Let's talk about Hitler.

We all know while great as he was a political leader, subjective, and his faults as a military leader which ultimately led to the downfall of the Third Reich.

What I want to know is exactly where he went from being a great leader of the new German Empire, to the almost moronic arm-chair strategist that we've all come to love

Memes aside, I only know about his common faults such as inability to listen to generals, and the pants on head clusterfuck of Operation Barbarossa, due to poor logistics and thinking that staying around for winter was a good idea.

What are some specific examples of Hitler's ineptitude as a leader? I'm talking ignoring infortmation, advice, and bouts of outright insanity and delusion.

I don't understand how anyone thought allowing an art student to be elected leader of a country was a good idea
>>

Damn those numerals, so close
>bouts of outright insanity and delusion.
Numero fucking uno was consorting with Theodor Morell at all, let alone the YEARS he closely confided with him for medical advice. That singlehandedly is enough to destabilize even a brilliant strategist. Morell gave Adolf strychnine tablets and meth (among ...other things), and it got to the point where cabinet members at the time were actually so baffled by the willful destruction of the fuhrer's health that they honestly wondered if he was a Bolshevik assassin in deep cover!

A failed art student, mind you. He was apparently no good at faces. Landscapes were pretty okay.

What is the purpose of studying any philosophy or ideology?
What does it serve me, when i basically experience the world throught a unique perception based on environment timing heredity etc, which in turn would make my choice of values and understanding?

Don't know if this is an overdone topic since I don't normally go on this board but what does /his/ think about Jury Nullification?
21 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
In my opinion it's a good thing. If an entire jury, rigorously selected, agrees that a "crime" isn't worth being punished for, then it shouldn't be.
>>
Leaving the task of making a balanced and well thought out legal decision up to a bunch of random assholes is usually not ideal in the first place. Add a dash of having lawyers who actually research how best to manipulate juries and you've got a jolly old time.

There's a place for juries, but you can't assume they'll be rational.
>>
It will get you rejected from jury duty quicker than a rock in compton

Machiavelli wrote The Prince as a guide for how princes should maintain power, where morals DONT matter. How would Aristotle or Plato respond?

Don't be a jerk because you succumb to base desires like the lust for power.

You should want to do good, not see good and evil as a means to an end.
Good is an end in itself.

Would anything have turned out differently had France and England declared war on Germany after invading Czechoslovakia?
21 posts and 2 images submitted.

Poland would be free
>>
As i recall Czechoslovakia was in a better position to defend itself than Poland ever was due to the terrain and already in place fortefications.
>>
>>1340433

This is true, and as an added effect, Germany wasn't nearly as strong in 1938 as they would be in 1939.

However, I'm pretty sure that Britain and France were also considerably weaker, although I haven't done a lot of reading on how much, but I know Britain for instance almost doubled her defense spending post-Munich.

How that new equation would turn out is something I don't feel qualified to make claims about.

Tell me about Antoninus Pius. Was he a good emperor? Marcus Aurelius admires him a lot, and he is generally considered one of the best emperors.

Can anyone rec me a book on the lives of the emperors?

>>
>>1340265
Little is known about him because little was written down in his time. His reign was so peaceful and comfy that historians couldn't think of anything to write about.
>>
>>1340265
Hadrian intended him to be a stop gap between himself and Marcus Aurelius. Unfortunately he just kept living. Antoninus benefited from the success of Hadrian and was an able administrator. However he lacked the vision and initiative that defined the reigns of his predecessors. This would lead to a difficult reign for Marcus Aurelius where many of the problems ignored by Antoninus exploded with disastrous results.
>>
>>1340629
Basically everything that could be said about him.

He does deserve props though for not letting the Senate and patricians drag Hadrian's name through the mud and stood up for him, even though he knew he was just a stop gap for Aurelius.

Was there ever such a thing as honor or glory on the field of battle?

Yes. In ritual battles and war. Also some glory in raiding. As soon as combat was switched from ritual warfare to massed engagements, most of the honor was lost. With the advent modern (total) warfare, there-s little glory to be gained either.

Also, ww2 sniper duels were among (if not THE) the last forms of semi-ritual warfare left.

Never heard of AHC.

>Stalin
Legit psychopath, reputedly enjoyed signing death warrants so much he would stay up late into the night to do it.
>Hirohito
Not evil in any sense, just a figurehead "ruler" with no power.
>Qaddaffi
Malignant narcissist and child killer, legit evil.
>Hitler
Romantic idealist who drank so deeply of the ideological kool-aid that he ended up a genocidal mass murderer ad ironic ruiner of his own country and ideology. Hard to call him evil, even so, more a case of a man who did evil because he blinded himself with ideology.
>Osama
Religious nutcase. Much like Hitler, hard to call him evil even tho his actions certainly were.
>Mao
Bumpkin idiot who someone ended up in charge of a revolution. Murdered more than his fair share of people and trashed his country's economy and culture, but like Hitler and Osama it's the ideas he made himself a slave to that were evil, not the man himself.
>Saddam
Psychopathic gangster and kleptocrat, gassed his own people and launched wars of aggression with no pretext. Legit evil.
>???
Idk who this is.
>Mussolini
Self-aggrandising bombast and romantic, same deal as Hitler in many ways.
>Kim il Sung
He, his father and his son are all psychopathic kleptocrats, legit evil both as a person and as a dynasty.

You're right. They all look the same to

Do you hold historical scientists morally accountable?

Joseph Goldberger, assigned to study pellagra by the surgeon general, fed prisoners a restricted diet which he believed would induce pellagra. But this diet of corn, coffee, and cabbage was considered healthy by most people at the time, only Goldberger thought it would be harmful. No one accepted he was right until after the pellagra-stricken prisoners were released

I suppose it depends on what you view as wrong and whether or not the benefits of such horrible experiments were good for humanity.

As far as I am aware of, they tested Smallpox vaccines on orphaned children and prisoners before providing it to the aristocracy, and they used orphans to carry cowpox across the pond to the USA to start treatments there. Obviously the benefits of smallpox vaccines are apparent.

As a scientist and someone who loves to engage in philosophy, I kinda have a weird perspective into both worlds, considering I have seen people who'd use human infants for testing drugs on Malaria if given the option
