Are there any other historical figures who turned out to be drug addicts?
12 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>72669

Addiction is not real, many historical figures used drugs we now consider "addictive" but simply did not have the culture of helplessness to justify their character weakness as a disease.

Sigmund Freud liked cocaine. Winston Churchill was an alky. That's all i can think of off the top of my head.

Was the shit he took really considerd as a drug at this time? Because i doubt this.
its like people look back at someone from our time and say: He smoked. he was a drug addict

Is he the greatest general in human history? Are the stories about him more legend than history?

>Is he the greatest general in human history?

I'm not even sure I'd rate him top 5.

I mean, you have either Genghis Khan or Subotai, depending on which one you credit as the real geinus behind the Mongolian conquests, you've got Napoleon, you've got Alexander, you've got guys like Guo Ziyi and Khalid Ibn Al-Walid. Do you think Hannibal is better than any of them?

>Are the stories about him more legend than history?

Probably in regards to the ones about his personality, quotes, and habits. His decisive victories in the Second Punic war are pretty well established though.
>>
>>72338
>Is he the greatest general in human history?
No, he couldn't even take Rome. I would personally probably say Belisarius was the greatest in history simply because he conquered Italy and North Africa as well as frequently defeating the Persians and Bulgars despite often having too few soldiers.

Let's discuss one of the most interesting countries on the African continent. What do you know about Ethiopian history?

Some starters:

>Is one of the oldest Christian countries, having adopted it in the 4th century
>One of the only nations in Africa to resist colonialisation
>Only country in Africa with its own unique alphabet
>First country to cultivate coffee
>Is apparently the final resting place for the biblical Ark of the Covenant.

Let's talk about overrated generals. Why and how did they capture the attention of the pop history crowd despite their copious lack of success.

Pic related is most famous for a campaign that he lost as many battles as he won, defied his orders, wasted a shit ton of his supplies on attacks that went nowhere, and ultimately failed in every single one of its strategic aims.

Yes he's lauded as a general almost without peer, despite being a walking embodiment of the Peter Principle.

Who is your favorite overrated general?

Allied generals that win through superior numbers & supplies?
>>
>>71899

As opposed to generals who were actually good at their jobs. Guys like Kesselring, or Manstein if you want to stick to WW2 Germans.
>>
>>71881
>Yes he's lauded as a general almost without peer, despite being a walking embodiment of the Peter Principle.

I think him turning into a secular saint is based on
* The importance of Egypt (Suez Canal) to the British war effort,
* His involvement in the plot against Hitler, but most importantly
* Rommel wasn't involved in the Eastern Front, and so never got tainted by atrocities committed there

Templars were the ultimate shit-tier, that's a fact.

They were fucking bastards, sodomites, failed every military action they tried, and at the end of their reign, they became merchants obsessed with earning gold.
They were such fucking cunts that they even refused to pay the ransom of Saint-Louis, King of France, who was the only King of Europe who still waged a crusade in the Holy Lands.

They deserved being put to the torch by Philippe le Bel.

Hospitallers are cool though.

Based of the amphitheater density I would say France and England (together with Tunisia) were the most important parts of the Empire?

Is this wrong?

Western Europe was of very little importance to Rome apart from parts of Spain which were heavily urbanised or gold rich, and parts of Gaul near the frontier and the main roads. Britain wasn't very important at all and Italy less so as time marched on. The most important parts of the Roman world were western Anatolia and Constantinople, the province of Africa, Egypt and Syria.
>>

>>
>>71799
Following up. The reason more amphitheatres have been excavated from western Europe is because modern day western Europe is rich as fuck and can afford to generously provide for museums and universities to dig shit up. Places like Libya and Iraq, despite sitting on a goldmine of antiquities have barely unearthed many of their greatest treasures.

How effect was America's foreign policy during the Cold War. Specifically was it a mistake to support many third world dictators who would fight "Communism" and ally with the United States at the expense of causing many populations to resent the United States.

In the Cold War, it was worth the anti-American sentiment in the region, as the Soviet Union was always the bigger problem. Now, we're still feeling the long term repercussions. Ultimately, no, we didn't really have a choice when the USSR did the same thing elsewhere.

>Specifically was it a mistake to support many third world dictators who would fight "Communism" and ally with the United States at the expense of causing many populations to resent the United States

You have to ask two questions:
1. To what extent are you willing to go to fight Communism?

JFK and Reagan were willing to watch the world burn in a end-game nuclear exchange. That's obviously excessive and self-defeating.
If, like the second of the men mentioned above, you're willing to train and fund death squads to kill nuns and priests preaching liberation theology in El Salvador, fine, that's far less excessive. But I'm still inclined to question your moral fiber.

2. To what extent was the US's efforts in the Cold War related to fighting Communism?

The War on Indochina is a clear case of that in fact not being the case. The declared intentions (internally, at least) were to stamp down the Third-World nationalist movements which were becoming a danger to the economic privileges of the West. Kissinger, who was the mastermind behind much of the destruction taking place in that part of the world, was no ideologue. He didn't fear Communism per-se, he feared whatever threatened the American hegemony to which he was wedded.
If you are to consider that, you may well come to the conclusion the "Red Threat" had very little to do with the White House's power plays.
>>
>>72233
Yeah, I guess a part of my question was related to >>72523 where it wasn't always about fighting communist as it was about keeping economic privileges for the United States.

>>72523
Do you think the US foriegn policy has cost or helped the United States economy in the long run.

So Protestants don't think Mary is the Mother of God:

But isn't that implicit Nestorianism? I don't see how it couldn't be. Could a Protestant explain to me how that isn't Nestorianism?

You can post whatever you want. I'm Orthodox, but the art I posted in the OP isn't. The Orthodox Church prohibits realism in art as its modernist (not in art in general, I just mean in Church sponsored art and art used for religious devotion at home).

What lead to Greek mythology being the most influential and having such a long standing interest? Of course other mythologies such as Norse have had a recent revival, but none have yet to captivate the interests such as the greek ones. Also Poseidon best god
