Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™
Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

To you guys who actually work in Software Developent, Quality Assurance, etc, Do you guys prefer to use a really powerful modern computer, or an older computer that you can still do your work on but not waste time gaming with?
I lately find myself being much more focused when using a 2008 era machine vs a 2015/6 era machine

what kind of dillema is this. Just don't play the games then.

Well, fuck. Looks like it's time to nuke Windows 10 for good and switch to Linux
What's a good place for someone like me, who has very little knowledge about Linux to start?
Is Ubuntu good for beginning?
I like Fedora Cinnamon spin
Looks like... SOMETHING HAPPENED!
avoid distros that utilize systemd
just tried emacs, didn't have a very good experience
the hotkeys were unintuitive and I had to pause to think what to do
not to mention the program itself is bloat, and installs useless crap like gtk and adwaita icons
I don't understand how some of you praise this program
pls explane to me
>>57209797
It's really good once you get used to it. Take a built-in tutorial, use it for a few days - you might like it. "Bloat" is a meme, and emacs has much less than some modern garbage like Atom.
>>57209797
>useless crap like gtk
OK child, you can go play with tiling window managers in your useful arch system.
you have to take the time to learn the hotkeys, if you do you'll never look back
also emacs does a lot more than editing text, it can even be used as a web browser now
I am weeb.
I like the default marshmellow look.
Removed search bar and made the app grid 5 x 9 to make the wallpaper changer widget smaller
I like the overall look

Good for you, I guess? I mean seriously, who cares?
Wow, this was supposed to be on the homescreen thread
My bad
okay?
i went to Goodwill today to buy a exercise bike.
i bought 2 cookies as well.
then went to Home Depot and bought 10 lawn bags, 15ft white power cord.
then i went to HEB (grocery store) and bought food for the week. mainly breakfast food because i already bought meat last Thursday.
i then came home and washed clothes.
Why is the only good video editing software on Mac?
>>57209546
Because it was always considered as a platform for multimedia works.
>>57209546
Because it's the only platform capable of delivering the quality api needed for such software
>>57209546
because Final Cut 7 used to dominate the market, then Apple pissed everything away and everyone stayed for the Adobe Suite

KERNEL VULNERABLE SINCE 2.6.22 DIRTY COW BUG LETS ANY USER GAIN ROOT
HOLY SHIT! LINUX CONFIRMED FOR CRAPWARE, HOW ARE LINKEKS EVER GONNA RECOVER FROM THIS?
>This is an ancient bug that was actually attempted to be fixed once (badly) by me eleven years ago in commit 4ceb5db9757a (“Fix get_user_pages() race for write access”) but that was then undone due to problems on s390 by commit f33ea7f404e5 (“fix get_user_pages bug”).
>In the meantime, the s390 situation has long been fixed, and we can now fix it by checking the pte_dirty() bit properly (and do it better). The s390 dirty bit was implemented in abf09bed3cce (“s390/mm: implement software dirty bits”) which made it into v3.9. Earlier kernels will have to look at the page state itself.
