Hey /lit/. Spanish-fag here (from Spain).
I'd like to share with you this wonderful poem called "La Canción del Pirata" or "Pirate's Song". Everytime that I read it I start feeling.

>>
>SPANISH (1/2):

Con diez cañones por banda,
viento en popa, a toda vela,
no corta el mar, sino vuela,
un velero bergantín.
Bajel pirata que llaman,
por su bravura, El Temido,
en todo mar conocido,
del uno al otro confín.

La luna en el mar riela,
en la lona gime el viento,
y alza en blando movimiento
olas de plata y azul;
y ve el capitán pirata,
cantando alegre en la popa,
Asia a un lado, al otro Europa,
y allá a su frente Estambul:

«Navega, velero mío,
sin temor,
que ni enemigo navío
ni tormenta, ni bonanza
tu rumbo a torcer alcanza,
ni a sujetar tu valor.

Veinte presas
hemos hecho
a despecho
del inglés,
y han rendido
sus pendones
cien naciones
a mis pies.»

Que es mi barco mi tesoro,
que es mi dios la libertad,
mi ley, la fuerza y el viento,
mi única patria, la mar.

«Allá muevan feroz guerra,
ciegos reyes
por un palmo más de tierra;
que yo aquí tengo por mío
cuanto abarca el mar bravío,
a quien nadie impuso leyes.

Y no hay playa,
sea cualquiera,
ni bandera
de esplendor,
que no sienta
mi derecho
y dé pecho
a mi valor.»

Que es mi barco mi tesoro,
que es mi dios la libertad,
mi ley, la fuerza y el viento,
mi única patria, la mar.
>>
>SPANISH (2/2):

A la voz de «¡barco viene!»
es de ver
como vira y se previene,
a todo trapo a escapar;
que yo soy el rey del mar,
y mi furia es de temer.

En las presas
yo divido
lo cogido
por igual;
sólo quiero
por riqueza
la belleza
sin rival.

Que es mi barco mi tesoro,
que es mi dios la libertad,
mi ley, la fuerza y el viento,
mi única patria, la mar.

¡Sentenciado estoy a muerte!
Yo me río;
no me abandone la suerte,
y al mismo que me condena,
colgaré de alguna entena,
quizá en su propio navío.

Y si caigo,
¿qué es la vida?
Por perdida
ya la di,
cuando el yugo
del esclavo,
como un bravo,
sacudí.

Que es mi barco mi tesoro,
que es mi dios la libertad,
mi ley, la fuerza y el viento,
mi única patria, la mar.

Son mi música mejor
aquilones,
el estrépito y temblor
de los cables sacudidos,
del negro mar los bramidos
y el rugir de mis cañones.

Y del trueno
al son violento,
y del viento
al rebramar,
yo me duermo
sosegado,
arrullado
por la mar.

Que es mi barco mi tesoro,
que es mi dios la libertad,
mi ley, la fuerza y el viento,
mi única patria, la mar.

>ENGLISH (1/2):

The breeze fair aft, all sails on high,
Ten guns on each side mounted seen,
She does not cut the sea, but fly,
A swiftly sailing brigantine;
A pirate bark, the "Dreaded" name,
For her surpassing boldness famed,
On every sea well-known and shore,
From side to side their boundaries o'er.

The moon in streaks the waves illumes
Hoarse groans the wind the rigging through;
In gentle motion raised assumes
The sea a silvery shade with blue;
Whilst singing gaily on the poop
The pirate Captain, in a group,
Sees Europe here, there Asia lies,
And Stamboul in the front arise.

"Sail on, my swift one! nothing fear;
Nor calm, nor storm, nor foeman's force,
Shall make thee yield in thy career
Or turn thee from thy course.

Despite the English cruisers fleet
We have full twenty prizes made;
And see their flags beneath my feet
A hundred nations laid.

My treasure is my gallant bark,
My only God is liberty;
My law is might, the wind my mark,
My country is the sea.

"There blindly kings fierce wars maintain,
For palms of land, when here I hold
As mine, whose power no laws restrain,
Whate'er the seas infold.

Nor is there shore around whate'er,
Or banner proud, but of my might
Is taught the valorous proofs to bear,
And made to feel my right.

My treasure is my gallant bark,
My only God is liberty;
My law is might, the wind my mark,
My country is the sea.

Hello /lit/, I've been trying to study up on philosophy, and have been reading this Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy on Personal Identity (http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/identity-personal/) and have found myself totally lost. What the fuck "The Ontology of Temporal Parts"? Most of the article seems like total jargon and nonsense without a single helpful or even any conclusion, it just ends on: You "could" be a fourth dimensional superbeing amalgamating various paradoxical transient states (?). Also, brute-physicality seems like reductionist nonsense designed to avoid the trickier insinuations of Locke's mental criterion. Furthermore, can someone explain the "Too-Many-Thinkers" problem? I understand why psych-con eliminates brute-physicality as having anything to do with personal identity given the brain vat thought experiment, but why would we then assume there's a separate human organism as well as your own identity, and that creates the risk of fission?

By God /lit/, I'm so fucking confused. Is this just a bunk article/subject. What philosophers will clear my head? I liked Nietzche's views that "being is becoming" - seems to avoid a lot of the thornier issues, especially if you taking the tumblr view that personal identity is anything I fucking say it is, because it's my own label. Thoughts on personal identity? It seems like an under-discussed subject here.

>>7397390
Would you have any justifications behind that? I'm of mind to agree, but just so exhausted from wasting my time on a retarded pseduo-philosophical article that I really can't verbalize it.

Any good Budhist literature on the subject?

Not sure if this is the correct place where to ask, but I know it's here where all the intellectual anons are.

Do you know what is the accent that classical actors like Ian McKellen and Charles Dance use? Is it just Upper Received Pronunciation? Is there something exclusive that only old theatre actors learned?

Examples:

It is standard recieved pronounciation, if such a thing can be described. Upper class accents (e.g. Jacob Rees-Mogg) tend towards longer vowels and even less Rs. Being RADA actors these two tend to enunciate all their letters, but without some of the pregnancy that RP can have.

What is THE definitive version of Shakespeare's complete works?

and what are the definitive commentaries on him?

I picked up an old copy when I first started going to /lit/ from my local charity shop but the paper is incredibly thin and the text is tiny. Likewise I have Kermode's Shakespeare, Spenser, Donne but I've yet to read Spenser and would like to read more Shakespeare before I read it.

I have the nelson doubleday 2 volume set, it's complete and has minimal to no commentary, just the texts themselves. I use Folger library paperbacks for annotation.

reading a lot of (good) books. p much the only way.
>>
>>7396349
yeah, but reading books won't teach you the rules that will allow a deeper understanding.
>>
>>7396355
yes, it will. there's no 'rules'. if you want to understand characterization, or mood, or style, you have to feel it out of the works of other people. there's no textbook for it, you have to understand it by yourself.

unless i misunderstood and you don't want to write prose or poetry, in which case you should read the chicago manual of style.

hello /lit/ first time browsing and posting.
backgroud: never went to college, slacked in HS but graduated. really manned up n take care of business now
i wanted to start reading more, i feel like itd benefit my life, r. i bought moby dick like 2 years ago to start this change, but i found it a bit difficult to read (did not understand his metaphors and some idioms), which basically through me off the horse by chapter 4, along with not being captivated throughout some of the chapter.
so my question is, is there a way i can assess my reading level, and is this book just slow?
do i just need to pull myself up by the boot straps n dive in?
As a current non reader, any author references would be appreciated.
