What would /lit/ rather see:
>a young man forced into the service of a noble woman he loved from afar after seeing her murder a man, and slowly realizing she was a monster from seeing her work and later going father to know he still loves her despite that
>mercenary company behind the lines of a siege just at it is broken, members witnessing the death of the ruler of the city's brother. A wrong place at the right time story as his death allots them something extra, but shunts them into a game they didn't know existed until then.
The second one honestly is the retelling of a TTRPG I GM'd. It was in a homebrewed system and setting that has its aesthetics for flora and fauna modeled after the Cambrian explosion.
I need to get back to writing again (wrote three novels years ago, haven't written in two years however) and need a place to start.
Honestly neither of these ideas sound stellar, but I need to start somewhere until my creativity returns.
I'm writing a religious scripture of some sort and I'm still in the creation phase
Here's the first little sample
I'm interested in the idea of ambient literature, broadly considered. Any suggestions or thoughts?
bonus points for non-poetry :)
>>8160316
you should probably define what you mean by "ambient" in the literary sense
>>8160316
i know tao lin is mostly a meme but i think shoplifting from american apparel could be considered ambient, to me it feels like it flows without much focus and the things that happen are never really elaborated on for too long, but not in a bad or unpleasant way
>>8160325
vague, indirect, pleasantly disoriented
Looking for an in depth fantasy world.

what are some story themes you enjoy or wanna see more of? I personally enjoy characters trying to find purpose in life, but that's been done a million times before
>>8160116
Inability of communication between people - "Tower of Babel".
Virtue of ignorance and malignity of knowledge, or another way round - "The Fool".
Man creating something bigger than man, emergence
>>8160116
characters who, after a period of turmoil or despondence or failed plans, find comfort and solace in some small thing
There's a neat story by J.G. Ballard about the remains of a giant that washes ashore. People come and start vandalising the corpse, stealing bodyparts, destroying it, etc. and eventually it disappears and they doubt it existed in the first place. I like that idea; of people destroying something profound by their own tokenisms and having to live in the aftermath of their decadence.
Hey /lit/ I have a problem.
A lot of my sentences end up like this.
"He ____. He then ____. He ____. After that, he ____."
How do I shake it up more?
thanks
>>8160018
He___ . Then__- ___ After __
It's not that hard unless you are changing POV or the character in question it seems rather pointless
>>8160018
just be conscious of it when you do it and try restructure it
Just write more interesting sentences. Begin more sentences with dependent clauses.
>He walked to the store. He bought eggs.
Could be
>He walked to the store. With three dollars in his wallet, he only bought eggs.
Those aren't great, but I'm just trying to give you an idea of what I mean. Your sentences will sound a lot better if 1) they vary in length and 2) they don't sound repetitive like you mentioned in your post.
ITT: Novels you like by writers you don't like
I couldn't get through Catcher in the Rye when I tried reading it. I couldn't even get through the first few pages of pic related the first few times I tried picking it up. But one day, something clicked, and I ended up seeing it through to the end. I enjoyed it so much, that I picked up Nine Stories...
And after reading through half of it, I had to put it down because I didn't like it.
Why do you like FandZ?

Stephen King - Dark Tower 1
Cormac McCarthy - The Road
Haruki Murakami - Norwegian Wood
If you liked Franny and Zooey, Raise High the Roofbeam, Carpenters! ad Seymour: An Introduction would probably be up your alley.
Hypothetically speaking, how would you describe the perfect booktuber channel? Does that channel already exist?
What kind of books would you like to see reviewed\discussed?
How do they review? In-depth, like a Yale professor, or like a personal recommendation, leaving the rest to your experience as a reader?
What other videos do they do? Topical discussions? Gratuitous book hauls?
I'm asking for a friend.
It's a lot like redtube. Product so vanilla I stop about two minutes in.
>>8159933
I'd like to watch a cute girl discovering a world of real literature, gradually abandoning YA and trashy romance novels. The truest experience of 21st century is experiencing the experience of another.
Set out to take advantage over the format. The booktuber should ask themself what they can add that would convey it must be in a video format rather than in text. Videos have visual and audio attached, think of good films and what's different from film and literature. Often I see videos that could've been easily summed in a paragraph and they waste my time which makes me angry. The medium is the message, so take full advantage of the medium for the sake of the message.

