Let's have a thread about lao tse. What do you think of his philosophy?
7 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Philosophical Taoism for me is difficult to grasp, but what I can grasp of it makes a lot of sense, and seems to suggest a good course towards a rich, peaceful life. I can see in it ideas that I've seen elsewhere (specifically Stoicism, Christianity, and even The Ego and Its Own), but presented with a reasonable course for personal growth and fulfillment.

As for Lao Tzu's philosophy specifically, it provides a very barebones framework from which to work with, what little there is quite rich and meaningful, but also difficult to envision in a practical context. I feel Chuang Tzu helps put it into more useful terms.
>>
>>1599049
I forgot: the concept of the Tao itself helps round out my own cosmological views, as I feel it works well with basically conception of the divine (I favour pantheism myself). The Tao is that greater principle that allows there to be form and logic to the world, as well as form and logic to the divine.

When theists talk about the question of God being unable to to create a rock so heavy he could not lift it because to do something contradictory would be against his nature, I believe what they are talking about is the Tao that is necessary for God to be at all.

RCIA says that the Catholic Church and the Orthodox are both on a ship bound for heaven, but that the Catholic Church is looking forward, whereas the Orthodox are looking backward.

What does this mean? Can a Catholic help?
4 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Not a Catholic, but from what I gather they're saying that the Catholics seek an active and forward role in the world, and desire to include other groups of people into the Church, whereas the various Orthodox churches are focused on maintaining strict traditional adherence. This was certainly true in the early days, back when Catholic truly meant "all inclusive." A good example of this today is the mission of the Jesuits, who are sent out to various groups of people to try and work out how the Catholic faith can apply to their traditional beliefs, then converting them. All in all, the Catholic Church is focused on spreading its influence through religious missions and charities, while the various Orthodox churches are focused on preventing their traditions from becoming corrupted.

Makes sense, thanks.

This is a really great explanation, thanks anon.

It's rare to see people give really good informative answers on this board instead of just arguing off assumptions or whatever they can pick up off the wikipedia page, so good job making the board a better place.

I think the first sentence is important too though. There's simply way too much division presented between Christian denominations on this board, for tiny reasons. You're not going to go to hell or not based on if you cross left to right or right to left.

Who had a better life; an average citizen in Han China or an average citizen in the Roman Empire?
4 posts and 1 images submitted.

Roman. The vast majority of people's under Roman rule where ruled indirectly through local representatives at least until they would be converted to a more Roman style of life and learned Latin.

Han China was only really good for the aristocracy. Most normal people lived lives of serfdom. Whilst they had some liberties in market the government was very invasive in their personal affairs.

Roman.

Before Caracalla, the roman citizen. After Caracalla, the han citizen.
Mind you, I'm comparing both roman citizens to the average han citizen, not to han citizens before and after Caracalla, the Han was a turbo shithole of civil war and famine by the end of the 2nd century.

Peri is often considered one of the earliest figures in Baroque music, or a transition between Renaissance and Baroque.

To my ears it sounds a lot like medieval music mixed with Baroque. It's very, very beautiful.

not about a specific culture of people or time period so to speak..but
>the ancients were stupid

i always felt superior to them because i had access to greater things, considered them a bunch of primates and hand wipers.

but i kind of understand now how logic hasn't changed one bit, people are still try hards in relation to image as they were throughout history, people are still insistent on their opinions on everything as they were throughout history, people are still arrogant in relation to a plethora of reasons and motivations as they were throughout history etc etc

so all in all, only thing that truly has changed are is the technology and conveniences

Oh yeah, I forgot that Germany won the war.
>>
>>1598052

Not him, but Harris pretty openly advocated Trenchardian "Bomb them until their government collapses, you don't need ground troops" plans.

That did not work: Germany had to be occupied to defeat it. Bomber Command sucked up huge resources which could very probably have been put to better use. He also was a stuanch opponent of selective economic targeted bombing, viewing that as a "panacea", it's really only when the USAAF had enough planes in the theater to independently pursue objectives without the RAF that you got things like, "hey, maybe we should bomb their oil", which was absolutely devastating. Harris consistently vetoed proposals like that for his own people.

Why were brothels considered acceptable at a time when America was far more devoutly Christian than it is today?
5 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
The 1920s and 1930s were much more sexually liberal than people think, at least in the U.S.
All of the "muhgeneracy" repression didn't start until after WWII.
Look up the Roaring '20s and Pre-Code Hollywood.

I also have my doubts as to whether or not society as a whole was significantly more devout back then.
Sure, you had stuff like prayer in schools, but it seems to me that most Americans were "Christmas & Easter Christians" rather than the whole country being hardcore fundies.

The idea that mainstream America is extremely devout seems to come from Cold War backlash against "Godless Communism" (stamping God on everything_ and then the "Religious Right" reacting against growing secularization in the 1960s and 1970s.

Pre Sexual revolution, you had a much greater social application of the Madonna-Whore dichotomy. Not that it's entirely disappeared, but prostitutes were "Those" kind of women, and they weren't really that important, were they? And if a guy had to go to them, well, you know, you have urges, and a good girl isn't going to put out until you're married, and who knows how long that will take?
