Bretty gud deal.
So far I'm mostly hoping for some deals on some films I enjoy, because my parents hinted they were getting me a Blu-Ray player for Christmas. Criterion sales don't seem to be that much, and the 50th anniversary collection is tos expensive for me to justify. T_T

And I forgot chart post.

I'm attending a talk and live Q&A with Peter Hitchens tonight about the legalisation of drugs.

Can anyone sum up his book on the topic?

I think I understand the crux of his argument, which is that addiction doesn't really exist. Also does anyone have any good question ideas?

>>

I think the point that he makes (or maybe I'm confusing my friend's arguments for his) is that you always have access to willpower, there is never anything "physically" stopping you from doing drugs. I have a feeling that his idea of the unstoppable will is connected to his belief in god, where an ultimate power of will would make sense if a soul existed.

How did Franzen become so notorious among millennial American readers? His books are mostly inoffensive, in fact that's what more discerning critics tend to charge him with, but reading some of the stuff about him in the new literary media you'd think he was a raging misogynist.

On a related note, what does it say about American literary culture when thoughtful criticism is so often replaced with blunt moralizing? Readers seem only to want wholly sanitized work. Like they think reading is somehow morally beneficial, as if it will make you a good person or change the world or some shit, and so they demand writing has pure and noble aspirations. Even the absolutely minor transgressions of Franzen are somehow too much to allow.

I think it's just boredom.

Bored people pick the stupidest fights/crusades about the most asinine things. When there's not much going on in your own little sphere, "minor transgressions" are big deals.

What are some non-fiction books that can teach me the art of manipulation?

I want to be the master puppeteer who uses psychology to get people to give me whatever I want.
13 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
I can give you some books that show you that that's not how the world works and that If there was a successful book for that you would know about it already. And if you read a psychology book you will realize you're the manipulated one here.

Become a better person who is comfortable with not being in control and, whamo, you're suddenly not a fucklord who thinks psychological manipulation is a thing and suddenly has the whole world in front of him to enact his will on through legitimate routes.

Go read everything that isn't what you're looking for and you'll realize the subterranean neurosis of common life already holds everybody in its grip in some way, and all you can do is try to become a better interpreter of whats IS deep down inside people by being a better person and understanding yourself. There's no mastercode to the human mind, because why would we make books about all the lovely and crazy people out there and the many multifaceted meanings of situations?

At the base level all I'm trying to get across is that if you think this is actually a thing then it will be painfully obvious to everybody that you, in some way, are disingenuous and trying to manipulate them. People are perceptive, and not the masse of sheep you probably think they are.

Treat people like humans, anon, and all of this will probably be better than ever reading some bullshit PUA oriented book on "how to manipulate friends and become a self serving black hole who actually has no friends because everybody knows what he's trying to do."

Also, I might just also be writing what I would like to write to a guy in the Philosophy Club I am president of that thinks he subtly manipulates everybody. But everybody knows he thinks that and are very uncomfortable around him because he wears baggy jeans and weird denim vests with messenger caps and says he likes his hood because it makes him look like he's from Assassain's Creed: the best game he's played.

Probably just like you.

Anyone know of any good (and largely successful) novels/unified books comprised of several interrelated or intertextual pieces? I really enjoyed Faulkner's TSatF, and I believe he reached a new level of formal and structural brilliance with Go Down, Moses.

Anyone have any recommendations?

>>
>>7405787
I should probably clarify: I want to read more novels/books made up of several long-form pieces which, while relating to and complementing each other, can be considered individual, accomplished and (to a certain extent) self-sufficient works. I'm thinking ideally of a work made up of a group of novellas, as opposed to a novel broken into several parts or chapters, which seems more conventional.
>>
Instead of answering your question I'll ask another. I didn't see the connection between the fragments of Moses. Care to explain?

The things they carried by Tim O'Brien.
Sketches of a Sportsman by Turgeniev. (This was one of Hemingway's favorite books, pretty cool stuff. The book show the life of russian peasantry in the 19th century, and it was banned in Russia because it was seen as promoting social revolution.)

I don't think there is any reason to read it in german instead of english unless german is the language you are more fluent in. Just make sure you get a decent translation.
