On earth we have intimate moments (say during sunset), and feelings of 'detachment??' (say when looking up at the night sky)

What are some good books about WWII? I'm interested in the subject. Stuff about the Axis powers is particularly interesting.

this is a good question, all i can think of that i've read that was remotely relevant to ww2 was catch-22, but i doubt that's what you want. i wouldnt mind reading literature about ww2, but you know, thinking about it, that was a period in which literature lost a lot of meaning, not much after the 1950s is worth reading. that's just my opinion, but it's hard not to notice the significant dip in skill after that war. it was as if the innocence of art was no more and humanity suddenly became adult, sarcastic, cynical, and crude.

Currently reading, pic related.

I also enjoyed "Enemy at the Gates". It is mostly about 6th armies struggle against the ruskies.

>be german, laying in a bunker with two bullets in leg
>surrounded by dead and dying germans left for the russians.
>feel something wet on shoulder
>look up to see a small hole above, with fuel being poured inside
>hear ivan asking for a lite
>collapse to the ground and crawl to the exit
>fireball behind you explodes, comrades burned alive
>make it out
>Feel iron barrel on the back of the head
>realize its a soviet soldier, with a pistol to your scalp
>hear another russian ask your would-be-killer
"what would comrade stalin do?"
>ruskie clicks pistol's safety back, leaving you alone on the street
>go on to survive a few years in a gulag and make it back to germany.

For a complete philosophy noob, what are the best companion (either a book or online resource) to Plato's Complete Works? I just checked this out from the library, but I want to be able to get as much out of it as possible. Is it not necessary or do any of you guys have any recommendations? Thanks in advance.

I'd like to know this too. I usually use the Wikipedia articles and SparkNotes for each dialogue just to make sure I didn't lose the Big Important Idea in a given dialogue, and I used to have this great .pdf a /lit/ user posted way back that gave historical context for each dialogue. Some great stuff in there, like how in the early dialogues, these aren't just random Athenians or random topics, they are eminent members of The Thirty Tyrants who met messy ends, either related to the dialogue's topic or to the interlocutor's failure to really grasp the point of a certain virtue. There is some eerie foreshadowing in there.

What is the official /lit/selected, best work by Shakespeare? I remember reading some time ago about his highly praised around here (considered his best) work, not being Romeo & Juliet, Hamlet, nor Macbeth and can't remember the title. I've read the three memeic aforementioned plays and loved them, but who cares cuz we all do I guess. You can just throw the title I'm looking for and we'll get rid of this horrible thread as fast as we can.

Who else takes the radical philosophical view that literature is an arm of the entertainment industry? And that the writer has a responsibility to give me FUN?

I've read too much self indulgent shit. No more lads. No more. And no, this doesn't mean reading sci fi or fantasy shit. I am entertained by a lot of respected books.

Picrelated isn't that entertaining but is passable.

Today anyone anytime can write something. Being an author, a writer, never been so easy like today, so it is more than common to be in contact with a lot of contemporary trash.

So I've only read a couple of his poems long ago but I wish to read more of his body of work. I tried checking the wiki for any starting image but unfortunately came out empty-handed.

So, what works would you recommend reading first and what should I keep in mind while reading them. I am looking more in the range of poetry but am open to his essays or anything of that sort too.

Also, what makes you interested in Walt Whitman anyway?

Hey /lit/, I don't know if this has been covered a million times here or not but why don't the eagles just airdrop the ring into Mount Doom from the very beginning? Thousands of innocents saved, endless hardship on the part of the Fellowship and others avoided.

Instead they pop in when Gandalf needs to get bailed out, then again when Frodo's finally killed the ring and HE needs to get bailed out.

If I recall the eagles weren't that invested in the war and only liked Gandalf enough to help him out a bit but not to fly into a volcano guarded by the most powerful being in the universe carrying the most powerful object in the universe. makes sense to me.

Sup /lit/ looking for experimental narratives and structure. It can be ancient text or graphic novel or anything in between. Bonus points for mind fuckery.

Read some surrealism if you want to go in hard. Like Aragon or Breton. Paris Peasant is one I've got lined up, I've taken a peek and it looks like banter madness.

Conrad's The Nigger of the 'Narcissus' blends first and third person narrative.

Didn't aragon do the poetry about a girls cunt (literally?) I like surrealism but I wanted something more meta, I remember this short story a few years ago where the character had multiple personalities and the reader became one of them

Have any /lit/izens been academically unexceptional at English, whether at school, sixth form, or degree level? Like, even though they read widely and assiduously, only getting average or just-above-average marks?

Is academia a good judge of reading ability?
23 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Academia teaches skills, not processes. You don't truly learn how to read in the intuitive sense, just what the education board thinks will work for you. Most teachers are also shitty at what they do and don't know how to evaluate students placements correctly. The only decent education is saved for elites to place their kids in private schools.

In short, the only way to really be good at reading and language arts is to have your parents teach you from a really early age good vocabulary and reading you sufficient books, not dollar store shit. I believe this was the only way I ever was educated. I started kindergarten early and was always proficient in Lit classes.
>>
>>7619873

if you suck at degree level than you probably just suck at literature.

high school/sixth form/etc. evaluations don't mean much.
