Teach me about Philippe Pétain, /his/

The Last Frenchman.
He did nothing (morally) wrong.
>>1282048
He was a hero and was killed by cowards
The more I learn about Filipino history, the more pathetic I think the country is.
Am I just an idiotic bigot?
Show me the light of my ways.

Not true senpai. Filipinos are the most powerful race in the world

Our women are the most beautiful in the universe

>Empties the coffers of France on two useless crusades that utterly fail
>Ends up shitting himself to death in Tunisia
Why is Saint Louis so popular, or even considered a saint for that matter? Hell, he wasn't even the greatest French monarch in living memory considering Louis the Lion was his father and the impeccable Philippe Auguste his grandfather. Is "he was really, really Catholic" his only claim to fame?
His claim to fame is that I'm named after him.
>>1280685
He's identical to Richard the Lionheart.
Absolutely shit king, but he went on crusade and did things for religion, that's all that mattered to medieval people so they idolised the fuck out of him. They were basically like idiots today idolising celebrities for doing fucking nothing.
>>1280685
Context. Being a good Catholic was the most important virtue and the main life objective of every man.
Do you welcome modern life or not? It seems that technologies such as self driving cars, Google, etc. save you time and reduce low level problems (while stopping you from getting good at low level skills e.g. no one will drive in 100 years). But then you have stuff like downloading information in to your brain, getting an entire day's nutrients and calories in pill form, robots doing all minimum wage jobs (even without AI) and people wonder what they will do with their lives or where their motivation would come from in a utopia.
I think I'm fine in general with it but it really solidified my nihilism. 100 years ago I could've cared about whether or not I get an education or lunch. This year I have everything but I'm supposed to care about poor people and I can't. In 100 years either everyone will have equal access or I would have been told to care about brain information download speeds for poor people.
That's ignoring apocalyptic scenarios, which I think are comforting for people to imagine will happen
>>1280520
>Do you welcome modern life or not?
yes, it allows me to fuck your mum after I meet her on tinder
>>1280520
In one sense, no. Modern society is creating crybabies who have never known difficulty and will kick up a fuss over the slightest thing.
Yea, I'm definitely one of the losers of the modern age.
I might have been one in the losers in early history anyway.
Change is inevitable though, only a fool would reject the new world, as fucked as it can seem the world has been much worse.
It's only Serbia, what can they do against us?
> Don't worry I can back you up with decisive attack against Russians.
Getting to Constantinople will be a breeze, I promise
Don't worry Nicky, I got a guy who can handle all of these pesky ministers from the government.
What factors allowed Japan to dominate East Asia and rival the west? Why couldn't China do it?
>>1278492
China dominated East Asia before Japan. In contrast Japan had a century of East Asian dominance before they blew it for being too imperialistic.
Both were isolated. China was even more strict on their isolation but Japan was open to being westernized. Japan sent their people across the world, particularly in Europe to learn the ways of western world and came back to westernize it.
China was kind of a victim of its own success
They were arrogant and refused western knowledge

The Crystal Cathedral is pretty impressive
Was 2nd Amendment a mistake ?
>>1285220
for it's time or ours?
It was fairly necessary to defend the country from say, Indians
and you don't send a man to settle territory without the very best killing equipment.
Now is it a mistake in our time? Debatable. It has it's perks though.
If you think it was you're either pretty ignorant of history or literally evil

Why do Catholics have a cult of Mary? Why do Protestants have a cult centered around, Jesus, the lowest member of the trinity?
>>1283121
>Why do Protestants have a cult centered around, Jesus
Because we're Christians.

Okay /his/. Here's a scenario for you.
>you are given the following items
>a magic time machine
>a giant shipping crate filled with 10,000 AK-47 rifles and 5 million bullets that will spawn with you wherever the machine sends you
>a magic book that comes with the crate
>the time machine will send you, the crate and the book to a time and place in history of your choosing
>the magic book will translate itself into whatever language is written and spoken in your chosen time and place
>if you go to a time and place with no written language, the book will not exist
>the book contains knowledge of how to maintain the rifles, as well as make more rifles and bullets
>it also tells where to find the necessary materials, and the prerequisite undiscovered knowledge of ballistics, metallurgy and chemistry (etc) as of the chosen time, but only insofar as pertains to making more AK-47s and bullets
>the book cannot be destroyed
>you will gain all the knowledge in the book, including how to read and write the language it's written in
>when you go to the past, you cannot return to the present
>wherever you go, you can of course try to take over yourself, but this might not work
>when you die, you will wake up tomorrow in your house and everything will be normal
>you get a new magic book that explains how human history developed from your arrival in the past, past your death up until the year 2016 AD
When and where would you go? And why?
>>1281413
Can you go to the future or only past?
>>1281445
Sorry, forgot to clarify that. Only the past.
Give them to the Aztecs. Ensure Spain gets BTFO by crazy leopard-wearing niggers with AKs.
Let's talk about axes and why they were garbage.
Do we really need to hammer in the fact that axes are, in fact, bad for warfare so often?
>>1281360
Yeah, they're so bad that knights during the late Middle Ages used oversized axes called "pole axes" to fight armored opponents.
>>1281375
Yes and we also need to mention the fact that warhammers were in fact the better weapons.
Is this coin authentic? My friend (who is African American) showed me this a while back. I feel like something isn't right, considering it comes from a "real black history" type website.

Coins are probably the most counterfeited items. I'm not saying this one is, but its worth mentioning.
Reverse image searching it turns up nothing but Black Nationalist websites
I have a feeling it's fake
Compare pic related, from Aksum, which was actually full of black people
Hey, what do you know, it doesn't look anything like that.
Why are Americans so hesitant to discuss their history of labor violence? Slavery and Civil Rights are talked about all the time but violence against workers attempting to unionize (and the violent responses of workers themselves) is never discussed. Why is that?
Some notable examples:

Because Americans associate the concept of workers rights with communism
>>1270786
>Why is that?
Because they want their proles to be stupid and docile and to believe in their bourgeois class mythology.

What's surprising is that the very same modern day Americans who support Trump and hate immigrants also hate unions. Yet until very recently white workers and their unions were at the forefront of legislation restricting immigration from Europe, Latin America, and Asia. They were the major force behind the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 and the Immigration Act of 1924. They also opposed the 1965 Immigration Act.

Were they the good guys or bad guys?
The perfidious Albion is never the good guy to anyone but himself
Compared to the Spanish, Portugese and French imperialists of the age they were the loveliest people imaginable.
The British Empire is on par with Rome. What you should ask yourself is whether American Neo-Imperialism is a force for general good, or bad?
The British gave us
-Common law
-Free Trade
-Habeas Corpus
-Trial by jury
-Industrial revolution
-Magna Carta
-Incorruptible administration
-Infrastructure that still survives today centuries after the fact (See: India)
-Once of the first and only counties in the world to end slavery
There is a reason that all members of the commonwealth generally regard British colonialism as a positive. A few countries that weren't even colonized by Britain begged to join the commonwealth.
The British Empire was on the whole a "force for good" in the world, which is more than can be said for the American Empire -- which is almost universally hated, for good reasons.
