What makes a good children's book?
I'm interested in writing stories that not only teaches the child something but also brings value to the parent reading it to the child.
What were some of your favorite childhood books. If you had a child, what would you read to them?

Dr Seuss taught me to read and count more than the actual school did, then I stepped up to Beverly Cleary (does anyone still read her? Mine were all hand-me-downs), Hardy Boys books, and eventually the Hobbit. I'd give any of them to a kid, along with Brian Jacques who I didn't discover until I was too old, and Gaiman's younger-aimed work like Coraline.

The Little Prince is in a weird limbo for me. I only read it as an adult after seeing it was apparently the highest grossing book of all time according to Wikipedia and because there was a French animated film adaptation that was getting good reviews.

The book is sad in ways that I'm not sure I'd want really little kids (my own if I had any) to read it, but it's also very clearly a children's book that isn't quite a proper chapter book like Roald Dahl's books or the Harry Potter books.

I'm not sure what age group is most appropriate to read The Little Prince.

The best children's books (in the realm of fiction) tend to do similar things:

>don't talk or dumb down material
>have engaging illustrations
>not too long or too short
>use loads of literary techniques

being a good kid's author is tough as hell

Louise Ehler is a great one.

My personal favorite kid's book right now though is Fox by Margaret Wilde. It packs an intensity that most adult books lack

sup /lit/, tomorrow I'm leaving my city to go live and work and write on an island. After being paralyzed by fear I'm finally doing this and I wanted to ask you guys if you know any books about this subject, about traveling or leaving and adjusting to a new life elsewhere. It's kind of soothing for me to think about these type of novels or stories and the writers who may have done this kind of thing, which aren't few as far as I've read.

and no I'm not saying I'm chasing the literary lifestyle or some shit like that, I just want to go live there and work and write on my freetime because yeah, you know, I know you know, when one feels like writing one should simply do it, regardless of results.

and to anyone out there who's afraid of actually doing something like this, fuck it I completely get you, trust me, and let me tell you I also know I mean, I'm sure that you are fucking capable of doing it.

>inb4 no replies or some of you trying to call me out on my shit of a plan to live my life.
I don't care, and I know why you should act like assholes, I've been visiting this board for quite a while now. I fucking love you faggots.

also going to lose internet connection so I'll see you God knows fucking when. I'll check this thread in some hours to see if you have any recommendations. Also yes third world country here excuse my sloppy fucking english.

If you like SF-fantasy, read Lord Valentine's Castle. It's an easy and kind of shallow book but the world is fascinating and the characters travel through most of it.

hey /lit/, I was at a local bookstore and I picked up an 1856 edition KJV since it was only twenty bucks

I'm long overdue for getting breadpilled, any advice on how I should read the Bible? Is the Old Testament very relevant to Christians?

>Is the Old Testament very relevant to Christians?
Yes. The New Testament will not be nearly as edifying without the OT, because the NT is built entirely upon the OT.

My advice is read the books in order. The more you study the History of places and names you don't know, the more you will get out of it. If you are unfamiliar with Babylon, Assyria, Canaan, etc...the less those stories are going to stick. Carthage is a good way of vicariously studying Canaan btw, as Carthage is Phoenician, and Phoenicians are closely related to the Canaanites.

Also, don't be afraid to read other translations. The arguments for King James Onlyism are not very strong if you study the process by which they chose the base Greek texts, while tracing its own Pagan corruptions (that aren't present in the earlier contemporary Bibles that it evolves from). There is no perfect translation, but the KJV is solid, and good to read.

And don't be afraid of the Apocrypha! They were present in both the 1611 KJV and the Septuagint, which was a translation of the OT into Greek by 72 Jewish rabbis in ~200's BC, commissioned by Ptolemy II for the Alexandrian Library. It was widely loved by the Jewish community and the Greeks alike, considered very accurate to the Hebrew, and was considered to be divinely inspired by many. None of our English OT translations base themselves on the Septuagint though, which is a shame. They all use the Masoretic text from ~900s a.d., because this was the de facto Hebrew text during the time of the Reformers, who thought it best to get their Old Testament straight from the Hebrews, thinking they would be the most official source, and not the Greeks. Ironically, "the Greeks" of the Septuagint were indeed also Hebrews, from the pre-Christ era, who did not have the "Jesus is not the messiah!" bias that the Masorites did, since the Septuagint pre-dated the Messiah. The only reason all translations today use the Masoretic text for the OT (which has many significant differences from the Sept.), is simply to uphold the tradition of the Reformers and the 1500's era translations from which all of ours stem. The Reformers were simply not aware of the quality and historical significance of the Septuagint (which was the "Bible" that Christ and the Apostles used)

