THERE are seven keys to the great gate,
Being eight in one and one in eight.
First, let the body of thee be still,
Bound by the cerements of will,
Corpse-rigid; thus thou mayst abort
The fidget-babes that tease the thought.
Next, let the breath-rhythm be low,
Easy, regular, and slow;
So that thy being be in tune
With the great sea's Pacific swoon.
Third, let thy life be pure and calm,
Swayed softly as a windless palm.
Fourth, let the will-to-live be bound
To the one love of the profound.
Fifth, let the thought, divinely free
From sense, observe its entity.
Watch every thought that springs; enhance
Hour after hour thy vigilance!
Intense and keen, turned inward, miss
No atom of analysis!
Sixth, on one thought securely pinned
Still every whisper of the wind!
So like a flame straight and unstirred
Burn up thy being in one word!
Next, still that ecstasy, prolong
Thy meditation steep and strong,
Slaying even God, should He distract
Thy attention from the chosen act!
Last, all these things in one o'erpowered,
Time that the midnight blossom flowered!
The oneness is. Yet even in this,
My son, thou shall not do amiss
If thou restrain the expression, shoot
Thy glance to rapture's darkling root,
Discarding name, form, sight, and stress
Even of this high consciousness;
Pierce to the heart! I leave thee here:
Thou art the Master. I revere
Thy radiance that rolls afar,
O Brother of the Silver Star!

The curse of my curses
Seven days every day
And seven dry Thursdays
On you, Barney Kiernan,
Has no sup of water
To cool my courage,
And my guts red roaring
After Lowry's lights.

Why does he do it, /lit/? Why does he refuse to use a thesaurus to find synonyms for "squat"? Why do all his characters have to spit once every three pages? Why doesn't he know that there are foods people eat that aren't tortillas and beans? He has to be aware of how repetitive he's being, right?

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2017/apr/13/ai-programs-exhibit-racist-and-sexist-biases-research-reveals

>as machines are getting closer to acquiring human-like language abilities, they are also absorbing the deeply ingrained biases concealed within the patterns of language use

>The latest paper shows that some more troubling implicit biases seen in human psychology experiments are also readily acquired by algorithms. The words “female” and “woman” were more closely associated with arts and humanities occupations and with the home, while “male” and “man” were closer to maths and engineering professions.

>And the AI system was more likely to associate European American names with pleasant words such as “gift” or “happy”, while African American names were more commonly associated with unpleasant words.

What are the implications of this on Land's "All meatbags will be obliterated by AI" thesis?

>>
Why would the ai associate black names with negatives? Is it reading new articles about all the Da'kwons and Terrels involved in robbery and murder?
>>
>>9376896
This serves more to show how racist / sexist / classist the world still is at large, these machines are very clearly way before the point of being able to make actual value judgements.

How many pages do you read on daily basis? Is 50 enough to stay lit?
21 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>9376562

10 on a good day
>>
>>9376562
Page count is irrelevant. It's time spent reading that matters. To be /lit/ you need to read an average of three or more hours daily.
>>
>>9376562
Depends what your reading. Your going to read more pages of Harry potter than Kant in the same amount of time.
You could read a half page of poetry all day.

Good literature of the Spanish Civil War by Spanish or non-Anglo authors?

Fiction or non fiction?
I'm Spanish myself and Orwell's account is easily the most engaging I've read desu (which to be fair is not that many). He was an amazing journalist

Also, check out the Spanish film La Vaquilla if you haven't already

Can I smell your hair?

How come Harold Bloom has read the whole canon multiple times, yet hasn't produced any poetry or writing of his own? He teaches literature, he knows what has and probably what hasn't been done, he knows what artists are truly unique. Do you think that he literally just lacks creative talent, and only has the ability to speak matter of fact about the literature which he reads? His whole career seems to be the byproduct of the fact that he is just an incredibly fast reader, and by consequence has become an expert who can easily engage in the topic (much like people who play video games converse about video games. Although video games don't take any intelligence, at least, a dim and insignificant amount compared to reading).

He's just an academic gate-keeper, his own "criticism" is mostly Freudian bullshit. He never says anything insightful about anything and he never takes the chances to actually judge works in relation to another. A creative artist may not have half the encyclopedic knowledge that Bloom has, but would have a much deeper understanding of what he did read.
>>
>>9375990
literally, no discernible talent lmao
>>
Harold obviously bullshits about his reading speed. I heard that he claimed to read 500 pages per hour. That's 30 words per second, literally impossible.

I'm at a point in my life where I find myself thinking much more about my purpose, my existance, and what I want in life. I am not a religious person, and I've never studied philosophy or spirituality, so I often find myself lost, ending up disheartened or pessimistic if i dwell on these topics for too long. What books could /lit/ recommend that would expand my mind and have an impact on the way I think about these subjects?

Does morality exist?
71 posts and 11 images submitted.
>>
Short answer: Morality is suicide.

Long answer: No, because the myth of "objective morality" has changed throughout history. Slavery and maiming your children have all been moral at one point in history. Subjective morality, however, also does not exist.
What people think they have for morals are just a matter of perspective.

If someone's morals are to kill gay people because their religion told them to, and you try to interfere, then you are technically the bad guy.
>>
Yes, at least for us. A snake might not consider the moral implications of attacking a mouse, but it's important for us humans, because our brains have developed to become rational and emotional.

Murder can be rationalized, but something still tells you it's wrong. That's the part of your brain that has evolved to 'feel's, empathize. I think that ethics is such a confusing subject because logic cannot be applied to solve the problems it presents. Ethics require warm emotion, not cold rationality.

How can we determine what is the right thing to do in every circumstance? Is there a general principle? I think thats too difficult a question, but one thing is certain, morality exists, even in a godless world.
>>
>>9375525
A continuation:

What is considered moral may change, but one thing is certain. Even if we don't know what is the right thing to do, the right thing to do definitely exists.
