Is his prose flatulent and overwrought?

Yes.

Or as he'd put it: Why howdy doody why don't you snuggle the big fat between your niggly-piggly teeth while I ponder just what delicious sweetmeats I have in the festering oblivion of my pockets.
>>
Overwrought is too kind of a word but its what we have for the moment
>>
>>8322419
I just picked up On Being Blue and In the Heart of the Heart of the Country. I read 10ish pages of each, just kinda flipping through. I'd agree it's a bit much... I mean, it's nice sometimes, but overwrought. Probably the right word.

Again, I haven't read much at all. Looking forward to actually reading it though.

Started reading this on pdf. Ive done no background checks on this the name sounded interestimg. Im only on the first day and theres already sodomy, masochism, and young girly boys getting fondled. Now i wanna know what have i gotten myself into. Any other overtly sexual literature that isnt romance that you guys can reccommend? Caligula is a book too right?

Story of the Eye is a /pervcore/ classic. Also, the meme'd Gravity's Rainbow if you want a 800 page book of smut, also pretty good.

Where do i start with poetry?

Not OP, but I too have been wondering this. I write prose all the time but whenever I try to get into poetry it seems so formulaic to me, so rule-driven. Maybe that's just me being negatively influenced by some of the /lit/fags, though.

Philipp Meyer grew up in a working class neighborhood in Baltimore. His mother is an artist; his father taught college science for twenty years after working variously as a cabinet maker, electrician, and art installer. The neighborhood, Hampden, had been hit hard by the collapse of various heavy industries, and crime and unemployment were high. Meyer attended city public schools until dropping out at age 16 and getting a GED. He spent the next five years working as a bicycle mechanic and occasionally volunteering at Baltimore’s Shock Trauma Center.

At age 20, he began taking classes at a variety of colleges in Baltimore and decided to become a writer. He also decided to leave his hometown, and at 22, on his third attempt at applying to various Ivy League colleges, he was admitted to Cornell University. He graduated with a degree in English and a mountain of debt and headed for Wall Street to pay off his student loans.

After getting a job with the Swiss investment bank UBS, Meyer did training in London and Zurich and was assigned to a derivatives trading desk. After several years at UBS, he’d paid off most of his student loans and decided to pursue his dream of becoming a writer. When his savings ran out he took jobs as an emergency medical technician and construction worker. He was preparing for a second career as a paramedic when he was admitted to the MFA program at the Michener Center for Writers in Austin, TX. While attending grad school he continued to do emergency medical work, driving to New Orleans just as Hurricane Katrina hit and working as an EMT during that storm.

Meyer's first novel, American Rust, won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. Meyer was also awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Dobie Paisano Fellowship, and named one of the New Yorker's 20 best writers under 40.

Meyer's second novel, The Son, was runner-up for the Pulitzer Prize in Literature. So far The Son has been on the bestseller list in eight countries. The Son will be debuting as a television series from AMC in 2017, with Meyer as the creator and head writer.

Meyer lives in Austin, TX.

I've been writing for two years now, but have found that without padding the shit out of my stories they normally can't reach full book length (most not even novella length)

So if I publish, do I publish them individually as short stories or as a collection?
7 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Your problem is you can't think of anything more interesting than what you've written so far.

Create a universe that's interesting and work from there. Character-based works are hard as shit and not for the level you are at.
>>
>>8322355
What I am currently writing is inspired by Hemingway in general and Lord of The Flies, and it's mainly theme based as opposed to character based
>>
>>8322343
Don't "pad the shit" out of your stories. If you feel they are complete at the length that they are, publish them as long short stories.

I don't care how many anons go on about how scary House of Leaves is. It's a love story. Honestly, when Karen defied her claustrophobia and rescued Navidson from the house I felt so many feels. It's a beautiful book.

Bridge to Terabithia made me cry for days when I was a kid. It churned feelings about death and love inside me that I think to this day make me have a serious fear of commitment because I don't want to see the people I love die.

That and the Sorrow of War which I read much later but it brought out some mighty tears.

Would like to grab some of the more expensive editions by the Folio Society, for example, their book of common prayer, or one of their bibles, especially their medieval one. But I can't justify the expense right now.

Which of the current science fiction awards are not run by SJWs? I haven't been keeping up with that controversy

Is the Philip K Dick award ok?

No, they renamed it to the Philip K Dicks are Evil Tools of Patriarchy and You Gotta Pay Me Back for Slavery award

World Fantasy Award got the SJW treatment when they disavowed my hero Lovecraft because a few uppity nignogs and white cucks got upset about his face being on the award.

Sad Puppies are so autistic they whine about not being able to judge books by their covers

>That’s what’s happened to Science Fiction & Fantasy literature. A few decades ago, if you saw a lovely spaceship on a book cover, with a gorgeous planet in the background, you could be pretty sure you were going to get a rousing space adventure featuring starships and distant, amazing worlds. If you saw a barbarian swinging an axe? You were going to get a rousing fantasy epic with broad-chested heroes who slay monsters, and run off with beautiful women. Battle-armored interstellar jump troops shooting up alien invaders? Yup. A gritty military SF war story, where the humans defeat the odds and save the Earth. And so on, and so forth.

>These days, you can’t be sure.

>The book has a spaceship on the cover, but is it really going to be a story about space exploration and pioneering derring-do? Or is the story merely about racial prejudice and exploitation, with interplanetary or interstellar trappings?

>There’s a sword-swinger on the cover, but is it really about knights battling dragons? Or are the dragons suddenly the good guys, and the sword-swingers are the oppressive colonizers of Dragon Land?

Is that Aeneas? Cause Aeneas is far better than that idiot Ulysses I mean come on that guy is a total dick. Is he even destined by the gods to found a country entirely by himself with no help from the warring city states that already exist there? I mean come on Aeneas is even way better looking.
