Is Rome the biggest argument for multiculturalism?

>almost all of their culture was stolen from their neighbors
>weapons and tactics for their military were likewise stolen and adapted from all over the Mediterranean
>empire consisted of dozens of different cultures and religions
>all peoples striving towards a roman ideal that was itself an amalgamation of different cultures
>still formed one of the largest and most successful empires in history

No it's the biggest argument for a single culture that borrows from other cultures and integrates all citizens into the idea of one nation.

>>almost all of their culture was stolen from their neighbors

What does this have to do with multiculturalism? Japan for example is one of the most homogenous countries in the world, despite taking almost all their cutlure from China and America

He got arrested for insulting Islam yes, a lot of people supported his freedom of speech.

Now he made this video for example, and people are turning against him, saying he went too far.

So, Rome fell because the degenerate settled Romans got conquered by the stronger more virile barbarians, right? And this also happened in China (Twice), in England, it will happen in Europe/USA sooner or later, etc etc etc. Weak people get beaten up by strong people.

Most adherents of this belief tout it as an unchangeable fact of life, that all great nations are bound to be overtaken by smelly dumb barbarian scum because the great nations end up getting filled with spineless wimps.

But that's not what happened in 9th century England. Alfred the Great and friends, despite being "degenerate" settled farmers, drove off the "superior" Danish invaders.

Are there any other cases of this happening? When Civilization successfully fends off the Barbarians? I'm not counting the Qing getting overthrown as they'd long since conquered the Han and become fully Chinese when they got tossed out.

Pic related, it's Alfred.

Rome fell because of Christianity. The Germanics just walked in almost unopposed since most Romans were pacifist due to their indoctrination into Judeo-Chrisitian teachings and they forgot the warrior ways of their pagan, non-Christian ancestors.

The Anglo-Saxons still ended up getting conquered by the Danes in the 11th century, and the Normans after that, for good this time.

How did law enforcement work in the past? From what I've about the Roman Republic they never had any type of police force and the same seems to hold true for the Empire. The laws they did have was made by the elites to handle certain conflict between other elites. Use of private force would could include murder in retaliation seemed to be allowed to some extent.

In Italian Manpower (pp.551-557) the author talks about the elites arming their slaves/retainers and taking others property or using their own little private armies for political reasons.

In The Last Generation of the Roman Republic (pp.433-448) also mentions such violence noting that many of the pleb uprisings were really just rabble rousing from the elite.

Did other places around the world at that time create any police like forces?

I think for most of human history in most places it was just left to the involved and their families to sort things out.

Of course if there was a really big problem you could send in the military.

I'm pretty sure that Roman Vigiles acted as a sort of law enforcement.
>>
Law enforcement meant "not letting the plebs riot in the streets". Actual protection came mafia figures who would protect the streets in exchange for pay

Had no idea where to post this so I figured I'd try it here. A friend of mine got this from her dead father's house, who got it from a dead woman who was ancient in the '70s. My best guess was Victorian Era, maybe a religious piece of some sort? We've heard all kinds of suggestions. Help me, /his/

So, the other day, someone linked me to something about Operation Pike. It was a scrapped British plan to bomb the USSR around the Caucasus from French bases, to cut off (or at least try) the oil supply going to Germany.

Could this have actually made the war winnable for Germany? I can't imagine Stalin taking being bombed well, and if the USSR joins up with Germany, or at least they come to some kind of understanding and mutual defense setup, suddenly Germany's position is enormously stronger by an order of magnitude.

Also, how the hell did anyone think this was a good idea? I wouldn't even call myself at the level of an armchair general and I can see that the notion is all kind of stupid. And yet apparently, the British government seriously considered this.

>Also, how the hell did anyone think this was a good idea? I wouldn't even call myself at the level of an armchair general and I can see that the notion is all kind of stupid. And yet apparently, the British government seriously considered this.

It was a result of the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact. The British and French feared that Stalin would stay out of the war and continue to supply Hitler with oil and so on, as Hitler and Stalin were already drawing up the new borders for Eastern Europe and had conducted a joint invasion of Poland.

And up until Operation Barbarossa was launched, the various communist groups in western countries were actively campaigning against war with Germany. Even in occupied France the French Communists were helping the German/Vichy governments against the Resistance. So there was a very real fear that Nazi Germany and the USSR would maintain neutrality or would actually come to some sort of partnership of totalitarian assholes.

(Of course from what I know of Operation Pike it seemed more a contingency plan like the US rainbow plan to attack Canada with chemical weapons.)

The USSR and Nazi Germany joining up for a full-scale war would have been so fucking surreal.

Why the fuck does "whiteness" hold soo much importance for people?
Why is it that discussions in so many places around the internet devolve into something about whiteness after a while?
Why do people care so much about being considered white or who is white and who is not?

What does "white" even mean and why does it preoccupy people's minds so much? As far as I can see, it's literally a social construct as there is no objective definition for it.
This is so utterly ridiculous yet it just keeps happening. These fucking kids are more interested if Greeks/Romans and Jesus were white than what they did (or at least it seems to be since whiteness threads gather so many replies).
Even the thread about the history of Iran got completely derailed into stupid shit about whiteness.

What is the solution to this cancer?

Well, it was an aristocratic society. The army is typically viewed as where men made something of themselves, but the highest rank a non-aristocrat could typically attain would be the rank of Prefect, which had to be attained after becoming a Chief Centurion. Not many men would get that high. Even then, you still couldn't become an aristocrat after becoming a Prefect.

The system, not just in the army but in the merchantile world and others, rewarded hard work, ambition and generally the accumulation of wealth, but birth always remained important. For example, ex slaves, no matter how accomplished, could not hold high office. new citizens would always be stigmatized for their past.

Read Petronius's stuff about Trimalchio, that's my source.

Pretty good for a general outlook at eastern philosophy.

He's also one hell of a public speaker. I don't think I've ever heard anyone express himself so well in public, with such clarity. And given the length and quantity of speeches he did, I'm pretty sure it was all out of his head.
>>
>>1494019
Okay introduction to Eastern philosophy, but more effort is needed if you actually want to understand what he's talking about because Eastern philosophy is very reliant on experience rather than theory.

why did every ancient society have advance knowledge of the bow? upon contact with native americans ( native is a meme i know they came from siberia ) they had already known an exactly similar concept of the bow and arrow of the europeans. When the romans met the suebi they had noted that they already had bows, and when the spanish arrived in mexico the aztecs already had the tlahuitolli. When was this invented?
