Is anybody here capable of defining medieval scholasticism in simple terms? I'm studying the Renaissance period as a reactionary educational reform to medieval scholasticism, and yet, I can't seem to quite get a grip on the exact meaning and terms.

>>
I am under the impression that scholastic is a blanket term, a vague way to speak about many different ideas and people. A bit like courtly love, or chivalry. Or feudalism.
>>
>>1593548
I think it is today, but supposedly back then it meant something different, a rigid and intransigent form of learning that inevitably referred back to the Orthodox church of the time. It's all very vague.
>>
>scholasticism
It's Catholic shitposting basically.

>be Vandals living around Baltic Sea
>get pushed out by Huns
>don't even know how to cross rivers so amass on the edge of the Rhine River, edge of Roman Empire
>only able to cross it when it freezes over one year
>just keep running until a fucking ocean blocks the way
>suddenly become expert sailors when just a few years ago didn't know how to cross a fucking river
>Boniface, governor of Roman North Africa, invites Vandals over to help in impending Civil War in exchange for land
>80,000 Vandals land on Africa to aid when Boniface writes to them saying "lol, false alarm, turns out that dick Aëtius was telling lies and there isn't going to be a civil war, so go away"
>Vandals get pissed and conquer North Africa, forming Vandalia
>as Aryan Christians they persecute the Catholics there
>Romans, being innately treacherous, murder their own emperor
>Emperor's widow asks the Vandals to invade Rome and save them from the dishonor of having to marry his murder
>conquer Rome
>basically own the Mediterranean for 100 years
Fucking Baltic snow savages went from not knowing how to cross a river to ruling the Mediterranean from the coasts of Africa.

Is there a crazier story for one people?

Yeah, "ruling" the Mediterrenean, nice rule they got there, because conquering Carthage for some decades and then getting genocided by the Byzantines is such an achievement.

>Got slaughtered and expelled from Sardinia by the Byzantines after barely 70 years, the only contribution they made there was sinking part of the Imperial fleet at Olbia, which actually was only a dick move and contributed to the decline of Rome
>sacked Rome
>Try to invade Sicily, got their shit pushed in by another Germanic tribe
>After pillaging some fraction of the Mediterranean after having stolen Carthage's fleet they get slaughtered by the Byzantines like pigs

They were the most pathetic Germanic tribe ever and left no legacy.

Why did Hitler feel the need to kill so many people? Like, couldn't he just have focused on building his own country? Did he have to keep expanding the war and finding new enemies to kill?

What should have been a minor border dispute between Germany and Poland really got out of hand. Like, how did he go from "hey there are some ethnic germans on your side of the border, maybe we could move it a few kilometres that way so they're under our protection" to marching 3 millions soldiers to the banks of the Volga and fucking tanks invading North Africa and France.

Is Islam *worse* than other religions?
6 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Attempts at making it a religion of reason have been a spectacular failure.

For example, the Mu'tazila attempted to put reason above all, and in typical Islamic fashion, the Caliph al-Ma'mun launched an inquisition against those that questioned the Mu'tazila teaching on the Qu'ran, therefore it is now synonymous with religious persecution.

The Mu'tazila, Kalam and the Falsafa are synonymous with heterodoxy.

An Islamic Reformation did happen in the 18th Century with Al Wahhab, which of course meant more fundamentalism and persecution of Sufis, and was attempted by ISIS in the contemporary era.

Unfortunately, the Saudi-Wahhabism link is very strong, and it's in Saudi Arabia that the holiest cities of Islam are.

From The Cambridge Companion to the Qur'an:

[Mahmud Muhammad] Taha expanded this theory and designed an exegetical model according to which the corpus of verses revealed in Mecca and the verses revealed in Medina were of a radically different character. The Meccan verses were the primary, timelessly valid revelation addressed to all humankind. As for the Medinan verses, they were revealed after the Prophet had established a political community in Medina; therefore these revelations had to compromise with existing socio-political circumstances and were not binding for all future societies. The point of this exegetical volte-face is that according to Taha the Meccan revelation taught the complete equality of sexes, the command to use exclusively peaceful means to spread the Muslim message, and the equality of all social groups, i.e., the abolishment of slavery and the freedom of physical punishment such as the amputation of hands. In Medinan verses, according to Taha, all of these principles had been diluted or abolished. But now the time had come to reinstate them. The subtext of this exegesis was the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of the United Nations promulgated in 1948. A number of states, in which Islam was the religion of state, had opposed this declaration because in some points it contradicted Islamic law, which was and is based among other things on certain Medinan verses of the Qur'an. The radical revisionist approach of Taha would have left little room for the sharia. He was convicted of apostasy and executed by a Sudanese court.

tl;dr THERE'S NO POINT OF THE ALL THE SURVIVING LIBERALS, MODERNISTS AND REVISIONISTS ARE ALL HERE, THE HOLIEST CITIES AND THE MOST AUTHORITATIVE SCHOOLS OF ISLAM ARE NOT IN EUROPE
>>
>>1592064
Here's my program for a successful Islamic "reformation":
1. Treat the Medinan surat like Christians treat most of the Old Testament, particularly the most violent bits.
2. Treat the ahadith like the Hindus treat the Vedas ("They're sacred, but we really get our religion from other sources!")
3. Treat the fiqh like Jews treat the exegetical work of Philo of Alexandria.

This will never become mainstream in Islamic countries during this Century.

A successful reformation needs to become mainstream in at least one large Islamic country of North Africa or the Middle East.

We need DIVINITY SCHOOLS OVER THERE to produce more and more scholars that are not cunts.

WE NEED OUR SCHOLARS THAT SPEAK ARABIC TO WANT TO GO THERE AND LEARN THIS REFORMED ISLAM IN A FUCKING ISLAMIC COUNTRY.

OR ELSE THERE'S NO REFORMATION, AND IT'S JUST LIBERAL ISLAM IN EUROPE, WHILE AFRICA AND THE MIDDLE EAST REFORM IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION, AS THEY DON'T WANT ANY OF THAT "WESTERN" ISLAM.

An Islamic reformation either happens from within the lands of Islam, or it does not happen at all. For the time being, Wahhabism and ISIS ARE the Islamic reformation. You're welcome.

>>1591455
Strasserism was a more radical, more socialist faction of national socialism. Its founders were the Strasser brothers, with one of the supporters being Röhm, Hitler's right hand man. Strasserits supported a revolution that would bring a new, more socialist order. They opposed jews more because they saw them as capitalists than for their heritage. Their opposition to the more "moderate" ranks led to their demise, with a large part dying out during the Night of the long knives, when the conservative wing took over completely.

mass political activism of the labour unions would need a strong warlike culture and close community ties and bonds. you'd have heavy protectionism and a citizenry trained, educated, lead in self suffeciency & a good work ethic.

Spain would be a true falangist(fascist) nation.
>>
I can see him and Franco disputing power after they had crushed the republicans, prolonging the civil war.

I can see Spain participating in WWII and getting BTFO, occupied and a ally puppet regime being put in his place after the war, one that would enforce globalism and mass immigration, with nationalist and right-wing parties being outlawed. So basically not much would change.
>>
>>1591494
If the civil war were prolonged then why would Spain join WWII?
