Since free will doesn't exist and everyone just acts based on their environment (including society) either no one or all of society goes to prison.

I don't think cockroaches have free will, I still take anti-pest measures. Even if people have no free will, you should still take-anti crime measures.
>>

If there is no free will, then the people performing unjust punishment in the name of justice are ALSO blameless and have no agency to change their actions.
>>
Just because you can't be blamed for your actions doesn't mean the actions you did are acceptable. Jailing is a purely practical concept to remove personality traits that negatively impact society.

Am I fucking stupid for wanting to major in philosophy?
42 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Do you come from a wealthy family that can support you for the rest of your life?
>>
Dont worry, i dropped out of E.E. to economics so you're not the dumbest person.
>>
You should probably major in something else and continue to take classes unless you very confident you can get a job. The most likely job is to get a class teaching philosophy which itself is highly unlikely given how few philosopher teachers are needed. If you can get into a prestigious school or setting than you can start publishing papers in scholarly philosophical journals. The ultimate end is to produce your own books which go onto shape the field but that's very rare.

There is no reason why you can't learn philosophy and get a degree that more likely to earn you a living. You can even publish philosophical work without a degree provided the work is actually good. Many big name philosophers had no diploma, Kierkegaard being one of them. The point of the classes is to provide an accelerated approach to learning and to provide you with professor that can mentor you, the degree itself is meaningless.

Whats the deal with individualism and collectivism? Why have some countries like Russia been collectivist for so long while some Western European had more or less individualistic tendencies since years started counting up instead of down? Is this some sort of deep rooted cultural thing or does it have to do with economic/geographic conditions?

Paper somewhat related, it briefly touches the difference between Medieval English serfdom and nineteenth century Russian serfdom.

The general trend suggesting like so many other indicators it all comes down to economic development with the cream of cultural factors that influence it to a degree.

In this case the main importante is level of urbanization, as urban life shifts values towards individualism while rural life towards collective one.
>>
>>285134
Well western Europe between 0-1000 AD was quite rural yet they seem individualistic don't they? Everything from Ancient Germanics to Carolingian freemen
>>
Of course it's cultural.

Is racism simply the normal human condition?
Don't all normal people have at least some small preference when it comes to ethnic groups?
155 posts and 18 images submitted.
>>
>Is racism simply the normal human condition?

No.

>Don't all normal people have at least some small preference when it comes to ethnic groups?

Yes, but that's not racism. Racism clearly means holding people of other ethnicities to a different standard than your own ethnic group, or being directly hostile against other ethnic groups.
>>
Babies are born 'racist'. The reason 'racism' exists is for the same reason that we care about our family: because we recognize more of ourself (or genes) in them than others.

To have no concept of race loyalty is unnatural, one needs to be indoctrinated to have this evolutionary wisdom supressed.

What does /his/ think about The Story of Civilization?
25 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
I love Will Durant's style and even though a lot of the material is dated it's still just such a fun read. Just going back and rereading the first book, how he lays out what civilization is and how we got there just enthralls me all over again.
>>
>Eurocentrism
>>
I read Caesar and Christ, it did a great job of telling the material in a more narrative driven form, which made it easier for me to read when I was young. It's a good introduction into history for people who want to read more ancient history, yet are put off by the dryness of historical works at times.

Has Communism ever worked? If not, who came the closest to success?

>>284725

The global market doesn't allow for a democratic communist nation to exist.

All attempts at communism so far have never tried to evolve into the end game:

Socialism.

So no, never. Don't know who came closest. China, I guess, but now they are backpaddling and going capitalist all the same so not even they.
>>
>>284734
Yeah, industrialization and capitalism to the point of lazy people who like being offended seems like the easiest way to socialism
>>
>>284742

I know you're joking, but if you think european style socio-liberalism is socialism then you're wrong.

Can I trust this man's view of modern history?

He is harshly critical of almost everyone. He even claims that "all post-WW2 American presidents would be hanged if judged by the standards of the Nuremberg trials". Is he overly harsh and blinded by bias, or does he offer objective evaluations of the governments of our world?

Wars are hilarious. A part of what makes them so funny is the crazy contraptions that quackers inventors come up with to try to give their team the advantage.

Lets look at some in pic related.

We see a German spy pigeon with a camera attached.
The Brewster Body Shield, a suit of armour designed to stop a machine gun bullet. Think how much of a kek you'd have seeing one of those on the battlefield.
German audio-visual apparatus to enhance the boom and flash of enemy artillery, helping to pinpoint gun positions.
A limber pole ladder used by the Royal Artillery in Mesopotamia to get a better vantage point in the desert.
A British pigeon parachute. Pigeons would be parachuted into occupied territory, with a message asking civilians to write and attach to the pigeon the positions of the enemy, and then release the pigeon so it could fly back to Britain with the information.
US soldiers trained to use mattresses in place of life-jackets. They look like diapers.
Germans generating electricity via bicycle.
A US Naval officer using a massive horn-speaker to banter the troops.
Replacing real trees with fake ones which snipers and scouts could play hide n seek in.
Australian engineers from the 4th Field Company moving a dummy tank in preparation for an attack on the Hindenberg line.
A captured Turkish sniper in camouflage.
US experimental camouflage that looks like it belongs in a Texas Chainsaw Massacre film.
The Kent Cyclist Battalion. Bicycles weren't as important as expected.

"Freedom of religion" and "Separation of Church and State" are completely 100% incompatible. The ONLY way that "religious freedom" works is if the government explicitly recognizes certain religions and religious practices and declares them to be "off-limits" for regulation. That violates the separation of church and state. You cannot have both, to imagine that it is possible is delusion.

"Freedom of religion" = Religious practices shall be explicitly protected from government regulation and discrimatory hiring practices. In order for this to happen, the government must explicitly recognize various religious practices as legitimate expressions of faith. You are able to sue the government or businesses on the grounds that your religion has somehow been offended.

"Separation of Church & State" = Government activities are completely unaffected by religion. No religion or religious practices are recognized by the government in any special way.l Religious practices are not protected from regulation nor are businesses required to hire from all religious groups. You are not able to sue the government or businesses on any religious basis.

No society has ever had both, regardless of claims, nor shall it ever exist.
39 posts and 5 images submitted.
>>
No they're not.

You can believe in religion and have a populace that believes in many religions while still basing law on secularism.

Freedom of religion is also not without exception just like freedom of speech.

You cannot preform illegal activity in the name of your religion. Nor can you impose laws that have no logical basis but religious doctrine. Especially not when not everybody adheres to that religious doctrine.

Viewing the world in such black and white is actual, factual autism.
>>
Freedom doesn't exist, not in the liberkek way at least.
>>
There is no 100% xyz and 100% abc.

The laws are malleable enough for those two to work.
