Where does one begin with Kierkegaard? I never allotted him much thought before, understanding him to be a religious writer, but I recently stumbled upon a page of his quotes and suspect his is a true artistry. There's a real poetry to his paradoxes and I look forward to better knowing them. Also, is there a de facto translation I should pursue?

I can't guarantee that this is good advice because I haven't followed it myself.

I think you're supposed to start with Either/Or. He wrote all his books to be read in a specific order, I think.

remember the concept of pseudonyms, it's a big deal in his work. don't uncritically think that whatever he's saying in a certain passage is what he actually believes

People attribute it's difficulty to the wrong places. Benjy's section is cake compared to Quentin's. But just read it.

>friends with prominent artists and criminals
>unapologetic faggot, pre- gay-rights era

Has any author lived a more interesting life than Mr. Burroughs?

well maybe not as interesting as Burroughs, but still pretty fascinating

Has anyone read all of The Story of Civilization? Just ordered all 11 volumes, have no idea when I'll ever get to reading them but figured it's cool to have a complete history of humanity from start to finish.

It's pretty old and out dated, and not academically rigorous. I wouldn't recommend actually reading it.

You're better off getting Roberts' History of the World or Susan Wise Bauer's series. Or for a short version, Gombrich's Little History of the World. I've heard The Human Web is good too.

Hobsbawm has a good series covering from 1789 and on, and R.R. Palmer's textbook covers the modern world.

You have 10 seconds to disprove Dennet's epiphenomenalism.

>In the philosophy of mind, the China brain thought experiment (also known as the Chinese Nation or Chinese Gym) considers what would happen if each member of the Chinese nation were asked to simulate the action of one neuron in the brain, using telephones or walkie-talkies to simulate the axons and dendrites that connect neurons. Would this arrangement have a mind or consciousness in the same way that brains do?
>Some philosophers, like Daniel Dennett, have concluded that the China brain does create a mental state.[3] Functionalist philosophers of mind endorse the idea that something like the China brain can realise a mind, and that neurons are, in principle, not the only material that can create a mental state.

Does anyone have an archive of the Genius page for The Waste Land? It was a great resource - as good as any secondary literature on the poem I've seen - but now it's only "hosted" on the goddawful bartleby site that is horribly unreadable. It's a fucking crime.

Can anybody tell me what the fuck this book is about? What does Marlowe see in Kurtz and what moral victory does Kurtz gain? My class says the river is a metaphor for a snake, but I say it's an Artery. Can I defend that?

just look at the title of the book

it's about the fundamental depravity of the human heart and the fundamental weirdness of human existence
>>
Arteries lead to the heart. They're descending into madness/out of it.

I haven't read the book is that the one where the civilized guys live among tribals and slowly go crazy? If its the one I'm thinking of then it's definitely symbolic of their journey towards madness, as the river is prevelant throughout.

I don't understand the snake comparison tho

This is the hardest fucking book I have ever tried to read in my life, has Marx never heard of a full stop?

Germans (in linguistic sense) do not use full stop because their intellect allows them continue eternally within the same idea. It makes it tremendously inacessable. Kant himself violates the categorical imperative because if everybody were to write such ridiculously complex books nobody could learn how to read

skip the first three chapters.
