Western literature arguably begins and ends with GASS.

I'm an English teacher living in China. I lecture 16-24 year old brats part-time at a local school. Company selected the subject of 'literature' for my class tomorrow.
Although I have a pretty good idea of what I'm going to talk about, I'm curious as to what /lit/ might suggest and I'm willing to implement it in my presentation tomorrow.
Basically we have a group of about 20 Chinese college students, with zero knowledge of occidental literary tradition. Most of them are brainwashed into thinking Chinese culture is best culture. In 120 minutes, I would like to give them some understanding of basic literary terminology in English, show them an approximation of the history of the western canon, and maybe even inspire them to broaden their horizons in said topic.
First time in a long time I'm genuinely excited for my class. How do we do it /lit/?

Anyone here read Marko Kloos Frontlines series?
What do you think about it?
I've had huge problems with reading, but then I downloaded this series as audiobooks, and I love listening to it, but I don't know if it's a good series though. It's a bit shallow. But I like how Kloos describes combat, and the lankies are very welldone aliens.
How does Kloos describe combat?
Sell it to me fa m.

It's purely from the main character's point of view, chaotic and dangerous.
The situations change quickly, and it's believable because you only know what's going on with Andrew and his squad comm.

Can you give me an excerpt if you don't mind? Gonna read this tonight if I'm not busy.
what are the absolutely comfiest books? the books that you read when you come back home after a night out with your friends and read for an hour or two before bed, when youre looking to snuggle up with something comfy before nodding off

What are /lit/'s thoughts on?
I really enjoyed it, to my complete surprise.

i loved it. very very well written, and all the referances, while they may serve to just show how much tartte reads, also play a purpose of their own.
my favorite part was just the setting. beautiful liberal arts college tucked away in new england, with blue sky-ed days and red sky-ed nights

I keep bumping into this book all the time at the moment. Maybe I should just go on and read it.

seems comfy as... FUCK?
What are some REAL NIGGA books that are/were banned, controversial, shocking, strange, about dark subjects and/or just unsettling to read?
Naked Lunch. You're looking for Naked Lunch.

American Psycho was (still is?) banned in Australia
Salman Rushdie's Satanic Verses is a classic, too

Mein Kampf used to be banned and it's perfect for a little edge lord like you ;)
Who else thinks this book is good, but Haruki Murakami's only good book?
1Q84 is a pretty comfy book, despite it's 1000+ page length. It reads fairly easily so it surprisingly doesn't feel its length. It also helps that the slice-of-life nature of the prose means there's always something to draw your attention to.I haven't read any of his other stuff, so I can't say how it compares.
totally agree - but then again i'm not big on magical realism.
nah, i'll throw my hat into the ring for kafka. I like bizarre shit though. being led to the devil by a talking cat is right up my alley.
Okay /lit/, one of my first posts here. I don't read as much as I would like, but I'm an average reader I'd say.
What books, or sections of a book, give you those cozy/comfy feels? The kind of feeling where you want to sit in front of a fireplace with a warm cup of tea/coffee/hot chocolate and a blanket, and just read?
For me it's the first chapter of Tolkien's "Book of Lost Tales I", the chapter about the Cottage of Lost Play. The atmosphere this chapter depicts give me such comfy feelings. Truly love it. A quick quote:
"He was now near the centre of this great island and for many days had wandered its roads, stopping each night at what dwelling of folk he might chance upon, where it hamlet or good town, about the house of eve at the kindling of candles. Now at that time the desire of new sights is least, even in one whose heart is that of an explorer; and then even such a son of Eärendel as was this wayfarer turns his thoughts rather to supper and to rest and the telling of tales before the time of bed and sleep is come."
The first 100 pages of Moby Dick are ultimate comfy

The Sound of Waves is as comfy as it gets.

In what ways have you applied "The Art of War" to your life?

Whenever I get into an argument with a group of people, I slowly isolate the loudest and raunchiest one, making him sound awkward and annoying to the people who are on his side, once he is all alone I go in for the kill and everybody agrees with me.
I don't let sneaky chinese come into my neighborhood.

Ah, the divide-and-conquer strategy.
"If he is taking his ease, give him no rest. If his forces are united, separate them."
Psychologically, what separates a reader from a non-reader?
>>8326205
Reading?
Well, mostly it is because of being read to as a kid, so the same traits associated with parental attention (mot always "love") and active childrearing.
>>8326216
This sounds so mundane and stupid, and I'll get laughed at for saying this, but holy shit this anon is right. I never thought about it that way honestly. But yeah I got read to as a kid so of course I would read as an adult, even if my parents were shitty. Thanks based anon.
What are your thoughts about this fan fiction of Batman?
