Why do you write?
Serious question, why?
It seems like a lot of effort spent on the medium that lost its potency long time ago. Poetry is dead, philosophy is retarded, fiction is done better in film and videogames, and your life wasn't interesting enough for non-fiction autobiography. You have nothing meaningful or important to say. Whether your goal is vanity or genuine artistic achievement, nobody will ever give a shit about your scribbles. And don't try that 'I write for myself' bullshit, you know it's just an excuse.
Isn't it about time you faced reality?

I'm new, as you would have figured out by reading on anyway. I want to start getting into literature and I want to set goals for myself. Post lit infographics, if you have top of genre/year/etc post them too, especially if there's anything beginner related. Also post recommendations, I'd be glad to take them on. I've read some entry-level Shakespeare, some Kafka, and I have access to physical copies of almost any classic.

Also saying "Start with the Greeks" is synonymous with asking me to fuck your girlfriend.

Otto ("auto") is Gaddis's self-insert, right? Why the endless self-flagellation? Is it ironic or something?

haha ;)

there's actually a character later called William who is literally the stand in, think of all the characters as a sort of fragmented versions of wyatt

Otto is literally all of you. Every single one of you who has ever written anything down on paper and thought they could be a writer is otto.

Your library might be willing to purchase books if you request them. Lots of libraries have forms or webpages for such requests.

I find it tiresome, but I am in the minority here. This isn't Gogol's only work. He has a good play, some fine shorts, and writes a mean essay.

I'm about 100 pages into it at the moment. Some funny stuff but a little repetitive so far.

Is a friend who recommends 1Q84, with the motivation being "[it's] the best book I have read", a friend worth having?

(Or are differing tastes in art/ literature not legitimate reasons for breaking up one's friendship with someone?)

Also, would you recommend me reading 1Q84? *I haven't read anything by Murakami

It's literary anime.

Compare the way they speak and act to a typical anime character. You cannot refute me.

>literary anime

It's funny you mention that... I actually kind of thought the same! The things the taxi driver is talking about in the first chapter about "reality" and whatnot, and the mood of the situation felt a bit anime(-y?).

In those golden times when repressed individuas turned their head toward literature as this was
only thing that give them hope, they often gathered in gardens or in caffes and they spend days debating art, philosophy, religion, politics. Those discussions gave them fresh, distanced look, after they taked this mental deep breath they could drown in solitude again with a book, or blank page waiting to be filled. Do you think that /lit/ is our age's garden or cafe for intellectual ellite?
