what are philosophical works that require you to have read nietzsche to understand them?
8 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>9209606
None really since Nietzsche is a hack and his influences are easily comprehensible on the fly
>>
>>9209606
On the other hand, every philosopher, psychological and social writer, that comes after Nietzsche of any value. Adorno, Freud, Weber, as instances of each class. Protestant theologians, as well: Tillich, Bonhoeffer, as two instances.

6 posts and 1 images submitted.

As easy.. as it is to come up with, and actually write, something satisfactory.
>>
>>9209558

No, it's much harder than that.
>>

Thinking up a book is hard as hell.
Writing it is fairly easy.
Publishing one is a motherfucker.

Nice picture. What about this terribly lonely master, exactly. The poetry's actually pretty good. Typee Redburn Moby Dick are the novels to read. Pierre is schlock but weirdly fun. Mardi I find unreadable. White Jacket and Omoo.. I always forget about them when making lists like this, but theyre good too. The four major shorts (I include the Encantadas) are fantastic, major monuments of American Lit along with the doctor. Anything else? Confidence Man, perhaps?

I don't know why Kafka gets such praise when Melville already finished his lifes work in a short story

Why aren't you writing a pessimistic, nihilistic, anti-progress, anti-society, anti-sex, anti-women, pro-ascetic, pro-racism manifesto /lit/?

Because its not the 90's anymore. Post-modernism is done.
>>

You have to be 18 to post on this board, by the way.
>>
>>9213256
It's not even a question of age, if you can't adapt to your environment you are fated to die. Post-modernism has been done to death at this point. I'm sure you have no problem reading the same basic ideas regurgitated by yet another special snowflake that didn't submit to the system and everyone else just doesn't get me, maaaan.

Start with the myths, I highly recommend Prometehus Bound.

It's an ancient play, one of the oldest we have, about a simple man who was horrifically punished by the powers that be for the terrible crime of trying to bring light to the common people.

In the words of Aeschylus, "No good deed goes unpunished".

Why does everyone want to adapt this book to film and always fail miserably?

>I am worthless nothing but for some reason I dont feel as such when I call things that are far from worthless nothing worthless nothing, and but so also too I read the books when I was young and noone had as genuine a relation to the material as me and my imagination and so any attempt by any number of geniuses would indubitably fall incredibly near incredulously short

Postwar European capitals. When I read about the Middle-Ages, The Renaissance, Enlightenment, Humanism, Science, the Greeks, the Romans and then think of the works of generations of thinkers, scholars, artists and politicians being broken, burned, blown up and blown away in such a short span of time I get a literal hard-on.

I think maybe that's why I like Beckett so much: not just because he's brilliant, witty, funny and benevolent, but because you can feel the strain, of centuries of learning and humanist thinking rubbing against cataclysm and the abyss.

How does my dear friend /lit/ cope with the horrific prospect that the majority of the population does not engage in the finer art that is literature?

It is such a shame, alas I say, that so many common folk are preoccupied with money, social status and consumption of lesser phenomena. While they spend their ordinary lives doing such things, I spend my time reading the classics, as well as mastering rhetoric, logic, reason and rational thinking.

Alas, while they believe in futile ideologies, religions and other fairy tales, I am reading philosophy, the sciences and high art. Yes, you got that right, by all means I am a skeptical atheist.

You might say, correctly, that I am a humanist, and you are not mistaken for I am. At times I do secretely think that perhaps the plebians should not be educated and that, dare I say, religion should subdue the masses.

That said, with populism at the backdoor of my beloved Europe I fear that democracy is failing and that Plato was right.

Does /lit/ understand this feeling? Of being alone in your pursuit of the higher gifts in life but surrounded by people who could not care less? Sometimes I weep, and in my anger I sometimes set aside my book, while I take the time to calm again and read on.

Lads I suffer from hypochondria/somatic symptom disorder (medicated for it). I'm considering CBT therapy. Although the cheaper route would be to get a book and try to do the therapy myself. I'm in a really bad spot going through hell this year. Any of you ever try to help yourself by reading a book or should I just go to therapy. Sorry if this isn't rhetoric right place for this question. Please don't ban me.
