The shield has been an important tool of war throughout most of human history, and still sees use by riot police.
In this thread, we discuss what was the best general purpose shield design.
And if you absolutely necessarily must be a cunt and insist that there is no overall best, circumstances and so on, lets divide it into best organized warfare shield (tight formation) and best skirmishing shield (looser fighting), and cavalry shield (passive protection when charging).

I'm unaware of any differences between viking round shields and any other european round shields from the iron age onward (other than what's painted on them).
Pls enlighten me.

I can be the leader of the free world. Because that dumbass whose the leader of america right now? He realized he could get more people to listen to him by taking money from big corporations and buying advertising. All the american people want is a voice of reason that is unbiased. Its easy to like something unbiased. It doesn't make me hate anything I'm not ready to hate. It just makes me think, and that thinking helps me do more than just nothing. Because nothing is boring when people think. You don't have to ask me why. You could ask yourself why. Asking me why is just a way to get me to think about it with you~

You don't need acid to go woah that's trippy
well maybe you do if you don't think just that thought and the reasoning process was interesting. I play a lot of music and write a lot of lyrics and write a lot of comedy for no other reason than I want to do that. I was worried about inspiration but I realized I could just say I was infinitely inspired and try and write. I only had to say I was infinitely inspired to satisfy my reasoning. Now man am I crazy, my ego wants me to worry that I'm crazy (Trust me bro, I am), but I realize just because my ego wants something doesn't mean its true. You're ego is going to try and convince you that my reasoning isn't true. You could just ignore your ego and reason with me and realize reasoning things at a simple level and thinking about them a lot is how we solve all that really hard shit we don't want to think about.
>>
>>1501313
When I said trust me bro I know, I meant I know I'm not crazy. I was worried you thought that just now, you know that you saw me think it...(woah my ego just wanted my reasoning to be okay)

Is academia an appropriate topic for this board?

I'm looking into going to grad school for aesthetic philosophy but I don't really know which schools have degenerated into complete nonsense for their curriculum yet.

I have this guide I found:

http://c.ymcdn.com/sites/aesthetics-online.org/resource/resmgr/Files/graduateguide.pdf

but I'm not sure where to lean.

I know a philosophy PhD is a waste of time and I know I could be better served studying on my own, but I want a PhD mostly for my own vanity.

tl;dr: any non shit american universities?

A: What a massive waste of time anything philosophy is in 2016. Everything is corrupted besides corners of the internet. This coming from someone who majored in philosophy their first year of uni.

B: universities are leftist indoctrination centers, therefore the antithesis to true philosophy.

Is there a specific term or categorization for that? For example english is usually spoken with the tongue and the teeth, but arabic involves much more throat action.

Also what other languages use interesting ways of to make sounds?

What are your favorite and/or some worthwhile and good historical fiction novels or book series worth reading that are light on fantasy and, if not perfect, are still notably historically accurate for the period despite being fiction?

Pic related.

I have no idea if it's accurate due to being a pleb but I found Pillars of the Earth very enjoyable

I also liked Clan of the Cave Bear but that's mostly speculation about prehistory padded out by increasingly mediocre heteronormative non-kinky sex scenes as the series progresses

Christian Camerons series are all great. I thought the Tyrant (diadochi wars) series was the weakest but still enjoyable. William Gold (medieval) was probably my favourite. I really enjoyed the Alexander stand alone too.

Robert Fabbri's Vespianus (early empire) series was great but i thought character growth was a bit weak.

Sam Barrones, Eskkar Saga (dawn of the bronze age) was decent too. I nearly didnt start this series because he starts every book with a shout out to Bill O'reilly. Only read the first 3 books.

No idea how accurate any of these books are.

I don't want this to turn into a contentious debate, even though I know that this is a contentious subject matter. I have never been able to understand how people could believe in god and subsequently follow a religion. I have just never felt that believing in god made any sense, and it seems so incredibly illogical to me, it's unfathomable how anyone could believe in something which I see as utter nonsense. Again, I'm not trying to be contentious here, I'm just trying to understand what it is about people that gives them these feelings, what makes them actually believe that such things exist. I also don't want to hear the old "I've seen things which can't be explained" thing, because that's so annoying, I am more interested in knowing why exactly some people believe in god, not some pointless anecdote which means nothing to anyone but yourself.

