So, a paper from NASA on the em drive was reviewed and they proved it indeed generate thrust. It's 1.2mN, which is much lower than fuel powered rockets but at the same time hundreds of times better than solar sails. With this drive, powered only with electricity, getting to mars would be only a matter of days.

What does /g/ consider as a first goal after obtaining this kind of technology? Would it make spacex's rockets obsolete? Will we become a space faring species in our lifetimes thanks to this?

Would rockets using meme drive actually have giant batteries instead of fuel for powering this?

Huge ass batteries or a nuclear reactor to get off the ground.

Probably solar panels for out in space.

Stupid things anon did with VirtualBox?
197 posts and 28 images submitted.
>>
I do, yes. Thank you for asking.
Trying out different distros, mostly. I used to be a rampant hopper--well I still am, I guess--until I told myself to just create a VM. The same thing happens in a VM that would've happened if I'd installed the distro on metal: I get bored after a day and want to try something else.

So what stupid things have I done with VirtualBox? Enabled my own mental illness, for one.

No, I use VMWare Workstation though.

AMD literally never said this.
It was consumers overhyping once more. an unfortunate byproduct of AMD keeping tight lips.

All AMD ever confirmed was that Zen had hit the targetted 40% IPC increase over Excavator. Which would put it at around Devil's Canyon levels depending on clocks.

Man, I really want a Grand Seiko.... Nobody will know how much that costs. Most people would not know the difference between a grand seiko and a Sarb, but they are so pretty and I know the difference.

Such a subtle elegance.

Each year, boards across the site vote on and ask whoever they want to take to the "winter ball", and people make art or stories (cutes or lewds) for the "date".

Hi guys writefag back form last night, went to bed before I could work. I wanted to clear up some things on the suggestions I got last night. Also I'd like some pics of each board-tan, mannerism, some memes you guys would like to see and find funny things like that.

I get being traps, but is there any back story on why each board is a trap? The more detail the better I can make a story the boards will be happy with. Also I'll have to look into Maki since I've got no clue who she is aside from pictures last thread.

As for this one is it a certain board? or is that a combination of the two?

>Is perl a language made specifically for autists by autists?
No, it was made in a time where C wasn't even standardised yet and Python would not be imagined for another 7 years. By that standard, Perl was objectively good.

>Why would you use perl when theres so many better alternatives?
Because you have legacy software you need to maintain but can't justify a complete rewrite.

Samsung is launching SSDs based on new 64-layer NAND over the next few months, so expect to see prices drop a lot on their current lineup. That also means that prices are going to fall out of the bottom on their competitor's drives. I was going to buy a new SSD last week, but the prices are falling so rapidly that I'm going to wait until the spring. I don't really need a new drive that badly right now anyway; it's just that my mechanical drive is the loudest thing in my system now.

Like the title says, I'm curious on thoughts about desktops compared to laptops. I've always thought that have a desktop for gaming was better, but as I get older I'm not playing as many games as I used to, nor are they necessarily the most technically intensive. Plus, my desktop has had a huge number of problems, probably due in part to moving back and forth for college. Combined with the prospect of replacing most, if not all of the parts, in the near future (the rig is coming on 5 years old, now) in order to keep up with stuff, I'm wondering if I wouldn't be better served just tossing the damn thing away and getting a laptop.

The main reason I'm asking is because I've been having some pretty significant computer problems recently, and I'm kind of dreading having to replace some of the more expensive or hard to reach components, like the motherboard or the GPU. And if those do turn out to be the cause of the problems, I'm probably looking at a pretty penny. I mean, if I'm going through the hassle anyway I'm probably not going to just get the same part I have now, right?

I don't know if I'm thinking about this the wrong way, so I wanted to get your opinions. Am I just way underestimating the cost of mid-range gaming laptops?

I also use my pc for art programs, but idk if that would be a huge factor or not.

You can get an office-used Sandy Bridge i5 desktop and slap a GeForce 1050 in it for about $200.

It'll outperform any gaming laptop until the $2,500 range, and you won't be stuck with a shitty built-in monitor/keyboard.

Normal laptop with good cpu and with an external GPU setup.

"Gaming" laptops are either overpriced as fuck or throttling machines.

I've got IPv6 working at home. Managing the firewall for the local network is kind of annoying.

My /64 is dynamic. How do I tell UFW or iptables to allow traffic from the local, directly connected subnet only, when that subnet prefix might change?

Windows Firewall has bultins to handle local traffic, but I'm having trouble finding the Linux equivalent. Any ideas?
