Can someone be a great writer without having read too much in childhood and adolescence?
20 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Hypothetically yes but you won't.
>>
>>8677538
Well, that's not true at all.
>>
What makes a great writer?

Making great books - if you've never written a great book you cannot be a great writer.

Now, what makes a book great?

Any combination of beautiful presentation, unique perspective, entertaining progression, unique and useful information, or sheer originality.

Not having read many books may put you at a disadvantage in that you cannot tell the novelty from the hackneyed - the human race has collectively been reading for a very long time, and there are an awful lot of people who have read an awful lot of stories.

Your best bet is in going somewhere and doing something fantastic and writing about that - a fresh experience expressed by an amateur's pen has a value that eclipses the greatest of conventional works.

But beware; the road ahead is a hard one, and there are travellers upon it better prepared to see it's end than you.

Hi /lit/
I come from the land of mu where everyone is literary retarded
Is this any good?

No.
>>
Sort of.

I mean - do you like pseudo-autobiographical fictionalized accounts of legendary drug binges?

Then it's great.

Not high literature - pop literature, well regarded by the "groovy academia" but HST was more interesting as a live specimen than a writer.

Unfortunately his brains are drying in the Colorado sun, and the rest of him is probably in orbit around Jupiter.

>I come from the land of mu!

How about you try again, maybe less gay.

What do you think of Breat Easton Ellis /int/?

Just finished reading everything he wrote, the way he constantly lists the song that is playing on the background makes me think he wishes he was making a film or something

I've got an idea, we make a description of something and we have to guess what we are. Here's an example:
Drifting towards certain demise – though when demise is due isn’t defined.
Sometime in the near future the monster with millions of legs will come to kick us into the hungry abyss, which is his companions’ mouth.
I dread the day, I dread everything apart of my home. I wish I were more in control. That is only for our maker to have.
What I am most afraid of, is that our god controlls the monster.

Thought about including the origin of the picture, but didn't. It's unrelated, i'm at work and used one of the pictures you get in the starter pack.
>>
i don't think you ever have to bother saying "pic unrelated" if your picture is one of the default ones. So that.. there's also a koala.. some flowers... you have seen them all, I'm sure of it.

I can't figure out what you are OP, other than human, do you mean a character in a specific book?

So I'm just after finishing this, and I have to ask: Why do people love this book?

The prose sucks, only two people get any characterization, and even at that they're shit characters. The plot is non existent. Am I missing something here?

Have you noticed the increased level of demoralisation and decadence on /lit/ since /his/ was created? lit was stripped of its pseudo intellectual / worldly innards and is coming to terms with the fact that literature is merely part of the entertainment industry. Except poetry, which has become newly pure through sheer irrelevance.

Is it retarded to study for a PhD in English Lit in 2016?

Has anybody here ever returned to college to study a Masters / PhD years after graduating?

I'm thinking of starting an MA in literature but I'd be 26 when I start and by the time I'd complete a PhD I'd be in my 30s. Not sure if it's worth the risk desu.

>>
A masters is worth it. PhD if you feel you can contribute something worthwhile to the field.
>>
>>8677338
What is the point of a Masters in EngLit if you don't go on to study a PhD?
>>
>>8677338
"if you feel you can contribute something worthwhile to the field?"

Holy shit, do you need a reality check? How could you be so casual about it. A PhD is a massive, massive investment of time and money. And do you know how difficult it is to get a good, tenure track job in academia? Even more so if you're shooting for at least a flagship state university.

Read the Divine Comedy (what you seek in style and content).

Is it worth it to read Thus Spake Tharathustra if I already read Beyond Good and Evil? I heard that it is basically the same material, but in a strange allegorical format. I'm interested in Nietzsche's ideas most of all, over his aesthetics, and don't want to spend my time on TSZ if I already understand the concepts within it.

Why is this board so full of formalists? Do you seriously believe that formalism is the height of literature, or are you just completely unaware of how literature works?

do you believe that your opinion of my text is just as valid as mine?

What makes russian literature so god tier in comparison with the literature of most other countries? Wasn't Russia historically considered some backwater country full of uneducated peasants in the rest Europe? What is it in russian culture that made it able to produce such good writers?
23 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>8676764
They were very self-conscious of Russia's backwardness, for sure, but Dostoevsky in particular considered it an entity apart from Europe with it's own spiritual destiny, so his work, being isolated from the fashions and whims of the day, has aged much better.
>>
>>8676764
Their fiction focused on a lot on common folk, rather than just the aristocrats and the elite.

Probably the worst book I've ever read about Islam.

>Paints Arabs as being these oppressed people surrounded by evil Jews, Arab pagans, and Christians.
>16 pages in and the author claims men ruined Islam, and hopes women can reform it.
>Doesn't bring up that Aisha was a child when Muhammad married her.
>Muhammad was "inspired" one night to start drafting up the blueprint to Islam, rather than taking bits and pieces from the Abrahamic religions.
>Claims Islam is a successful religion, and Christianity fails because Jesus Christ died on the cross while Muhammad died of an illness.
>Claims Islam is the best religion because it requires full sacrifice of the self to Allah, and all genders are equal.

And then this shit happens.

>Justifies the Islamic conquest of Persia and North Africa as that the Muslims just wanted money and they ended up having too much fun with it.
>Totally not a violent outbreak that forced thousands to convert or else risk the sword.

To think I wasted $15.95 on this, expecting a non-biased book on Islam.

thats what you get mate, islam is a very boaring religion anyway, try hinduism, they dont use fear and hate to propagate there agenda and are much more fun they actualy have art and music that sounds nice and isnt just hate against every one else,

It was written by a female white member of the Royal Society of Literature. She received the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire for her writing. Who are you to, then, to trash her fiction with baseless claims of bias?
