Catholics love to demonize the Borgias because it lets them deflect mentions of a less illustrious period in the history of the Mother Church. Just those filthy Spaniards defiling their fair institution, you see.

Cesare wasn't particularly violent by the standards of his age. He was admired by his contemporaries for his intelligence, good looks and princely demeanor. Machiavelli regarded him highly and it wasn't just because he had a crush on him.

Buddhism thread?

We need a more precise topic. To start with one what do buddhist think about atheism?
>>
>>68874
Some would argue that Buddhism IS a form of atheism. There's no divine god, just a man who attained enlightenment and was a Great Teacher to others

For me, what made me more than just casually interested, was the idea of impermanence and attachment, and how it causes dukkha, or suffering.

Why do public schools exist?

What is the source of this idea that everyone needs to learn what they teach you in school?
80 posts and 5 images submitted.
>>
So that the kids learn which ideas are fashionable and which are not by noticing the facial expression and tone of voice of their Teachers and school books. Their opinions on specific issues are formed as they view and read the "correct view of history" as taught by their teachers and elders so that they might become fit voters for the already designated candidates and politicians.

It's a much surer way of controlling governments when you brainwash the population from the very start and take their kids to your "correctional institutions"

The Enlightenment. The American and French Revolutions specifically.

Definitely the Bronze age. It must have been so cool to live at the beginning of history, back when people knew so little about the world and everything was mysterious. There were very few established rules and social mores compared to the medieval period. You could have multiple wives, get drunk, fuck an animal, hire a prostitute, etc and there were no philosophers yet to tell you that you were a degenerate. Plus everything was primitive so everything was easy: like you could just make a living making pots out of clay and that was all you had to do. War was too simple to kill too many people and if you lived in a walled city you were probably safe. Sounds like EZ-mode if you ask me!

They're whitewashed by history to make the Crusades look like violent and aggressive acts instead of the self-defense it truly was. Nor is the sheer barbarity of their invasions discussed what so ever as it's terribly politically incorrect and may upset someone's tummy.

Romania interests me a lot but there does not seem to be much written about its origins (In English at least). I really want to know how the Latin (and eventually Romance) language managed to hold out in that area once Rome withdrew.

Europe formed the concept of the nation state fairly early. Due to them being unified (in a way) it was easy for them to expand easily without too much internal conflicts.

/his/bollah, I was wondering, is Israel the actual jewish homeland? I am a jew who has never been to Israel, so I am a bit biased, but I have a few unanswered questions:
Do jews have a right to return?
Are the jews of Israel in the wrong? Or are they occupying objectively Arab land?
Was the 1947 partition plan a fair division?
Was the six-day war justified?

do have the right to return
>>

lmao
Do Americans of European descent have the right to "return" to Europe wiping out the current population?
>>
>>67606
>/his/bollah, I was wondering, is Israel the actual jewish homeland?
Jews and Palestinians are related, the Palestinians are basically the Jews who never went into diaspora and converted to Islam and were assimilated into the larger Arab polity. Is it the actual homeland of the Jews? Homelands are decided by the ability to hold them really, there is no such thing as a homeland if you cannot hold it. So it is what the Jews say it is if they can make it so.

>Do jews have a right to return?
Legally, yes. Morally? I think that depends upon circumstances.

>Are the jews of Israel in the wrong? Or are they occupying objectively Arab land?
The land is not objectively Arab, similarly it is not objectively Jewish or Israeli. I don't think wrongness is really useful here.

>Was the 1947 partition plan a fair division?
Based on population it should have been a smaller Jewish state.

>Was the six-day war justified?
From an Arab perspective it was justified. From an Israeli one it was not. Objectively justified wars are rare.

What do you guys think about this guy? Just started listening and it's nice, but is it accurate?
57 posts and 8 images submitted.
>>
>>67567
There are answers on this by various historians online. The general consensus is that he's entertaining and mostly accurate but he's not the one you want to turn to if you want in-depth knowledge about the subject. He's a good entry-point for history enthusiasts and generally interesting to listen to. That said, I just bought The Fall of the Republic from his site and I'm enjoying it so far.
>>
>>67567
He's great. He brings a lot of passion to the table and is pretty entertaining. He also draws good conclusions and is pretty accurate for an amateur historian (which fortunately, he seems to have the humility to never forget he is).
>>
>>67567
he cites his sources a lot, and reads many straight quotes. He will mention if he was forced to rely on only a few sources in a section (because of language or other constraints). HE often mentions what biases his source might be bringing to the narrative (such as Chruchill's account of the Gallipoli doonbogle is somewhat damage control)
Except for some of his analogies, I can't see where you could fault his accuracy very much.
Never believe anyone entirely, always double check what someone says.