Was he the rightful heir to Stirner?
Damnit everytime I put this guy on the backlog I mess up and slip on Jiddu instead and later wonder what he's doing there

Jiddu's a fag desu.
You need U.G. who says things like 'Mother Teresa is a lesbian bitch' and 'India should be grateful to Hitler, not Gandhi'
"Heir" would imply there's anything to be inherited, when in fact it's the other way around, and both rejected the law of inheritance.
Hey /lit/, can I implore you guys to help me polish up a short story? This is going to be a major component in a business proposal for my cafe. I need it to invoke the feeling of escaping to your favorite cafe in a small busy suburb. But my writing is terrible. I haven't written in years so pls no bully ;-;
>I step through the door like I have at least a dozen times since they opened. The aroma of newly ground coffee and freshly baked bagels comforts me while the smooth jazz playing dimly coaxes me to unwind after a hectic morning at the office.
>Over by the window sits a group of health conscious college students drinking frozen fruit waters and eating roasted veggie wraps. All the ingredients here are clean, freshly made, and locally sourced. I take my place in line. The woman in front of me ordering fit her whole office lists seemingly complicated coffee drinks but the barista behind the counter is a master of her craft and doesn't break a sweat.
>I direct my eyes to the baked goods in the display case. Ooh, that looks good. A Napoleon. Almond paste and pastry cream between flaky layers of delicate dough. I'll have to remind myself to pick one up I my way home tonight. I look at the menu board and see that the new bagel this week is jalapeƱo cheddar. That would go really good with eggs bacon lettuce and tomato in the morning. Maybe I'll try a roast pork and broccoli rabe sandwich today. By decide to get my usual. African peanut stew I'm a bread bowl with a Greek salad. And a specialty tea. Yes, lunch has never been so good. My attention drifts back to the counter where the barista is carefully typing the last mocha latte with foam. She pays and leaves and I step forward.
>"Hi, welcome back," The barista smiles. "Your usual?" I nod, "and a white pineapple tea." As she readies my order I take a moment to admire the artwork adorning the walls. It's all from local artists or something. My order is ready, I finish paying just as a small group of people enters. Some people come here to order gourmet baked goods and coffee as gifts. Some are professionals treating their clients to a fresh lunch. Some are on their way to work getting a breakfast sandwich and coffee in the morning. Ann's others come for the power smoothies and frozen fruit waters after a hard workout. Whatever the reason they sure are becoming popular.
>"Enjoy!" The barista waves as I turn to leave.
I don't know how else to end it. Thoughts?
Well, it doesn't seem like a story. It seems like an advertisement.
Either write some generic ad copy or write a decent short story. This attempt at a middleground is just embarassing.
>>8159507
I need it to be both. But showcasing all the different aspects of this cafe. I'm not a writer. I'm a baker. I'm not able to paint pictures with words.

Idk, I'll have to look into the article. It looks interesting. I'd say that looking at the way people think as a pathological disease to be akin to a form of eugenics, but hey, if we could essentially just altar people's minds to make them not want to hurt other people... well maybe that would result in some more challenging philosophical issues, like a sort of clockwork orange sort of ordeal. I dunno, especially not if it involves lobotomies or castration, like the united states apparently used to do to ill behaved children and people with low test scores. The universe is ultimately a chaotic place though, but I've said this a million fucking times. I think attempts to bring order to it are often mislead, and come from a place of vindiction and brutality and prejudice, rather than actual desire to make the world a better place. I believe that's what the left wing tries to do, is look at things from a more freeing and liberating point of view, but I know there's no convincing anyone of that who isn't already convinced otherwise.