Luther, being the most influential Reformer, had much to do with defining Protestant theology. He argued to remove some "apocryphal" books because they contained things that disagreed with some of his beliefs, and he used the writings of Jerome (translator of the Latin Vulgate in ~350 ad) to substantiate his claims. Jerome argued that certain, now apocryphal books were "not inspired" based on learnings from his Hebrew tutors, as he was one of the first translators to try and learn Hebrew himself for direct translation instead of going from the common Greek Septuagint into Latin.

Just another example of post-schism Jews indirectly influencing Christian theology, from Jerome down to Luther.

>Is the Old Testament very relevant to Christians?

The Old Testament is substantially the sign and shadow that the New Testament casts light on and reveals the true meaning of. Although there are many beneficial stories, precepts, and reflections in it even without the light that the New Testament casts upon it.

>any advice on how I should read the Bible?

Don't read it like a novel, cover to cover. It's not a single book, but a library or collection of books; that said, you pick a book to read according to your need, e.g. Genesis & Exodus for sacred history and the foundations of the whole Bible; Deuteronomy and Leviticus for knowledge of the Mosaic Law; Judges and Kings for history of the Israelites; the Psalms for theological poetry and reflection; Proverbs for advice; Ecclesiastes and Job for reflection on suffering and futility, etc.

For first time reading, I recommend this:

Ecclesiastes, Genesis, Exodus, the Four Gospels, the Acts of the Apostles.
Then feel free to read what you like, but I especially recommend the Epistles (of the New Testament), Samuel & Kings, and then the Major Prophets.
Also, feel free to dip in and out of the Psalms at any time.

Hey /lit/, how do you respond to an accusation of plagiarism?

After turning in a half-baked research paper abstract for grading, my English professor accused me of plagiarizing and slapped a zero on the assignment. It's is a first for me, and I have no idea how to approach this. What do?

>>
>>8673439
Checking for this kind of thing is simple for professors. It would probably be easy for him to provide proof.

OP you blew this one- hopefully your grade is enough to cushion the fall, if not you hopefully have enough time to mend it.
>>
>>8673439
Outside my thesis not being especially clear and specific, nope. I did formulate the thing on a late night homework binge, but I guess it was just vague enough to trigger something.

>>8673442
That's the unfortunate thing, we've had only a handful of graded work and this paper is so heavily weighted it dropped me significantly.

I just hope whatever algorithm their plagiarism checker uses doesn't trigger on the final draft, but if it hit on an hour of typing bullshit I'm not optimistic.

If so, where do I start?

Is he right, /lit/? It does seem like the publishing world has become more and more commercial, with success having little to do with the actual art

It is not wrong that publishing is about commercial success and not art, it is wrong to think that publishing has ever been about anything else.

>>

its always been this way. hawthorne famously lamented that the best selling books of his time were sentimental trash churned out by a "damned mob of scribbling women," melville died believing he was a failure, kafka too (most of his work was pulished posthumously). just a few examples.
>>
>>8673008
Pretty sound advice. I'd also add something like, "make sure you have interests outside of writing" as well.

Pic related is pretty much it. Start with Sklansky and go for The Doyleâ„¢. Hansen is pretty good because of the really cool structure, it's really an epic tournament. Caro and Harrington are good side books. Also, watch jcarver on twitch. shit helps more than you think. and play a LOT, really.

Don't forget Harrington on Hold 'em
>>
>>8673004
I forgot something: even though super system is the obvious go-to, its general influence has the side effect of defining how most mediocre players play. Most people sitting on 0.5/1 at pokerstars will have read it and will play religiously following it, so don't fall for the temptation to play like them and instead use that to getting reads into them. For example, Doyle reccomends leadbetting in a flop with a 4-flush, and there are players who ALWAYS do that. try to get those types of tells.