To make it clear, do you mean in a modern, Western context where there are scientific, measurable explanations for the world around us, or a historic context, where there quite often was no other explanation than "God did it"?

Why are Unions so hated by working-class whites when historically they were the biggest defenders of their interests?

Prior to about the 1960s they were:
-anti-immigration (were the driving force behind the Chinese Exclusion Act in 1882, the Immigration Act of 1924, and other measures)
-pro-gun
-anti-state
-pro-family
-pro-West (they conceived of the idea of an "American Standard of Living" in contrast to third-world wage slavery)
-pro-white
-pro-protectionism and anti-globalism

Shouldn't people like /pol/tard love unions?

>>
>>1500188
Because they became legitimate extortion rackets after being overtaken by the mob in the 40's and 50's. They also began actively working against the average worker in favor of personal political kickbacks (See: NAFTA and CAFTA). True unionization died decades ago in America and they aren't coming back anytime soon.
>>
Public employees unions are the ones that the white middle class is against. And rightly so. Private sector unions are not under attack.

One guy is an honest Christian his whole life, kind, moral and virtuous to the fullest. He dies living a perfect Christian life.

Another guy is literally spawn of Satan, murderer, rapist and drug user BUT he repents his sins on the deathbed in fear of hell.

They both deserve heaven. Yes or No?
45 posts and 6 images submitted.
>>
No, because the evil guy has self interest and fear as a reason for repenting. Not for the pure love of God
>>
Neither deserves heaven. Salvation is the free gift of God based on the righteousness of Christ.

Most retarded thing I have ever heard.

Can we agree that the history of the vikings is interesting even though they tend to be romanticized and overrated as warriors in folklore/popular media? They were marauding pirates who attacked previously-defenseless monasteries, but they were other things as well. They:

>Traveled to far lands in uniquely-designed ships
>Settled in many of the places they traveled to, such as the Danelaw and Ireland
>Were influenced by the places they settled and formed unique cultures, like in Normandy
>Traded with distant peoples, such as Arabs and Greeks
>Worked as mercenaries for the Byzantines
>Were among the last Europeans to practice Germanic paganism
>Had a peculiar system of beliefs that involved rune stones and boat burials
>Influenced the development of England and other places dramatically (such as by giving rise to the Normans)

That's all substantially more interesting to me than the whole raiding part of the viking image.

Was there really a serial killer boom in the 70-80's or was it just media sensationalism?

It seems that way
>Jeffrey Dahmer
>John Wayne Gacy Jr.
>Ted Bundy
>David Berkowitz
>Edmund Kemper
>Larry Bittaker and Roy Norris
>Richard Ramirez
etc.

Of course, sensationalism played a part in making people aware, but there are other factors (stealing from someone's answer on Quora):

The completion of most of the Interstate highway system - This allowed killers to travel the country far more easily than in the past and assisted in their avoiding driving through smaller towns where they might have been stopped and questioned by local authorities.

Police officers were poorly trained and poorly disciplined in that time period - This likely lead to a number of “runaways" and "missing person" cases (which were actually serial murders) being allowed to grow cold due to incompetent or lax investigation.

More women were living alone and working outside the home. - This gave killers greater access to victims.

The “stigmas” associated with homosexuality were lessened , meaning that far more gay men cruised and engaged in anonymous liaisons. - This made it easier for killers to isolate and kill them.

Drug use/abuse became somewhat more acceptable socially. - Killers were able to use drugs (or the promise of drugs) to lure addicts and casual drug use was frequent and almost “legitimized."

As for the reason why there aren't serial killers today like there were then is because of forensic science getting much more advanced, especially with DNA profiling being available. (first used in 1985) Also I guess a better understanding of criminals and their motives helped as well

So yes I believe there was a boom in that time period
>>
Modern society does not have "serial killers" anymore, our sociopaths kill in open daylight, either through political motives (Breivik) or religious (Jihadists) etc.

I personally am much more afraid of 21st century sociopaths than the boogeymen in shadowy alleys.

These days you can get practically shot/blown up anywhere, anytime.
>>
>>1496589
Yeah in a way with serial killers even though what they did to their victims was disgusting, in a way you feel like are able to avoid it, while shooters just kill indiscriminately most of the time and with them you never know if you'll be in the wrong place at the wrong time
