>Chapter 2: Caelum
Your tired eyes are shut tight. You’re listening to the endless peace of a nearby ocean, wave by wave, as they send a gentle breeze your way. You think of the dream of last night…
“The Angel, and the-” your thoughts are cut off by someone who pushes your arm, softly.
“…Temper! Temper, wake up!” a girls voice exclaims- she continues to push.
“Huh, that’s not my name?” you think, and open up your dreamy eyes.

You’re led on your back, upon soft sands that are hot to touch. There’s an ocean to your left, and above you, a shimmering sky. A girl with short, red hair and a fringe, is to your side, shading you from the Sun; the tide comes across her feet, and goes out. You push your elbows into the sand, and look up at her.

The girl has feminine look, and is in her mid-teens; she has eyes like seas, wide and wild, switching dubiously between yours and your right hand. She has a chiseled, rare nose, and perked up ears, like her immediate impression. You see her as about five foot eight in height, and of a high metabolism. The veins of her slim body are like rivers, running across her Mediterranean skin. Her palms look soft, and they’re moving toward yours; the shining Sun glares over her shoulder as she crouches.
“Come on, Temper! Get up! You said you’d take me to the city today…” she says as she pulls your hand.

You give way, and allow her to pull you up into the bright sunlight- a sun that’s quickly seized by her sun-kissed face…

She is happy you’re awake, a tear of happiness falls from her eye.
“What’s her name? I shouldn’t be rude…” you wonder. “I… I will take you to the city” you proclaim with honesty.

She rushes off in front, along the shoreline, “Come, we have to be quick” she commands, and you pursue her.

A flock of blue-beaked gulls fly over you and her, toward the waters; you and the girl make variant turns to watch them glide in the ocean wind. You notice the Sun beyond blue arrows, setting, and the sky getting redder, as the birds begin to fly westward.

You stop for a second, scanning the city that’s at the end of the beach. There are many sky-scrapers, some smaller than others, all lighting up their signs and rooms. The girl didn’t notice you had stopped, and is a league ahead. You start increase your pace, when out of nowhere you’re sundered by a harsh pain, and your distorted panorama is saturated red.

You are over-encumbered by sinister voices, that all speak over each other. There is a loud silence, and the darkest voice creeps over them all, and says “You will never find her…” and as soon as it’s spoken, the pain resides. You instantly look up at the girls last position, and like the Sun, the girl is gone…

I'm not very well experienced with horror novels, but I'm looking for a book that will genuinely get under my skin, maybe cause me to look over my shoulder. I've currently read Mr. B. Gone, Book of Blood, and House of Leaves.
Nothing against them, but please exclude Stephen King and Dean Koontz.

Also, general horror thread!

Don't know why but I could never get all the way through that.

OP you can try Edge of Running Water by William Sloane.
Haven't finished it yet, but always heard good things.
I think it's totally OOP but you can find an ebook somewhere.

What about shorter stories and novellas?
Are you into Lovecraft?
I never really "got" it until one night when I was home alone a little over decade ago now (so I was younger, with an imagination that hadn't yet been ground down by daily life) I found a site that had some Lovecraft stories on it.

I read The Color Out of Space and have never forgotten it, nor the experience.
Not to say that the story itself is so totally horrifying (it is, if you view it through the modern context of radiation poisoning etc.), but right at that moment, that creepy night, it hit all the right spots.

Lovecraft is somewhat less formulaic than you'd think despite the tropes and cliches he introduced.

There's also the Haunter in the Dark.

Thing is OP, if you want a book that will elicit this response in yourself
>genuinely get under my skin, maybe cause me to look over my shoulder

Then you have to go about the right way of doing it.

You can't for example plonk yourself down on a park bench during a sunny day with the hustle and bustle of happy people doing whatever it is they do going on about you.

Horror fiction needs the right mood and atmosphere. It NEEDS it in order to be effective.
I can't think of any other genre that is so dependent upon the environment and mindset of the reader.

Alone. At night. No other sources of noise but your own breathing and the turning of the page, night rain excepted.

That's it.

Any other way and you're doing yourself a disservice.

The Exorcist and Legion by Blatty.

I don't care if you've seen the films. If read properly as mentioned here >>7834808

then they'll do.

So, recently my friend told me to read this older book since I sorta like reading dark things. /lit/ is this book worth my time? Can anyone give me a review of the book? Please be specific, thanks.

It has no real merit except to make the reader feel bad for the author and the abuse he suffered if they can overlook the writing itself.

Just finished this book.
It was good. Not spectacular.
I'm not sure why it's been rated so highly on goodreads (4.15/5).

It's a story that highlights abuse, racism and sexism and does so without reservations. But apart from that I don't see any great literary merit. It's just a good story that incorporates these elements.

People in emma watson's feminist book club on goodreads (our shared shelf) are raving about it but I don't understand.

What am I missing?

I haven't read Infinite Jest which /lit/ considers a godly work. Is this book (the color purple) supposed to be that good? Really, what am I missing?
>>
>>7832547

Also, I get that the language used is supposed to make a statement on the illiteracy and lack of education but the deliberately bad prose wasn't very appealing to read.

Op here.Well I was reading it and it didnt impressed me on a huge level nor it did disimpressed me...The deep diving into Nehljudov's psychological thoughts and his change of character through the book is very interesting(at least for me) but the end was a little dissatisfying on the other side...

My friend gave me all his old Goosebumps books recently. I started reading them, and was overcome with nostalgia. These were a lot better than I remembered them (even with the now obvious shit-tier writing style that I was oblivious to in 4th grade). And I have a new found appreciation for those God-tier covers.

So, given the cool stories, great covers, massive nostalgia rush, and their massive popularity (I think they've sold over 350 million copies worldwide), and given the man child nature of this site, I have to say, there's really no excuse for not having a board dedicated exclusively to Goosebumps.

But that's just me. Would anyone else here be interested in such a board?

Like I said on the other thread, I would like a RL Stine board, sure, and I could even believe there might be a silent, dormant, unrealized want for the board from the community at large, just waiting to be aroused.

But don't count on Hiroyuki to pick up on it, even if we all demand it. Other than the history board he added, none of the board additions really make much sense, and there are more wanted boards that have not been added.

(Pic related was my favorite cover)

By the rivers of Babylon we sat and wept
when we remembered Zion.
2 There on the poplars
we hung our harps,
3 for there our captors asked us for songs,
our tormentors demanded songs of joy;
they said, “Sing us one of the songs of Zion!”
4 How can we sing the songs of the Lord
while in a foreign land?
5 If I forget you, Jerusalem,
may my right hand forget its skill.
6 May my tongue cling to the roof of my mouth
if I do not remember you,
if I do not consider Jerusalem
my highest joy.
7 Remember, Lord, what the Edomites did
on the day Jerusalem fell.
“Tear it down,” they cried,
“tear it down to its foundations!”
8 Daughter Babylon, doomed to destruction,
happy is the one who repays you
according to what you have done to us.
9 Happy is the one who seizes your infants
and dashes them against the rocks.

everyday wake up a bit more tired

everyday wake up feelin heavy entire

body lags and my brain dont react

like im stuck in a pit of mollasses

watch the people walk around the street

theyre all laughin

feels like theyre laughin at me

too funny to feel no pity

instead he just walks everywhere

collecting thoughts while he looks out and stares

dont worry nobody's aware

dont worry nobody cares

thats all ive got for now
