What am I in for? Never read Eco, what's the general consensus? And did you like it?

You know, I'm starting to think no one on lit has read this.

bump. it's something ive been wanting to read as well.
It's great, you should have a decent knowledge of European occult history, or at least e prepared to do some research as you read. I think Eco once claimed to have created Dan Brown, this book shows how
It's meh unless you like heavy parodies - there are other things to read that are far more worthy of your time

Oh yeah, I've been interested in occulticism for a while now, it's why I'm reading it.
Absolutely amazing, one of my favorite books. It's the most erudite conspiracy book there is, if you're into knowledge for knowledge's sake it will blow your mind.

is there a guide somewhere out there?
ever since i watched eyes wide shut ive been wanting to read more about cults and secret societies.
It's a fun book, some great debunking of occultism. (But the occult societies still sound interesting even after you're told that they're full of charlatans, madmen and idiots)

Wiki is actually a decent source, just start at the theosophy page and go from there, you'll end up with the rosenkreuzians, which might be the ones most relevant to FP with regards to how it all started from a likely prank/shitpost. Observe /Pol/s kek worship for a current parallel (there's actually a blog about the cult of kek with some interesting observations). Similar to the Prague cemetery, Eco uses his novels to show how our world is shaped by language and misunderstandings and how a late medieval shitpost ends up with people killing each other in cults 600 years later. On my phone so apologies for poor writing

Truly great works transcend barriers of language. Is the /lit/ obsession with language secretly an excuse for not reading these works?
Try reading every piece of the western canon in its original language before preaching, or just shut the fuck up.

Yes, i like it better than Name of the Rose
I worked at a vanity publisher and Eco was fucking on point.

This. I want everyone who have read the Dan Brown books to read this one.
Eco dismounts completely the seriousness of the conspiracy theories while at the same time showing the dangers of taking them too seriously.
I love how in the book the librarians basically created their own monster
