Candide, as he was returning home, made profound reflections on the Turk’s discourse. “This good old man,” said he to Pangloss and Martin, “appears to me to have chosen for himself a lot much preferable to that of the six kings with whom we had the honor to sup.” … “Neither need you tell me,” said Candide, “that we must take care of our garden.” “You are in the right,” said Pangloss; “for when man was put into the garden of Eden, it was with an intent to dress it: and this proves that man was not born to be idle.” “Work then without disputing,” said Martin; “it is the only way to render life supportable.”

Was Voltaire right?

Hello, friends.

I'm writing my thesis on "humanitarian intervention", responsibility to protect (R2P) and democracy.

I really like this board and your recommendations, so do you guys have any ideas on reading material? It doesn't need to be directly related with my theme, as long as it could help me.

Cheers!

Where did the secularization of the Islamic world at the start of the previous century come from? And why has is turned around again?
10 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>1285227
I usually never post, but your interest seems sincere.

The secular movements started already mid 19th century before Abdulhamit II. took power.

As we you may know he was deposed by the Young Turks who also were secular. In fact Ataturk was a member of the Young Turks.

After the disaster of WW1 Ataturk established a secular nation, however the country was in desperate need of intellectuals and academicians. So many ex-young turks found their way in to the government.

Secularism held power in Turkey until the 50s when a populist retard named Adnan Menderes came to power. He tried like Erdogan does today to build a mini dictatorship. He ended up in the gallows..

Secularism has been reversed mainly because of the oppression of the Islamic movements in Turkey. Islam is an arab religion and a disease on any nation that wants to remain secular.

Turkey simply crumbled under that disease. The constant rejection of EU, and the unappreciating attitude of the West in general towards Turkey fueled Neo-Ottomanist sentiment.

While I like the Young Turk esque Ottomanism, I absolutely abhor the Islamic variant of Ottomanism.

I hope for a better future for my country, but dont see it happening without the military having a coup.

post people who were robbed of the presidency

had this man not been shot by his own bodyguards, his America would have been a sight to behold

>Every Man a King would have ended the Depression
>his race relations would have been ahead of it's time, had mad credit with black Americans
>cared about education and infrastructure
>would probably have steered out of WWII

Huey Long should have been president.

More like, get off a /his/ board, guy was Roosevelt's rival and quite prominent in American politics in the time. Most of our election techniques come from him & in ways he's also a proto-Trump
>>
His 'Every Man a King' idea was really... fanciful, and unrealistic. It's actually good he didn't become president, since - knowing him - he might have actually attempted to implement it.

So with the collective military history here I pose a question that has been debated for 1000s of years.

Are good Generals/military leaders born, or made?
6 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>1285186
What is this stupid question ?
They're made. They're educated to become soldiers, or learn through experience.
Napoléon Bonaparte is a product of his time. He studied everything he knew at Brienne, and managed to build a military system where talented and dashing marshalls won battles and campaigned for him. Napoléon was able to do a lot of things thanks to his personality and personnal ambition, but every technicity about warfare, he had to read it.
>>
>>1285191
And of Alexander of Macedon?
>>
>>1285219

Studied all the classics available to him.

You can be born a genius, but if you don't have the training and education, you'll be mediocre at best.

Rommel stands as a testament to that, despite his sterling reputation. I like the guy, but seriously, he never fucking understood logistics.

What was the objective problem with slavery, excluding all kinds of muh feelings arguments and moralist crap? Certainly slavers wouldn't care about such shit enough to abandon their practices.
33 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>1284914
Its less efficient than self-motivated labour, it leads to slave revolts, and it causes social instability when it takes all the jobs from the free population. It also means your nation is permanently occupied by a hostile population who hates you, and this can be exploited by foreign enemies
>>
>>1284923
>>1284914
It also means that a non-slave owning enemy will find it much easier to claim the moral high ground, which is an important factor in the modern age
>>
>>1284923
> It causes social instability when it takes all the jobs from the free population
Why do you even need to work if slaves do everything for you? Makes no sense. Even if you emancipate slaves it isn't like they would stop working to create new jobs for you, right?

Why are people drawn to esoteric forms of religion? (Kabbalah, Gnosticism, Sufism etc.)
16 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
A natural inclination.
>>
I personally think it's because esoteric forms of religion tend to be (generally) more lax on otherwise strict laws in any given religion.

And they offer interesting, sometimes edgy, worldviews for people to commit to and "expand their minds".

Hey /his/ what can you tell me about the Hittites? I just learned of Kikkuli's hyper-advanced horse-conditioning regimen, with details such as slow-twitch muscles being selected for, and a folksy knowledge of electrolytes and how to replace them. Can anyone tell me more about these fascinating people? In my uninformed mind I have a hard time differentiating them from the Assyrians.

Their language is related to English

watar = water
taru = tree
duttar = daughter
>>
>>1284770
And roth- means "thing that spins" as in rotate. But that's if I'm not mistaken they speak a language not far removed from proto indo-European. Things like mother, father, tree, water, shit, etc. Are not likely to change much, as they might be cultural universals. Notice how most children's first phoneme is usually (when calling out to their mother) 'ma' around which which most indo-European words for "mother" are based.

But that's neither here nor there.
