Could the Romans have stopped the Mongol Empire in its tracks?
>>293469
They could barely manage the Huns, and the Mongols were leagues ahead of the Huns in leadership, strategy and technology.
>>293469
No.
They (Byzantines?) couldn't even stop the Huns and eventually realized horse archery is King.
they did didnt they?
ie Byzantium
Why are people afraid to admit Hitler was a socialist?
>guaranteed employment
>national healthcare
>organized labor
>welfare systems
>collective ownership of industry
>nazi literally stands for "national socialist"
Were his social policies really that far overshadowed by nationalism and traditionalist rhetoric that to call him a socialist is invalid?
Or is he just a boogeyman?
Is he really so taboo to associate with socialism when other social/communist/marx derivative systems like Soviet Russia or China killed so many more through actual policy?

Oh, don't mind me anon, I'm just here to ruin everything for everyone.
Due process of law? Phshh. Sounds like something a counter revolutionary would say!
>be moderate
>advocate against the execution of royal women with no political power
>be the only one of the Committee of Public Safety with the balls to recall Carrier and want him put on trial for his barbarity in the Nantes
>support a provisional law during a time of both civil war and war with pretty much all of Europe that makes it easier to imprison people for suspected counter-revolutionary activity since, y'know, counter-revolutionary activity threatens the stability of the republic
>go down in history as an eeeevil dictator monster because living enemies get to rewrite history
sucks, man
>>293334
>we can only achieve stability by killing thousands of our own people

>Talk about the rights of the people
>Suspend the rights because if we grant them, people might misuse them!
I'm glad Robespierre died screaming. I only wish he could have experienced the terror and pain of every execution his law made possible, where innocent people went to their death because "muh republic can't stand dissent!"

Will do, bro.
Get that eye checked out.
For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven:
2
a time to be born, and a time to die;
a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;
3
a time to kill, and a time to heal;
a time to break down, and a time to build up;
4
a time to weep, and a time to laugh;
a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
5
a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together;
a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
6
a time to seek, and a time to lose;
a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
7
a time to tear, and a time to sew;
a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
8
a time to love, and a time to hate;
a time for war, and a time for peace.

It's an easy way to build large monumental architecture with hand tools.
>>293203
Pyramids look neat. They're also relatively symmetrical and easy to understand building wise.
Take one level, build it, then take a smaller sized level and put it on top of it.
>>293203
It's a very simple geometric structure
Tell me about the 30 Years War.
Why did 8 million people die just because three faggots got thrown out a window?
>>293179
1. Some princes wanted to stay Catholic, some wanted to be Protestant. Whichever would let them hold onto their titles
2. People were in fear that their after life was at stake
3. It evolved into a civil war
And into a dung heap. That's an important part.
It's complicated.

But they did, as you can see from this chart.
>>293150
>its a graph, so it must be true!
1: There are a bunch of tribes living in an area, each one governing itself that squabble for power
2: One of these tribes (for simplicity sake your tribe) gains a slight advantage in administration, war fighting ability, a good alliance, the misfortune of others or some combination there of manages to conquer one of it's rivals and make them vassals
3: Now that you have a vassal you can use them to fund the creation of larger, better armies and so the conquest of a third tribe gets easier and so on for a bit, putting your loyal supporters and exceptional warriors in charge of new provinces to rule them as their little sub-dynasties, thus a kingdom is born.
4: Eventually your kingdoms hit a wall due to complications in regards to communication, rebellious vassal lords who want to make their provinces into either independent kingdoms or take over, costs of maintaining garrisons, run into or simply run out of land to conquer and expansion stops.
5: Time goes by, technology advances and language becomes more uniform across your kingdom.
cont...
>>293049
6: Eventually your kingdom becomes unstable due to the population becoming more politically involved and ideologies based on ideas of the equality of all human beings comes up threatening your precious feudal oligarchy.
7: Have a bunch of hack writer declare that the people of your specific land are not "the subjects of your throne" but "the People of your country" and that they have with them a distinct history (leaving aside that most of it was being illiterate peasants bossed around by thuggish warriors and nobles) and many proud accomplishments (even if up until 200 years ago you were considered the most ass backwards collections of morons on the continent) along with how they posses a "inherent spirit of nobility" and other such meaningless pap which needs to be defended against the foreign hordes and their 'corrupting influences'.
8: Reap the benefits of this contrived nonsense as it keeps the proles in line
Pictured in OP: Something which is of no concern in constructing your ethnic national identity.

All ethnicities are invented. 60% of France could not speak French in 1796, and 80% of Italy did not speak Italian.

Were bucklers used on the medieval battlefield? How?
>>292990
to push aside or deflect a pike so the swordsman can close with his blade
>>292990
Not really. They were more of a duelling or a self-defense piece of equipment. In most pitched field battles, you wanted some kind of two handed polearm as your primary melee weapon. Swords of any stripe tended to be more of a backup/sidearm sort of thing.
>>293005
Wouldn't you want a larger shield, then? So you can protect yourself easier or defend from arrows?
Why have the Slavs had such a hard time consolidating democracy? Non-slavic post soviet states like the baltics have become true democracies, but russia, Ukraine, Belarus et al all are corrupt to the teeth
>>292976
This video offers a pretty good explanation of Russia's failure to utilize democracy, although it doesn't mention other slavs.
