/g/, I need a need a new laptop - specifically a convertible with pen support, something that can handle 3D modelling (esp ZBrush sculpting) and play modern games every now and then without running too much like a piece of shit. I also have about $1700 to waste.
So as far as I've found, the Thinkpad P40 Yoga seems to look pretty good, although I'm curious if there's anything else that might be better.

Tech printer question.
We got a problem here at my workplace, Network printers gets jammed by someone or something trying to send some huge or invalid document that locks down the printer, when printer is rebooted it may print a page or two and then locks down again.
So my idea is that a computer "emulates" a network printer, set the computer to the IP of the printer and grab all the invalid documents and let them go through, then change back to the printer and the problem is gone for now, would any of this be possible?
Sounds pretty easy, write a small script that listens om 9100, checks the print and forwards them to the real printer

>What is a print server?
>>56125309
i want to grab the prints so the computers thinks they successfully printed, so those print jobs gets removed from the queue.
>>56125570
We have safecom as a print server, we have around 4000 computers and around 150 printers, like 4-5 times a year this happens to a printer and we have no better way of solving it then removing it and adding it with a new IP.

Because I'm using a Pentium III.

nope

yeah, those texas instruments CPUs sure are great

I have a jewtel CPU right now but you bet your ass when Zen drops I'm dropping jewtel for good
What do you think /g/ cryengine or unity?
-pic unrelated
in what regard?
install gentoo
I've only ever used Unity so I'll say use that like some fanboy
>He fell for the Micro-ATX meme
It is really a meme.
They seem to be somewhat higher price, and even rarer if you need something a year old.
Then ATX models seems to be much more available.
>>56124632
Micro Center always used to have CPU-Mobo combo deals where they throw in a μATX mobo for like $10.
>>56124632
didnt they used to be popular before itx got powerful?
I wanna buy my bf a much newer laptop for his birthday, but he primarily uses Linux.
What modern laptops run Linux flawlessly?
Lenovo Thinkpad
DELL XPS 15 - developer edition
My temps of my CPU in the notebook have been shooting up recently.
I have applied thermal paste last year around.
I might have catched some malware.
Up to now I have only used Microsoft Essentials and Spybot Search&Destroy.
They find nothing.
Any recommendation of a lightweight scanner?
If nothing helps, I am gonna unscrew this notebook, which is quite some hassle and check the thermal paste.

Trying to block boards.4chan.org/gif/ in hosts file. Added the address properly but it can still be accessed.

Hosts files only works for domains. Retard.

Are you in your nofap period?
i want to know why it does not get blocked actually, i would have given up if not for curiosity. Only for domains...so any alternatives?

Yes, that's me.
I'm looking to build a computer, mostly for games. I have barely enough desk space for a Pavilion Slimline and a low budget. I don't play games that require more than 4gb of ram and a radeon 5450 (I would like to play duke nukem forever but it runs like ass), but I would like an upgrade. Should I build a mini ITX, or are they overrated?
how can they be overrated or underrated, they are cheaper and have less expansion slots and it's generally harder or impossible to fit custom coolers on them so they're typically louder and hotter, but it'll do fine. pick a cpu with a low tdp, dont oc it, have a few case fans, and you wont have a problem
>>56124315
micro atx is the sweet spot if you wanna go small.
>>56124315
Mini-ITX builds are not over-rated, but be sure you have the budget for one. They can get pricey depending on your demands.
Alternatively, if what you're saying is true, an APU-based machine may do everything you want currently just fine. And those can come in incredibly tiny cases and setups, prebuilt.
Has anyone ever thought about getting one of those PC On a Sticks, stripping the case off, and mounting it inside a homemade laptop case?
It's a damn small PCB, and aside from some kind of HDMI to display board and a small power board, you'd have so much space left for batteries even in something the size of a netbook.
Am I wrong, or would this be a nice way to make a cool little laptop with heaps of battery life?
Also, talk about other cool modding/hacking ideas you've seen or thought of.
>>56124278
i want to buy arduino and make some awesome christmass light display
>>56124278
A lot of Chinese Laptop makers do this. They stick super-underperforming Atom/ULV single-board monstrosity into a cheap plastic case, stuff it full of lithium polymer cells and whatever was the cheapest TN display they could find, claim it has a 20-hour battery life, and sell it.
But seriously, they're the worst laptops in the world. They can't do shit because atom/most ULV processors today are actually huge pieces of shit still, they catch fire/blow up because they're using barely/if-at-all protected cells in a case with no ventilation (because no-fans is another selling point), and they falls apart when you look at them wrong because cheap chink build quality.
A lot of chink tablets are like this as well. Some are alright, others are massive piles of dogshit.
Now, if you wanted to take a compute-stick and stick it into the casing of a monitor/Tv, and make a make-shift, VESA-mountable All-In-One/Smart TV, that'd be sorta cool. In fact, that's an entire that would actually make money. Preinstall some tools for screen sharing/mirroring from another LAN PC, media sharing, and similar, and you're good.

Why not just buy an ideapad 100s?
Anyone here using BTRFS?
>>56124247
yup, and except a lot of (supposedly harmless) "BTRFS error (device sdXY): could not find root 8" on boot everything is working fine
the snapshot feature saved my ass when doing a release upgrade of ubuntu, power went off in mid-upgrade and the system was unbootable, recovered the snaphost from a livecd, very cool
>>56124280
Cool, thanks.
I'm just wondering wether to use btrfs or lvm, which also supports snapshots.
Bumping with random funny stuff.
Do windows slow overtime or this is just a meme? I've never noticed an increased slowness. Is this because I know how to use computers?
>>56124184
probably because you dont do shit on it
>>56124184
Meme, for the most part. Happens to users who click and install every shit they find online advertised as speeding up their computers. Some slowdowns (though negligible) might occur due to registry database increase and/or fragmentation. Though, again, it's negligible. I have WIn7 installed since like 2012 and runs just fine.
Yes. After a year the performance will be at 50% so I recommend reinstalling 2-3 times a year.
