I am fascinated by the Library of Alexandria. The amount of knowledge we had at that point (most of it forever lost).
Hypatia was the only woman in charge of the Library and the last. The video below tells what she did, accomplished and how she died in 415.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqzpHYfAdsE
have fun
It's not really worth being fascinated about. There were other, more impressive libraries, most of what was in the one at Alexandria was probably copied and sent to others, especially as it declined and decayed, and by the time of Hypatia the contents of the library were pretty much gone.

Why is there such a disinterest in pre-colonial Sub-Saharan history?
Because there is little interesting things? Like if they are even here in the past, writing wasn't, so we doesn't know about we wuz kings in shit.
>>1341783
Because a lot of it is just spear chuckers in the jungle. The parts that are interesting are even discredited by descendants of people who once lived there.

Ia nihilism being a meme that's pushed to millennials to insubsequently promote communism?
>>1341778
I honestly have no idea how a nihilist could possibly conclude, in the midst of everything (and nothing) that nihilism promotes. That communism is anything but the single most pointless and stupid endeavor that one could pursue, and that to force another man to pursue a ideology with which he does not agree, is the only thing a nihilist may find to truly be distasteful.
Have a cute rebuild Asuka.
>>1341778
No but your premise is absolutely meme that's being pushed by butthurt gnostics.
>>1341790
nihilism promotes apathy toward your world and your reality. ergo, you must accept your reality and not work or aspire to anything greater because even if you do everything is still meaningless. challenges are obsolete.
in a capitalist economy, the meme is that you can work to build more wealth despite being born wealthy or poor. in a communist economy you simply accept what life offers you (even if it is little).
it's about killing the human spirit, really.
Why was he so wrong about everything?

This is pretty inexplicable meme, no one else on the internet except for /his/ seems to give a shit at all about this guy but you all can't stop talking about him every few hours.
When and why did American politicians on both sides abandon the working class and embrace neoliberal economic policies that destroyed manufacturing and primary industries, undermined American workers, and crippled unions?
Ronald Reagan.
>>1340872
It stated under Nixon, desu
>>1340805
It all started with the Cold War.
The business world warned of “the hazard facing industrialists” in “the newly realized political power of the masses,” and the need to wage and win “the everlasting battle for the minds of men” and “indoctrinate citizens with the capitalist story” until “they are able to play back the story with remarkable fidelity”; and so on, in an impressive flow, accompanied by even more impressive efforts, and became one of the central themes of the 20th century.
If you want quotes from those exact words in policy: Ibid., and Elisabeth Fones-Wolf, Selling Free Enterprise: the Business Assault on Labor and Liberalism, 1945-1960 (Univ. of Illinois Press, Urbana, 1995). Also, Stuart Ewen, PR!: A Social History of Spin (Basic Books, New York, 1996). On the broader context, see my Intellectuals and the State and Force and Opinion, reprinted in Deterring Democracy (Verso, London, 1991).
What's your take on we shows like crash course history, wisecrack or nerd writer.
Personally, I think they do an alright job when it comes to providing straightforward answers like dates of events of causes of them.
But God, when it comes to philosophy they can get wrong.
>>1339452
While I agree with the thrust of your general concern, I think they often get the most important points right.
For example:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0N_RO-jL-90
>>1339466
Of course, they get the foundation correct. But I think the style of these YouTube educational videos actually detracts from learning.
They're often short, up to 10-15 minutes at the most. Which might account for their fast talking or maybe that's how they naturally talk. Personally I enjoy wisecrack and nerd writer.
Wisecrack's "The philosophy of ___" is amusing enough.
Crash course is too simplistic and i don't like John Green and his style of humour.
Nerdwriter is meh
Looking to expand my knowledge on Native American history. Does anybody have some books or other resources they might recommend?
Like what? Great Plains natives? Pacific Northwest natives? The Pueblo of the South west? Natives of the apalacians? Eskimos of Alaska? Native Hawaiians?
>>1339256
Not OP, but do you know of anything that covers all of the above? Even if only briefly
>>1339269
Also, can anybody reccomend a good starting source/book for American history in general? Like everything for colonization to the 21st century? I really liked my history books when i was in elementary/middle school, but i cant remember the names of them and i get the feeling there are much better sources out there nowadays. I want to learn all i can about the history of my country.
The only evidence I could find on this were these quotes fom two different letters he sent to her,
“I have been dreaming about your dear soft, warm hands, I am awaiting with impatience the time when I can sit near you and kiss them but pray keep your promise you gave me always to give me alone the soft inside of your hand to kiss, but of course you keep this as a secret for yourself.”
and
“I have again dreamt about you, this time I was alone with you in your library when you stretched forth your arms and pulled me down. Then you took off your gloves and laid your hand gently on my lips for me to kiss it...I wish you would do the same when I am in Berlin alone with you in the evening.”

If this is the only evidence then it strikes me as a fairly weak case. Nothing about either of these strike me as overtly sexual, and to me at least it sounds like he was just really close to his mother. I'd like to add that as this was translated from another language it gives the translaters some lee-way on the wording in it to make things support their case more. Also these so called "experts" would have motivation to make this case as it would earn them some publicity, and no one mainstream really wants to defend ww2 or pre ww2 germany all that much because of the connection to naziism.
hello I am kaiser bill's brother and can confirm, they fucked on the reg!
>>1336685
shut up bro
>>1336672
Hello, I am not Kaiser Wilhelm, just a very close friend. He's a very cool guy and I would submit all of my properties to him, but he certainly didn't love his mother in a sexual manner, he grew up in a motherless environment and actually wanted people to find out about those letters, as a way to call for help.
More historical paintings like this, /his/
crazy idea here but what if- maybe i'm out of my mind here but- WHAT IF you'd actually look at, you know, art actually MADE in the history instead? you know, quality art? fine art? art that have stunned people for centuries rather than what some history circlejerking autist posted on DeviantArt -08?
fuck i'm so done with you historyfags. i just want to discuss rembrandt damn it

Why do important people dress like shit nowadays? If you saw someone wearing something like this, you would immediately know that he was a big guy. Now everyone wears suits.
My favourite civilization are the Amhara-Tigray and I like most Ethiopian peoples in general, like the Gurage, the Kembatta, many Oromo subgroups like the Guji, Arsi or Tulama, many Omotic peoples like thje Dizi, Wolaytta, Maale, Gamo or Kaffa, etc. ^_^
Are there any more Ethioboos like me around here? Would love to share ideas with you. :-)

I am making a thing where I put together pictures of ethnic groups of each country. I just finished with Ethiopia and it was interesting learning about all these different people.
Is solitary confinement cruel?

Eh,every now and then I don't think I would even mind it
>Free food

>>1343566
Yes, but all aspects of incarceration are necessarily cruel. The people are locked away from the people they love, even if the people they love are sick or dying.
>cruel and unusual punishment
>unconstitutional
It isn't unusual because it's routine.
/his/, who are other interesting intellectuals to watch besides zizek on youtube??
