How bad are the fire and ice books compared to the show? I really do hate games of thrones, I think it's quite disgusting. But I've noticed when discussing with fans of the books many of the things that I have issues with are only present in the show - according to them at least. Even articles that are critical of the show will often contrast it with the books assessing that the problems they address are not present in the books or they contrast how things were handled and portrayed in both version. The main difference seemingly that there is a purpose and message and genuine character development in RR's work rather than just shock value and more shock value.
So should I give them a try? I need something lowbrow to listen to when I work out anyway.

The books put the show to shame. You would not waste your time reading them anon. The show twists the characters to sell to mainstream entertainment, while Martin writes to dwindling fans of written text, not pandering at all. Though he writes a lot about food and fluff, and the sex is more gratuitous than the show, the actual meat and potatoes of the story is much more complex and better in my opinion.
>>8239248
i have only read the first book so i don't have much to go on but overall i'd say the book was better than the show, mainly because you have a window into what characters are thinking when things happen to them or around them.
the prose isn't great, though, and i don't find the characters or story to be interesting at all. but i tend to dislike pretty much everything so...
read the first book. even though it seems long, it's a pretty quick read.

Thanks fellows. Looking forward to remembering the author's poor looks while reading the sex scenes.
Is anyone in your family a published writer?
my dad is a sports journalist with a couple books and my mom worked in the newspaper game awhile, too
I wrote about not-sports for a couple school papers and then was a columnist for a media group covering MMA. Now I have a memoir project cooking
Not in my family, but I went to high school with someone whose mother is a bestselling author of some fantasy series
I haven't ready any of the books, but I understand they're sort of Twilight-esque.
My uncle published his first novel last month. My grandfather also wrote a novel manuscript about 30 years ago but lost it.
Hey guys, German-language lit thread? I'm learning the language and I'd like to choose a book to read as a goal. For example, my goal for Spanish is to read Don Quixote. What would be a good seminal work in German that I could choose as a fun milestone to aim for in my language study?

What are some forgotten books that were once touted as being the future of literature/supposed modern classics? Like, meme-lit from 10-20 years ago

John Green doesn't write books, he writes toilet paper for the use of deathly cholera patients in their final moments. As for psuedo lit, I got weirdly into Anne Rice when I was about 13, I can't really explain why.

Roberto Pinchas
But in all seriousness, it's probably Pynchon.
>>8238261
It's Stine.
The last book you read is now written by Stephen King
What changes? How bad is the ending? Where in Maine is it set?

It would be kind of a winding staircase into nothingness that I suppose he thought would be deep.

I have no idea how to answer any of those questions

Earth Abides.
Same book but with a few more people, a magical negress, Flagg, Trashcan Man and the Monster Shouter.
>tfw can longer appreciate film or television because they're too pleb for my liking
I'll stick to reading, thank you very much.

Tuor had it too good, immortality and elf bitch on the side while being born human.
His cousin was far more interesting.
I want to challenge myself, increasing the value of myself by bettering myself. I'm thinking of reading philosophy. But i'm not a christian. What are some good philosophy books that aren't christian based ?

Guys..
I was wondering if anyone here has published a book?
If so:
* What's your book?
* How was the process of publishing?
* How much money did you make?
* How'd you feel afterwards?
I want to publish a novel for the Amazon Kindle about robosexual relations with robo-wives and the effect it has on society, the economy, and feminism.
It follows the story of a man who lives his life through the robosexual revolution, a span of 10 years which culminates in the downfall of mankind.
I'm thinking the book should be along the lines of semi-serious, ridiculous, and satiric.
What are your guy's thoughts? What do you want to see?

Sounds interesting but would never read.
What would make you want to read it?

Do the Ilvermorny houses line up with the Hogwarts houses?
Horned Serpent seems like Ravenclaw lite based on the blurb, Pukwudgie like Hufflepuff lite, and Thunderbird like Gryffindor lite.
>>8233077
None of the Ilvermorny houses seem to be the "bad" house like Slytherin.
What makes you think that Hufflepuff isn't Horned Serpent lite, etc?
>>8233313
Hufflepuff is all about gay shit like following the rules and being a super nice person. Horned Serpent is about expanding the mind and progressing knowledge, like Ravenclaw.
Tell me about your dreams, anon.
i just dream about sucking my mom's dick

i dreamed about you sigmund, you were on a boat, i floated onto the boat, you wanted to care for me (i could see it in your eyes), you offered me your extremely young daughter (by hand gesture), she was wearing a light old fashioned dress and sun hat, was blond, though i was not so much interested in her than focused on your presence, the dream was black and white, i wanted to hear something from you but would not want to open talking with you - i was in fact resistant, extremely reluctant, i wanted to avoid you, what does this mean mr. freud?
I dreamed that Jung made Freud faint multiple times due to his rekt, rigid worldview. And that true armchair psychologists consider Freud a fraud.
Who is the most well written/realized fictional character of all time?
Obviously you can include film/TV and other media in the equation.

>1. Society ought to discourage economically inefficient activities.
>2. If some good A can be created to fill a need, and there is an existing & available good B that fills that need equally well, then it is economically inefficient to use A and not B.
>3. Consumers of new art would be equally satisfied by existing art.
>4. By 2 & 3: it is economically inefficient to produce new art.
>∴ By 1 & 4: Society ought to discourage new art.
>In short: old stuff is as good as the new, and it’s cheaper; so making new stuff is wasteful.
Thoughts?
>>8242492
1 and 3 are both absolutely baseless and false.
Art should not be an "economic" question at all on a large scale. That's an autistic engineer's line of thinking.
Yes, let us ban all humanities degrees as well. STEM master-race xD!!
>tfw all philosophy boils down to the 2nd law of thermodynamics
utility isn't as central to human experience as whoever wrote this believes. being is impractical in itself.
and anyone who cites tvtropes in order to further an argument can only be so credible.
