When I was young I used to read a lot of fiction, like Redwall and such.
I fell out of the habit, and now I'm trying to catch up with the classics.
However, there is one problem:
Reading is little more than scanning the pages, feeling what I'm ought to feel according to the story, and then shelving the book and moving on to the next one.
But then, on the contrary to this, you can find countless essays on the themes and whatnot of a single book, and that is what intrigues me.
So it may sound stupid, but... How do I learn to read more deeply?
Pull the trigger.
Best reason to read deeply is to communicate, so the best way to read deeply is to write.

When you are reading scrunch up your face while reading. Make sure you are straining your facial muscles. Your face should be sore after a reading session. Remember no pain no gain.
Thoughts on this fella? What are his essential books? Where do i start with him? Is he accessible for someone new to literature (me)?
>>9012571
I just finished east of Eden, my first Steinbeck.
It is good for beginners, except maybe the length.
Very comfy
Nice but easy to read prose.
A little heavy handed on some things though, imo.
>>9012571
Sure of course he's readable. Of Mice and Men is pretty frequently assigned in middle/high school I think, and is also very good and very short. I don't know how representative it is, I haven't read anything else.
He is as accessible as it gets, no worries there.
The bare minimum would be Of Mice and Men -> The Grapes of Wrath > East of Eden
But he has lots more worth reading. Cannery Row is well liked on /lit/, I recommend reading that too. if you want more after those four you'll have a good idea of where to go next based on what in particular you liked.
Well, /lit/, what are your creative powers?

How much science do I need to know to write science fiction?
>>9012550
none just make everything up.
Why do you want to write sci-fi if you don't know science? Just write fantasy, or shitty space operas
>>9012550
strictly speaking, none, but these days "hard" science fiction, or science fiction which appears hard has been very successful.
Used to be people could get away with saying Jupiter was home to a planet of aliens and everyone would just go along, but modern audiences know more than back then and seem less willing to suspend their disbelief all the way.
How do i read this french bastard?
are his "Thoughts" just random ramblings? which of his texts should read first?

It's part of the canon you meme man
I wrote this.
I appreciate the never ending sameness. Although I've had days like this before.we're sitting on my couch. 3 generations of you have had this same day, this talk, these thoughts. all on my couch. why do you(all) react like that? This one's on me though. i need a new couch. shes going to remember it, my response and my couch. my choice in words will be a defining moment for us. this is some kind of measurement of my worth. I've done this before though. it gets so much easier actually. easier to do, but this one hurts. the place where things start to go south. I know it's happening before anything is said, she doesn't even know it. I bet she doesn't even know what she's doing. We'll see if I can fix this. patch things up. get her to sweep this under the carpet. The carpets going to have hills. lifes forcing you out of your comfortable routine.
-what?
He had been staring at a tiny crack in the wall above the fireplace, just over the tv on the mantle. a blemish in an otherwise perfectly good wall. He could count minutes between each second that passed. his eyes stinging with each blink, an hour in between.
where did that come from. is something like that dangerous? everyone will be able to see it when they come in. the walls will probably crumble. should I fix that? it's not really broken. should just hang something up there.
-what are you thinking?
what am I thinking? that's a good question.

It's not that bad. Don't know why he said that. Nothing wrong with the sentiment, at least. Good rhythm. Second sentence contradicts slightly but in a nice way. I need more to understand what's exactly going on. I'd like a more consistent intended reader. "I need a new couch" is an internal thought, "I've done this before though" is telling someone something. The crack is a slightly unnecessary and pushy metaphor imo. And I don't like the last sentence, really.
Bernard Cornwell is a fairly decent meme writer.
His version of Arthur is the best by far.

Like every author that is constantly spitting out books, they're very formulaic and repetitive.
>>9012472
Which is why you only read the cream of the crop and disregard the rest.

If a writer is any good you shouldn't have to ignore 90% of his work.

What e-book readers do you guys recommend?
Hopefully one i can pirate books onto

Pretty much any because of Calibre. Paperwhite is nice though.

Kobo Aura One if you value good sleep

Just a kobo aura in general. Their DRM is less restrictive than Amazon's, they read more file formats and you can expand their memory with an SD card
Why don't works of literature feature illustrations every few pages? It would add alot too the work.

So why are you asking such a silly question?

Yolo.
I did this too. It was such a slog, but I doubt any others are better. It's just a dragging book, besides most of the second volume

Hello /lit/, I come to you with some questions regarding philosophy.
My main interesting on the subject is existentialism. What it means to be alive and exist, the meaning of life, what is existence, etc. I know I should read Nietzsche, Kierkegaard, Sartre, because they deal with these questions.
Now, I'm not sure if I should just jump in, reading Kierkegaard first, or if I should meme myself and read the greeks. Plato's and Aristotele's philosophy don't interest me very much, from what I've read about them. And if I go down that path, I feel like I'll be spending years and years reading several philosophers that I just don't feel interested at all, just so I can have a philosophy knowledge to read the ones I actually want to. So:
Should I just skip everything, and read Kierkegaard? I've read a History of Philosophy book, which allowed me to understand at least the basics of several philosophers. I know a little about Hegel, Kant, etc.
Or should I at least give Plato and Aristotele a try? I do feel like they are important, otherwise they wouldn't be taught in universites 2000 years later. The thing is that I don't feel like reading several philosophers just to get where I want to. Would Aristoteles and Plato suffice? Are there other philosophers that greatly influenced the way existentialists think? Thanks in advance.

How vulnerable is the book industry? Should I feel bad about pirating books I already own? Or pirating at all?
Doesn't matter.
>>9012150
I don't feel bad if the author is dead. I usually buy books from authors who are still alive.
>>9012160
this pretty much. Before all the books were online and when online was dial up, people used just steal shit from the library, which fucked up everyone's shit far more.
