I know the elvish language is based on finno-ugric and that elves are nature spirits from germanic mythology and religion, but did tolkien base them partly on ancient germanic people?

They live in the forests, have a special connection to nature, sing sagas, have underground caves (albeit much grander, larger and more fantastical then the ones germanic people would have dug) and have long blond hair, the only thing about tolkien's elves is that they have advanced metal working and good tech, and a refined aesthetic and sensibility where as germanic people were said to be rugged and somewhat wild.

I think there are aspects of all of tolkien's races of middle earth which are based on germanic people, and that makes total sense since its based on germanic mythology and culture. Hobbits for example, while very short and probably based on some pre-indo-european or celtic people of the british isles, but have a folkish, rural life style and live in villages that look like germanic villages, and live under grassy hills like northern germanic people.

Humans too, in middle earth resemble germanic people with their clothing, hair styles and social organisations. There is also a human race in tolkien's universe which is supposed to be specifically based on germanic people, pic related.

I'm interested in this because it emphasizes the more mysterious side of ancient germanic people and the aspects of their culture that weren't really covered or paid attention to by classical historians, since the classical world was obviously more focused on their barbaric, war like side.

This is an ancient swedish cattle call that reminds me of elves, elvish and their special connection with nature

>and have long blond hair
they actually don't. in all his works tolkien described them as having black or otherwise dark hair.

Why did the 80's and 90's have such a lasting cultural impact on today's society?

A lot of stuff from the 80s and 90s such as the music, video games, fashion, ect is seen as iconic and of better quality than the cultural aspects of the 00's and 10's. Why? What made the 80's and 90's so powerful?

What's a good book about the internal history of the HRE (aka not something that becomes "a history of the House of Habsburg" after the 15th century)?
I'm particularly interested in how the states were ruled, how they interacted between each others, and what differences were there between living in different parts of the empire.
>>
>>1482922
For an intro to Rome, I always reccomend the History of Rome podcast. If you must have a book, then Mommsen's history would be great.

I myself am interested in some biographies of personages that have been overlooked because of Western-Eurocentrism. Fascinating stories of people like Mohammed bin Tughgluq or Stephen Dushan, that you never hear of unless you live in their countries. I would prefer biographies of kingz and shiet, but anyone would be fine, so long as their story is entertaining.

Meh. There are far better. Anything Beard, Syme, Cameron or Goodman would be better.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stefanie_Rabatsch

> Hitler fell in love with her after she passed by him during her daily daughter-mother stroll in Linz, glancing at him. Although madly in love with her to the point of suicide, Hitler never once spoke with her, and she later married an Austrian army officer.

>Hitler insisted that Kubizek stalk Stefanie and delivered daily reports on her activity while he was away visiting his mother or family.[4] In one report, Kubizek wrote that Stefanie loved to dance and had taken lessons. Hitler disliked dancing and reportedly replied, "Stefanie only dances because she is forced to by society on which she unfortunately depends on. Once Stefanie is my wife, she won't have the slightest desire to dance!"

>In June 1906, Stefanie gave Hitler a smile and a flower from her bouquet as she was passing him in her carriage.[5] Kubizek later described the scene:
>Never again did I see Adolf as happy as he was at that moment. When the carriage had passed he dragged me aside and with emotion he gazed at the flower, this visible pledge of her love. I can still hear his voice, trembling with excitement, 'She loves me!'

Did Chr*stianity ruin the Roman Empire?
76 posts and 7 images submitted.
>>
Yes. Diocletian's legalization of Christianity was one of largest blunders in all of history.
>>
>>1505817

Short story: Yes, Christianity did have a hand in destroying the Roman Empire

However the main reason as to why the Empire fell is because the Romans lost the will to expand their Empire and instead concentrated on maintaining Pax Romana. Also the amount of different ethniticities inside the Empire which increased in number as the Empire expanded, helped undermine Roman unity. Heck, in the late imperial period (200-476) people of non-Greco-Roman ethnicity even managed to become Emperor (i.e. Diocletian who was of Illyrian descent).

While Christianity originally helped strengthen the declining Empire by providing a common religion for all Roman citizens, it ultimately proved to be Rome's downfall, since Christian and Pagan mobs would fight each other, thereby creating even more discord inside the Empire. Furthermore, the antiscientific doctrines of early Christianity would stunt scientific growth in the west for almost an entire millenium (i.e. killing of Hypatia). Also Christian priests promoted reckless immigration of Christian Germanic tribes, in the hopes that they would help combat the pagans.

I'm going to hazard a guess and say that the Ottomans are what finally killed it.

Do Christians believe that prayer has a real, measurable effect?
For example, if you toss a coin one thousand times, and pray each time for head, will you get more than 50% head?

>>
>>1510607
At the very least prayer has a measurable effect on the person praying.
>>
>>1510607
Depends on the denomination. In my own faith tradition, it's believed that God will do whatever he wants, and prayer is a way of being close with God and his family. It's been awhile since I've read on it though, so I could be mistaken.

Praying for head seems to work for Catholic priests.

Dear humanity majors,

Can someone actually explain to me what's systematic racism/sexism/oppression meant to mean?

I've seen many protesters and scholars mention it as their casus belli against society, yet no one actually wants to explain what they mean by that. It's not supposed to be like normal racism, and supposedly even Obama has some for being black.

Are systems of oppression actually accepted in academia? How are they seen/measured? Or is modern progressivism starting to act more like a secular religion?

I'm legit curious, hope this isn't seen as bait.
