If Eastern Europe is such a shithole with inferior races and infrastructure, why is it fought for so bitterly?

Many of world history's largest battles were fought in Eastern Europe for control of what people largely claim as useless, from Napoleon's invasion to the Eastern Front of WWI and WWII, the Crimean War and the Great Northern War.

if the land truly is that godforsaken and worthless, why do Germans, Swedes, Russians, and Poles fight over it so bitterly? to the point where it becomes a viable option to physically exterminate the ethnic groups living there multiple times throughout history?

Hey /his/ im from /tg/ and need some help on world building for a setting and game.

Given an alternate history where during the ice caps quickly melt and London is drowned during the mid 16th century.

1. How fucked are the British with their government decapitated?

2. Would the Irish have enough organization and reason to try and invade the remnants of England?

3 If the Irish did invade would they spare Whales and Scotland or just fight them too?

4. Would any other european power try to take Britain or would they be to busy with their own flooding to bother?
