if you don't know Arabic.

Thanks. Anyone recommend any other religious books that I should read also?
The Book Of Mormon?
Hey fellow Aussie /lit/fags. I'm going to transfer into Secondary Teaching, Majoring in Arts. Any of you out there in this line of work? I know it's not the most glamorous, but Australian teachers are some of the highest paid teachers in the world. Plus I love Literature, so being able to focus on that, but teaching at a high school level (ain't rocket science) would be good for me.
Also, the ability to travel overseas to South East Asian countries teaching English, or any other foreign country for that matter, greatly attracts me to the degree.
>Don't wanna do it my whole life anyway, just gunna write a post-modern epic on the side and live off all the pussy and fame when the time comes.
So, opinions? Aussie teacher opinions wanted. Or wherever the fuck you're from.
kek
>life decisions

I've also given it some thought purely for the economic security aspect of teaching. From what I understand you get in, join the union and from then on so long as you don't hit or molest a kid you've got a reasonably well paid job for the rest of your life.
I've been poor and it sucks arse, being a teacher might not be so bad.
before you become a secondary school teacher, listen to every song This Is Serious Mum ever wrote. most of the guys in that band were secondary school teachers, and their hatred for teenagers drips from every note.
>Australian teachers are some of the highest paid teachers in the world
that's like saying "Australian homeless are some of the highest paid homeless in the world"

Has anybody here successfully taught themselves a second language?
Trying to learn French ATM. My resources are the internet, Rosetta Stone, a a native French speaker I've made friends with at university.
I've heard that immersion is the best way to learn. I'm trying to quiz myself at vocabulary, waiting for my skills to level up a bit until i start worrying about grammar.
So, anybody who's been in the same boat as me and came out on top, what are some learning paths you found useful? It doesn't have to be French.
I'm thinking about setting clever bot to French and trying to immerse myself that way? Is that a good idea?
I worked on learning German for a few months this summer. Got a lot of the grammar fundamentals down bc of 1337 teacher but my vocab is weak. I decided I didn't want to do German philosophy for a PhD so I gave up, but I could feel my grasp of the language coming. Probably if you spend a whole year going hardcore for a couple hours a day you will be conversational. But if you don't stick with it it fades, so I am wondering what is the point, other than 'looking good' on applications
Ehh i taught myself american sign language back when i was 13 and 14. my friend knew some so we had some convos in it. Eventually stopped using it and i literally forgot EVERYTHING. i cant even remember the alphabet. So i think you really need to study it a lot and use it as much as you can. Anyhow i'm trying to learn Russian now. Its a lot harder since its a whole knew alphabet. You can try duolingo if you haven't heard about it already

Do you think any non-human animals should be awarded personhood status?
dat sum peter singer?
No.
Damn that was easy. Pitch me another one OP.
>>7397844
Well, Peter Singer does believe some animals are persons, most notable chimps, I believe.
Casual reader here but i've been wanting to start writing my own short stories for leisure. I have an idea for a good memoir like story done in fiction but before starting and finishing something that will turn out a mess I was wondering if /lit/ had any sort of guide or book maybe they could recommend. Thanks
Start with the Greeks

This went right over my head friend.
I don't know what else really I could or am asking with this thread but okay.
Read tons of short stories. It's actually a great type of writing to be interested in because you can practice it much more easily than you can with novels.
Suggestions:
>Lorrie Moore - Like Life
>Tao Lin - Bed: Stories
>Tolstoy - Death of Ivan Ilych and other stories
>DFW - Oblivion

What are the best translations of Dostoevsky's work in terms of their accuracy to the original Russian text?
>>7397590
McDuff or Avsey.
>>7397590
>translations
>>7397590
P&V is my go-to. As a Russian, you can usually make out what Dostoevsky wrote, although perfect translations are impossible.
Even the title Dream of a Ridiculous Man cannot be translated well because literally it would be "funny man". If you want true Dostoevksy, you gotta learn Russian.
