Some of the finest diplomacy. For example, when Napoleon invaded Italy, they provided support to the french. He then intended to reward them with a corridor to the sea, but the sammarinese diplomats graciously refused, arguing that this would be unmodest and, paraphrasing, that it could come around to bite their ass in time.
Sure enough they were right: when Napoleon was defeated, they suffered no reprimand for their actions, as they had refused the unrightful proposal.
This is merely an example, but when you think than they basically had to weave so skillfully over their entire (pluri-secular) existance just to survive, you really gotta take your hat off to that.

And how they convinced Mussolini to not invade them ?

They were fascist and remained neutral during the war, and it's not enough of a treat or a strategic asset to bother invading during a world war.

They helped the unifiers on the condition that they not be part of the unification.
No, literally, that's what happened.

Very small countries are simply allowed, or permitted to continue to exist by their far larger neighbors, in much the same way as many animal species are allowed by mankind to continue to exist.
If we wanted to, we could just as easily bring a de facto end to the existence of the State of San Marino, as we could render certain threatened species extinct overnight if we chose. But we don't do these things, partly as historical accident, partly out of vague moral considerations, and partly each entity is (relatively) harmless to us as a species, in the grand scheme of things.
