Now the political situation in the south was to say the least, EXTREMELY complex and shady, the sources are more clear the later the date, so the early rise of the Cholas is mostly derived of temple inscriptions and Hero Stones (Virakal) that described victories and deeds.

The ownership of Thanjavur prior to Chola subjugation is apparently with the Pandyan tribe of the Muttaraiyar, apparently there was a war in 852 AD when the Cholas captured Thanjavur and deposed Sattan Paliyilli the Muttaraiyar king of the city. Apparently this was due to the Cholas being vassals to the Pallavas and the Muttaraiyan a Pandyan feudatory.

Either way this marked the rise of the Cholas as a serious power in the south and the fact made the Pandyan king Srimara Srivallabha extremely uncomfortable as he was campaigning in Sri Lanka. He ordered his subordinate Pallava King Nandivarman II(846-869 AD) to attack the Cholas, but this was not heeded. Apparently this led to the Cholas becoming more brazen in their attacks against other Pandyan feudatories.

The Cholas under Vijayalaya grew ever bolder as the Pallavas allowed them to retain the lands conquered and grew their armies. During this time, the Pandyas withdrew from Sri Lanka and tried to concentrate their efforts in the North against the Pallavas and their resurgent allies, the Cholas.

Srimara Srivallabha gathered his forces and went north to challenge the Pallavas, but in the south in Sri Lanka, the political situation had changed.

You see Srimara Srivallabha had led the Pandyas in Sri Lanka and defeated the then ruler Sena I According to the Pali text Culavamsa "the great army of the Pandyan king swept over the large crowd of Sinhala soldiers and crushed them, moving like Mara's army. And the Sinhala king, hearing that his army had surrendered, took up all his portable wealth and fled the city, heading toward the mountains." Culavamsa 50.19-20.

While campaigning against the Pallavas in 862 Sena the Second, son of Sena I launched a daring attack on the Pandyan Capital Madurai, which was largely undefended due to the forces being recalled north was sacked.

While in the north the Srimara Srivallabha's army was faced by a massive confederate army of Cholas and Pallavas. The news of the sacking of Madurai badly affected the morale of the Pandyan troops and they were decisively defeated at Arisil.The Pandyan army retreated in disorder as their king was wounded, and he later died of his wounds in 862. While in the south Sena II installed a king of his own choice named Varagunavarman II 862, but by this time it was certain that Pandyan power was on the decline and the Pallavas were on the rise along with their allies Cholas.

Cholas were now slowly becoming propserous and were training and expanding their armed forces, veteran captains were apparently given land in and around the rich Thanjavur area and the fertile land at the banks of the Kaveri were cleared for massive irrigation and farming projects to enrich the population.
