Finally read this meme.

So what was Lomax's deal with Walker? I mean, it seemed clear that Lomax was so invested in Walker at any cost just because he was a fellow crip. But then Stoner tells Finch, "It's not what you think it is" suggesting that's not the reason[/quote]

I think that Stoner was implying a sort of nepotism between Lomax and Walker because Lomax identified with Walker's struggle as a disabled person with an inferiority complex, struggling socially, academically, emotionally. Lomax saw him as an extension of his past and didn't want Walker to drown like he did in order to find success in an environment where people around him would have an easier life with half the effort.

Stoner admired Lomax as a man. He didn't like the idea of Lomax having such a compromising weakness for a man in his position. It wasn't some under the table gay shit or anything sensationalist like that. Williams isn't a cheap hack.

I think Finch meant to say they aren't having a homosexual affair that would also be a conflict of interests.

Not sure what other board to look on so I'll start here
I'm looking for a book i read a while back. I cant remember the title or author, but it was about a girl who gets a disease and becomes paralyzed.

A few points in the book are that she gets to the hospital and demands a milkshake, but the staff refuses until her parents demand she gets one and it makes her feel a bit better
Her dad tries to learn an instrument but is terrible at it and they get laughs out of him playing it at the hospital
She gets movement in her hand and itches her thigh at some point

Any ideas, /lit/?

Serious answer: The Temple of the Golden Pavilion by Mishima. It's a good book and you should read it. If you're planning on reading Mishima's bibliography, make sure this book is one of the last books you read because it's one of his best.

This is a nice, short spoopy story. What do you recommend for that one Halloween evening, that can be read in a day?

Dostoevsky's Brothers Karamazov and probably some Kafka. They're not out and out existentialist but they'd be almost inevitably who you'd start with on a course on existentialism.
>>
>>8675440
The play No Exit by Sartre is probably the best crash course in existentialism. Short and informative, lays out the groundwork without really expanding

/lit/, I am about to finish Kant's Critique of Pure Reason. I have already read what I wanted from Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Locke, Leibniz, and Hume.

I want to go on to Frege because I think analytic philosophy will interest me more than others. Should I get a grasp of anything else before Frege?

>>

>Should I get a grasp of anything else before Frege?

You didn't need a grasp of anything else (and half of the things you read to begin with) before getting into Frege really.

/lit/ has an obsession with the history of philosophy and detaching themselves from a conception of what they find reasonable, unreasonable (and equivalently true and untrue).

They seem to read the Greeks and who the fuck not even though they don't agree with their reasoning, to get some kind of idea of the "evolution of philosophical thought". Philosophy for them stops being a quest for truth, fuck that shit.

You're about to have a thoroughly enjoying time (most likely) jumping into the analytics, don't forget to ask yourself what you agree/disagree with every line of the way when you read them. Most philosophers right with the intention of uncovering truth, not adding another page to the "story of philosophy".

To quote Kant:

>For some learned people, philosophy is just the history of philosophy (ancient and modern); these preliminaries aren’t written for them. They must wait their turn. When those who work to draw ·truth· from the well of reason itself have done their work, then the historians can give the world the news about their results. ·But they won’t regard it as news, because· nothing can be said now that the historians won’t think has been said already! And it is safe to predict that they’ll think the same about anything said in the future; human understanding has busied itself for centuries with countless topics in many ways, so it is to be expected that every new idea will resemble something that has been said in the past.
>>
>>8677144
this guy is incredibly right. Read what you think will help you in your search for truth. Read the necessary context to make sure you understand what the fuck you're reading, but that does not necesarily mean to read every single philosopher beforehand.

Everything is interconnected in C&P. It's set in pre-reform Russia. The young are influenced by the upswing of nihilism. Raskolnikov is a poor student, who makes an experiment out of himself. Also predicting Neecha and other "post-modern" philosophers. It shows the ethical, thus religious meaning of murder
