Most pirates were sea born muggers and highway men who would avoid attacking any ship which appeared armed and capable of defending itself.
Some pirates would capture slave ships and release the captives with some of the released captives joining the pirate crew. Others were just as likely to treat the slaves like any other cargo, take it to port and sell it.
The captain of a pirate ship was usually elected by the crew, his role was to lead the attack when boarding a prize ship. For this he would get a larger cut of the booty. The quartermaster aboard a pirate ship was probably the most powerful figure because he controlled and divided the booty.
Captains who failed to lead an attack were quickly deposed.

A few words of explanation before I go further:
These pictures are broadly arranged in order of chronological events rather than the order in which I visited the parks. That being said, they may be slightly out of order in some places.

I visited Mananas, Antietam, Fredericksburg/Spotsylvania/Chancellorsville/The Wilderness (All in one park), Gettysburg, Harper's Ferry, and DC.

Unfortunately my camera died in Fredericksburg about 2/3rds through the trip so I only have pictures up to that point, I was unable to get good photographs of Chancellorsville, The Wilderness, Spotsylvania, or anything in DC.

Plenty of material hedonist love to think of themselves as less hedonistic than they are, since it improves their hedonism in thinking that they are not animals...most people who claim to be religious are not all, it is just the way they are.
In buddhism, you even leave this spiritual hedonism, after you have gained it, which is called jhanas, since you understand that this bliss from prayers, which is just a great, but not perfect concentration-stilness, are not personal nor permanent and that you are still prone to avidity and aversion.

This is the tragedy of the fall of man.

There are two trees, the tree of life and the tree of knowledge. The books of Moses written in metaphors and allegories, as is most of the Bible.

Elephants are terrible for warfare. There's a section in Arrian's Conquests of Alexander if I recall where Alexander says how his men were initially terrified of elephants because, hey, who wouldn't be. But Alexander quickly saw that Elephants are unable to turn once they begin charging. In other words, in order to beat elephant-mounted troops, you literally just need to step to the left. Hannibal's disastrous invasion also shows how its too difficult to transport elephants in comparison to, say, horses.

War elephants are dangerous because they are actually war elephants. Like war horses, we just don't HAVE them any more. They actively attack the enemy. In fact, the main danger was not that they would charge stupidly and miss the enemy, but that they would turn around and attack your own troops; elephant riders would carry picks and hammers to split an elephants skull, killing it, if it started doing this.
