how has he never been involved in a scandal or something? Did he never get in an argument with someone in 60 years? If someone hated
him he could just say "pynchons a racist" and force him to come out of hiding and refute the claim. I'm surprised no one tried
baiting him. i'm not even famous and if I got into an argument with someone there would be 4 of my friends talking about it on
twitter and calling me names and picking sides, i dunno i find his life confusing

Pynchon doesn't exist. He's a fine mist of a myth conjured by a loose collective of engineering majors who have friends in the humanities.

Accept that everyone else is in the same situation. Accept that this will never change. Don't pretend like you know more than you do. Move along.

I'm facing my own ghosts here and there is an idea that haunts me and it's making me feel miserable all the time: the idea that there is one way to do things that is better than all the others. The idea of this certain path that exists somewhere that will tell us the secret of how to do anything and be anything, and that we are actually able to know it. You know, that there is one way that is correct, out of all others. Or maybe I can say this one way is out of reach, but at least we can revolve around it, as if that certainty was actually there.

I need an antidote to my dependence on trying to be certain.

What books, authors, poets, thinkers, militants, artists and other do you recommend to me? Which quote do you have to share? What link can you give?

youd literally need a machine that calculates what everyone else is gonna do and predicts market variations and fucking political changes etc... All this things ultimately change ur life greatly, then itd have to determine based on this predicted changes whats better for u.

chances are the best u can do is know ur skills and needs and to just hone them so you dont suck as a person. If you dont know what you're good at or what you want then chances are youre a retard.

It aint that complicated nigga.

I just got done reading pic related and all I have to say is that, well, I think Atlas shrugged is beyond underrated

The way she details characters is remarkable, the way Rand constructed the world is so close to how bad our world is, it's almost terrifying, and the plot twist with Galt is almost Shakespearean in how revolutionary this book was to international politics and the way humanity views culture

I have some issues with the book, both in an artistic sense and a social sense, but I notice its harshest critics are meme-spouting liberals who never even read it.

"Earlier in this game she was nervous, constipated,
wondering if this was anything like male impotence. But
thoughtful Pointsman, anticipating this, has been sending
laxative pills with her meals. Now her intestines whine softly,
and she feels shit begin to slide down and out. He kneels
with his arms up holding the rich cape. A dark turd appears
out the crevice, out of the absolute darkness between her
white buttocks. He spreads his knees, awkwardly, until he
can feel the leather of her boots. He leans forward to
surround the hot turd with his lips, sucking on it tenderly,
licking along its lower side . . . he is thinking, he’s sorry, he
can’t help it, thinking of a Negro’s penis, yes he knows it
abrogates part of the conditions set, but it will not be
denied, the image of a brute African who will make him
behave. . . . The stink of shit floods his nose, gathering him,
surrounding. It is the smell of Passchendaele, of the Salient.
Mixed with the mud, and the putrefaction of corpses, it was
the sovereign smell of their first meeting, and her emblem.
The turd slides into his mouth, down to his gullet. He gags,
but bravely clamps his teeth shut. Bread that would only
have floated in porcelain waters somewhere, unseen,
untasted—risen now and baked in the bitter intestinal Oven
to bread we know, bread that’s light as domestic comfort,
secret as death in bed . . . Spasms in his throat continue.
The pain is terrible. With his tongue he mashes shit against
the roof of his mouth and begins to chew, thickly now, the
only sound in the room. . . .
There are two more turds, smaller ones, and when he has
eaten these, residual shit to lick out of her anus. He prays
that she’ll let him drop the cape over himself, to be allowed,
in the silk-lined darkness, to stay a while longer with his
submissive tongue straining upward into her asshole. But
she moves away. The fur evaporates from his hands. She
orders him to masturbate for her."

Fantasy novels can run the risk of having very similar worlds. Without creative worldbuilding I loose interest really fast. I saw a post about creating a world that had vasts forests instead of oceans. The forest deepened and grew the deeper they got, with giant deer instead of whales etc. Does anyone here have interesting ideas and settings they would love to right about?

Alright so I need feedback on these series, I'm thinking about reading them.

The Demon Cycle series by Peter V. Brett
The Night Angel trilogy by Brent Weeks
The Broken Empire series by Mark Lawrence
The First Law series by Joe Abercrombie
The Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson
The Gentleman Bastard series by Scott Lynch
The Powder Mage series by Brain McClellan
The Lightbringer series by Brent Weeks
The Raven Shadow series by Anthony Ryan
The Magicans series by Lev Grossman
The Chronicle of the Unhewn Throne series by Brain Staveley
The Malazan Book of the Fallen series by Steven Erikson
The Dagger and the Coin series by Daniel Abraham.

I really would like a book series that can rival the Kingkiller Chronicle series by Patrick Rothfuss, I absolutely adored that series. I'm still waiting on the third book but the first two books in the series were phenomenal, I couldn't put them down once I started reading them. I want a book series that will give me that sensation again, a really good fantasy series that draws me in.

Jesus christ. There's nothing wrong with asking. But check the catalog. Go to the sffg. And don't ask people to give you information about several hundred series.
>>
Ya what this anon said >>8245436

Also, just a warning, Stormlight was so good that I had to stop reading for 1 week because everything else paled in comparison.
>>
>>8245436
Sorry, I wasn't expecting people to give me feedback on EVERY series I listed. I just wanted feedback on the series that they have read, or at least heard of. Didn't mean to overwhelm anyone, just if you read the series then some feedback on it would be good, that's all.

I don't come on /lit/ whatsoever so I didn't think to check the catalog first, my mistake.

>>8245446
Yeah I've also heard that Stormlight is a phenomenal fictional/fantasy work, just sucks the first book is over 1,000 pages or something like that.

I fell so far behind in literature. Half way through college and I'm just starting to read some pretty basic level shit, pic related. I've always loved dystopian and almost any fantasy book with great world building. Does anyone have suggestions to get my sub-par ass back to better reading levels?

If you haven't read the canon by age 15 then there's no hope. Why aspire at anything when you've already failed at a literary life? Forget about literature and continue living your pleb life in bliss, you'll only live in misery and suffering if you don't; or just kill your self.

Did Auster write any book worth reading or should I just never read anything from him ever again?

I've started reading Dubliners in parallel and it's so fantastic in comparison that I feel Joyce and Auster don't even share the same profession.

If someone holds Paul Auster in high regards, please explain.

Also, should I read Portrait of the Artist as a young man after Dubliners or go straight to Ulysses?
Should have read Joyce way before, his ability to encompass the human condition is awe-inspiring

Portrait before Ulysses. The other way around doesn't make much sense. Haven't ever read Auster, so couldn't tell.
>>

>tfw took an Auster class where we read 7 of his books

One trick pony, really. The New York Trilogy and Book of Illusions are decent reads, though.
>>
That book ends in a very strange way.

Should've read the New York Trilogy first, your reading of Brooklyn Follies would have been more critical. His books after 2000 are very slice-of-life, which was the pleasure I derived from Brooklyn Follies.

Like 4 & 5 it may or may not be by Rabelais (though detractors' arguments are IMO the weakest in that they all boil down to it not being literary)

I never read the books, but when I was a teenager watching The Two Towers and Aragorn/King Whatshisname went on their last ride through the army or Mordor to die fighting when Gandalf showed up out of nowhere with the Riders of Rohan I just about jizzed my pants.
