Nothing.

You keep spare parts on hand and replace parts only if they actually break.

I dont know why these are even a thing. Every gunsmith I've ever talked to says to remove them, the rifle actually functions better without them.

None, just clean and lubricate the gun normally. Parts typically fail with neglect and abuse or poor quality from the start.

I purchased a bow recently and plan to spend the next few months practicing with it so I'm ready to hunt when the cooler weather hits.

I've only got a 45lb bow, but I'm thinking that will be sufficient for boars. What weight arrow should I be looking at?

Also, I'm planning on stalking. Shooting from a blind doesn't interest me. Any recommendations on books that will help me understanding tracks and signs? I'm Australian, but books for tracking in other countries should be fine right?

Lastly, what's the best way to understand animal anatomy for hunting? I'm starting off with pigs but I'm going after deer when I get the chance

(Disclaimer: I shoot compound and also don't hunt pigs)

I'd be leery of hunting pigs with a 45# trad bow (which I'm assuming your's is). Shot placement on pigs is different to deer and on bigger pigs with a "shield" is much less forgiving - you'll either need a bow and arrow set up to deliver enough momentum to punch through or take quartering away shots.

If your bow is a trad bow, you'll need to get very close to make those shots (especially as a new archer), which, with pigs, opens you up to getting charged. My brother knows a bunch of guys who bow hunt pigs and apparently it's not unusual to go out in pairs - one with a bow, one with a rifle for stopping if things go south.

If you're set on hunting pigs with a 45# trad bow, I'd go heavy arrows, definitely upwards of 500 grains. Might even be a good idea to go full Ashby on this one, building an arrow with 19%+ FOC with a heavy single-bevel two blade broad head. I'd get a small diameter shaft in something like a 400, 340 or 300 and add point weight until it spines out well for your bow.
>>
>>28318142
>>28318142
Cheers mate. I own a compound.

I'm aware of the boar shield and have done a little research on the internals of a pig.

And yeah. I've been charged by a boar before. Though I'd be brave and stand my ground. He was about 6 inches from the tip of my gun when I squeezed one off - click. In the excitement the bolt had lifted slightly. But the barrel to his face, and then to his ribs when he had been shot scared him off. Definitely not gonna take the 220 swift out for pigs again. It's only a little projectile haha.

Being Australian I cannot bring a pistol with me for a back up weapon. I'm trying to decide between a knife and a small hatchet as personal protection for any future charging boars.
>>
>>28318378
45# is kind of an odd weight for a hunting compound, which is why I assumed trad. What bow have you got? (Also, what's its max peak weight/range of adjustment/IBO speed/your draw length?)

The same principles apply building an arrow for penetration with a compound, but depending on your bow you'll need a stiffer spined arrow than a trad bow so you'll either need more spine or less point weight, which can make getting a higher FOC a bit trickier. Unless your 45# compound is goddamn fast though, I'd be a bit hesitant to take it after pigs to be honest.

Speaking from a position of ignorance, I'd probably take a mate with a gun over a knife or a hatchet.

Hey /k/,
I spend large amounts of time out innawoods (pic related), by myself, and usually travel far distances from civilization. After reading recent reports of mountain lion sightings, it dawned on me that I really need to protect myself. I don't not think I'm being overly paranoid, but when you're out alone you're exposing yourself to all kinds of risks, and I think it best to be adequately protected. I would by no means say that I'm a very large person, "Russian tanker" size would describe me best, so I certainly don't think I could win a fight with a lion, a bear, or any large predator for that matter.

I don't know shit when it comes to handguns, but my question is what gun is lightweight, low maintenance, but still packs a punch? I would most likely be using a shoulder holster as I almost always use some form of pack and utilizing hip straps is a must, not that this should effect the firearm in anyway.
I'm open to any suggestions, but preferably nothing too expensive.

Thanks /k/

Your size doesn't matter. A grizzly will kill a 6'5 bodybuilder just as dead as a 4 foot tall girlscout. The only difference is that the bodybuilder will be a larger, more hearty meal. Unless you can kill the bear by sticking your arm down its throat, which was a one time thing to be fair.

>Lightweight, low maintenance, packs a bunch
A big suggestion in Alaska and for hiking in general is either a rifle chambered in 30-06 or higher or a handgun such as a 44 magnum. Sure, a .40 might kill a moose just as dead, but let's assume you won't have much time to dump a magazine into a grizzly when it's charging you.

If you don't mind carrying with a strap, an AK pistol still keeps almost as much energy as a full sized rifle, but is a bit more difficult to aim and control. You could put a sig brace on it or something. I doubt the bear would call the ATF, not that I'm suggesting you ever shoulder it, that would be illegal anon. :^)

So best options are:
300WM (or 30-06) rifle probably strapped over back
44 magnum carried how you please
AK pistol carried how you please
>>
>>28317716
Also, for mountain lions, bears, whatever, the best option is being able to identify fresh bear tracks, using common sense, and keeping your distance. No running from bears, they can outrun you. Don't climb a tree unless you can basically do a 30ft vertical leap. Stand your ground, because most bear charges are bluffs. For mountain lions, don't run, raise your voice loud and low, and get ready to shoot it. Be aware of fresh tracks, and don't have food or any sort of smell that might attract either species.
>>
>>28317650
Don't worry about mountain lions. They know where you are long before you will know they are around. They almost always avoid people, and if it wants you dead it will ambush you. You won't have a chance to pull a gun.

By most common I mean:
>most common/accessible parts
>most common/accessible ammunition
>under 1000 dollars

Basically a gun that most people would have the ammo for and spare parts for. And vise versa, in case someone else needed something. I don't want to find myself in a situation where I run out of ammo, and no one has anything compatible.

It doesn't really get mentioned much, but Blood Diamond is solid. Bullets kill people like they should and nobody survives just because they are a main character.
Its nice too because it doesn't try make whites out to be the big villains of Africa, instead choosing to reflect the reality that both the totally-not-Exectutive-Outcomes and the rebel warlords are both equally profiting from the suffering and unrest. That shouldn't be unusual in films, but it is.
Also, its got a sick Car-15.
