Can someone give advice for someone just plain untalented? My drawing are just a result of work and nothing else and I can't get past my comfort zone. I have been drawing maybe for a year now and I can't at all compare to other artists here who have been drawing for the same time.

Do you draw a circle in clockwise or anticlockwise direction?

Do you draw a horizontal lines left to right or right to left?

Do you draw a vertical line up to down or down to up?

Right handed or left handed? And do you have a normal grip?

Usually but not always:
1)clockwise
2)left to right
3)top to bottom
Right handed. I hold the pencil a bit weirdly I think though, like if you gently touch all the tips of your fingers together to a point that's sorta how I hold it.
>>
>>2308379
I used to not care but then I realized that I obvious had to take advantage of the coriolis force effect to improve my circle. So now I draw my circles in the same direction that water flow down a drain, which depends on if I'm north or south of equator.

The further near the poles I am the more forceful my circles become, to the point where I can almost not contain them within a single sheet of paper. Amazing stuff.
>>
>>2308379
Clockwise.
Left to right.
Right handed.
Still relying too much on the writing grip, but trying to force myself not to.

should you spend a lot of time measuring or should you train your eye to draw everything perfectly without it?

No rules only tools. You need to use what ever works best for you to get the job done.

Use your eyes. Art is not about mechanical copying.

you can't measure unconciously if you've not done it a lot of hours while feeling pain

I've been invited to the local Comic Con near me as an artist with a booth. I'm trying to get my name out there so I'd like to print some of my art into 3 different sizes the biggest being 16x20 and hand them out for free to people who'd like them.

How do I go about starting this? I have a month left until the convention. What printers should I look into buy and what is the average cost of them? I would go to the local FedEx Office store and ask them to print a couple batches but 5 of the 10 pieces I'd like to print are somewhat NSFW pinups, so I don't think they'd like that. Thanks in advance.

Also, what kind of paper should I use? I'm assuming a glossy.
>>
Bumping this, I'm curious about making prints/ getting them made. Sorry I'm of no help, OP. If anyone has an opinion on scanning vs dslr photo of large oil paintings for prints, I'd like to hear it.

Also, I don't think you should worry about the nsfw stuff. Their job is to copy/print, not to judge.

>>2307116
Aside from them giving me the stink eye, if I was printing 1 of the images with is topless and a customer in the store saw it I'm sure they'd raise a stink.

want to be commercial artist

>do 'good' work. work that has elements of subtlety, aspires to be technically proficient, displays skillful use of art foundation principles, tries to avoid mainstream elements, tries to bring some tastefulness to usually cliche and overdone subject matters

make about 2k a year working my absolute ass off, sending millions of emails, replying to thousands of job posts, contacting hundreds of people (ad's amongst those)

>do commercial garbage type work and very low effort porn. treat it like a business making very coldly calculated decisions and moves, completely detaching my ego and person from the work and hiding behind an alias. not caring too much about how i treat fans/clients, treating them and the work as very disposable. doing quantity over quality (to an extreme degree)

Make about 900$ a month CONTINOUSLY without working too hard (6 days a week, 9 hours per day. this is not-too-hard by artist standards, not by real-job standards). popularity snowballs rapidly, can increase comission prices regularly, clients incredibly grateful for me taking their comission, incredibly patient with me when i take about 2 months to finish it, never ask for revisions, always reply like 'wow amazing thank you WOW I LOVE IT' even when it's total trash.

What do i have to do in order to keep the fire burning /ic/ ? I'm so freaking close to jumping into commercial garbage as a full time career. It's incredibly depressing to see high aspirations so utterly unrewarded.

i now got a dayjob in which i make around 1300$ working 3 shifts per week. i have the freedom to do what i want with my remaining time. i either make MORE money, and snowball my commercial-garbage business further, or i keep working on/studying for my more upscale/serious/respectable work but by this point that feels like a waste of time.

fuck this is depressing. it's like you want to be the next kurosawa but people throw money at you the moment you start shooting amateur gonzo porn

well, similar situation here.
painting and illustrations did not cut it for me. Never found inhouse jobs and freelance is shit.

Went full media graphic design. Easy tasks (from an illustrators standpoint) The only really challange thing is comming up with good ideas at times. It pays well and I have somewhat fun doing it.

I paint in my freetime... but not that much anymore really.

I know what you mean. Got serious about getting good around 4 years ago, watching Feng and Gnomon tutorials, doing pleb-tier ebin scifi and fantasy. Now this generic commercial stuff makes me incredibly bored and depressed. I haven't even made any money off of it, it just killed my enjoyment of the genre and my enjoyment of painting. Been focusing on figurative fine art instead, and just felt a calm wash over me doing it, but at the same time knowing I won't get any money doing that either.

Everything in the picture is pixelated/blurry as hell... you definitely want to work bigger. Besides that, the shape of the thing is just sort of lumpy overall. Are you using a reference?
>>

no references. But I agree I need to work bigger.

One more thing, how do I train creativity? I can practice drawing till my hands hurt but how do I train to think of new and interesting things?

Is it more important for people to browse and check your work in any way possible rather than focusing on getting good to the point people cared?
15 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Yes, if you want to make money doing this.

Check out this guy's Patreon intake vis-a-vis his skill level: https://www.patreon.com/markydaysaid?ty=h

That's how much more important marketing is than skill level. You don't actually have to be that great of an artist to make a good living doing it. Conversely, it's totally possible to be really good and still struggle if you don't market yourself well.

Also, you will probably never regard yourself as "good enough." That's a trap a lot of people fall into.
>>
>>2306333
If you want to sell yourself and your art as its own product, like what patreon artists do, then marketing is more important. If you want to work for clients, then skill is more important.

Is the painting going to collapse when it comes off the stretchers?

is it a meme to say you dont practice that much?

I ask really great artists how often they practice and they always say they never practice.

Its bullshit, r-right?
20 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
They might have different ideas of practice than they assumed you do. Any great artist does art either a lot or for a very long time. No exceptions.
>>
>>2305908
I'm a really great artist, I practiceD. But the skill remains no matter how long you fuck around. I take more time thinking about my ideas than actually creating them. (not gonna post my art because holy shit fuck you)
>>
To add on to what >>2305912 says, I think that a lot of pros don't "practice" the same way beginners do. Like people on /ic/ will do photo studies and copy out anatomy books and watch video lectures on colour and stuff. But once you reach a certain level you've already done those basic exercises for a number of years and know how light and anatomy work and how to paint and observe things. At that point those exercises are not as useful.

Personally I have basically stopped doing studies the last year or two. I'll still do them on rare occasions, but honestly if I have time to paint for myself and not a client I would rather spend it doing creative work than a study. And with the creative work I can still learn--I'll focus on other aspects of art though like composition or storytelling or design. Of course using reference will still teach me things too if I run into a problem. If I find I need to learn about, say, materials, then I don't need to paint a study of it, I can simply google it and look at various images and then go into my painting and apply that in the area I was struggling with. Same for any other aspect of art, same with master paintings, most of the time I don't think it is necessary for me to actually copy it out. I'm at a point where I can study it through just observing and analyzing it carefully with my eyes.

Also I think certain exercises are kind of stupid to grind at, like spending an hour drawing circles and stuff. It's better to get good at drawing ellipses by using them in an actual drawing. So do some vehicles and draw the wheels out. You'll get more mileage and experience that way than drawing pages of ellipses. Maybe at first they won't be great, but it adds up and it is a better way to learn I think.

So I paint a lot but I don't "practice" a lot, if that makes sense.
