Some of the finest diplomacy. For example, when Napoleon invaded Italy, they provided support to the french. He then intended to reward them with a corridor to the sea, but the sammarinese diplomats graciously refused, arguing that this would be unmodest and, paraphrasing, that it could come around to bite their ass in time.
Sure enough they were right: when Napoleon was defeated, they suffered no reprimand for their actions, as they had refused the unrightful proposal.
This is merely an example, but when you think than they basically had to weave so skillfully over their entire (pluri-secular) existance just to survive, you really gotta take your hat off to that.

I could not give a single fuck about king whothefuckcares declaring war on the guys over the hill, but I'll trade a kidney for information on how they made weapons and armour, what crops they grew, how they built their boats and how they designed roads and canals.

Planned economy fucks up agriculture really hard.
Soviet Union early problems with food were caused by forced collectivisation, which was extremely unpopular in most fertile regions of the country (Ukraine, namely). They later tried to solve these problems by starting several ill thought out agricultural reforms (pic related) and while later periods of Soviet Union saw no famines access to "luxury" foods was indeed scarce.
If a kolkhoz had a plan to produce X tones of grain or vegetables this year, but it was a really good year and they accidentally produced more, they'd just bury the excesses because they knew next year the plan would be raised to accomodate this increase and they had no guarantee that they could reproduce it.
Adding to the problem is the fact that population was steadily migrating to cities, world famous commieblocks were originally planned as temporary housing for all the new migrants from rural areas.

They did, however Buffalo bills show exaggerated a lot of the elements people associated with the "Wild," West. Cowboys were poor dudes trying to make a buck herding Cows. The occupation has been mythologized by Hollywood for entertainment purposes.
