Have you ever made a major life decision based on a novel or writer's experience?
I can't decide whether to marry my gf, leaning toward breaking up in order to avoid domestic life and pursue my curiosities freely. but then I think about kierkegaard and how he tormented himself, having to basically invent a philosophy to deal with dumping regine. and that I will probably just be a miserable, no-name pleb and kill myself.

Doesn't it frustrate you that there is so much trash out there that you have to sift through before you find something worthy of your investment? Lists or awards of various types are little help, as they are too often full of trash as well. How do you pick your next read?

I'm a regular /fit/izen and this is legit my first time posting on here- so be gentle or I'll fuckin' wail on you nerds.
My 21'st is coming up and I'm looking to buy some decent books as a present to myself.
I usually read non-fiction, stuff on axis WWII, fitness. I'm not big on fiction, only read Stephen King, some of the divine comedy, and quite a bit of Blake's poems.
I was recently recommended by /fit/ towards Yukio Mishima- long story short; which ones do I get/would you recommend?

why yes, Lazarillo De Tormes, El Buscon (maybe), If you speak spanish, then Guzman De Alfarache (i'd be jealous) Cervantes also wrote a collection of short stories known as Novelas Ejemplares. Not spanish, but you may check out Gargantua and Pantagruel, Gil Blas, and maybe, maybe the Decameron.

What does /lit/ think of this book?
I thought it was very boring for the 1/3 of it but felt comfy enough reading it since the text is easy enough for a reading after a busy day and good before sleep. Then maybe after the middle, shit starts happening, constant punk'd happenings, some quality trolling. Now I'm like 80% and can't wait to read more.
Why is it described as post-modern though?

I quite liked this book back when I first read it, though. The pacing isn't the best, and like you said the first third of the book is boring, yet comfy and readable. Nicholas Urfe is such a well written character you'll drudge through it pleasantly. Combined with Fowles' really enjoyable and flowing prose you'd have to be a turbopleb not to enjoy it. Really, wasn't this the first book he wrote? Not bad at all if so.
