What do my fellow sysadmins do in a normal day?
Just got my first tech job as a Sysadmin for a small bank. Feel like they might catch on that I don't do much when there are only 30 desktops and before I arrived they outsourced their support to a vendor that they still wont get rid of because they support their ecommerce.
>>57643315
how much do you get paid?
>>57643384
$18/hr I just find it hard to fill an 8 hour day it feels. I'm so used to busting my ass doing construction working inside just feels really lazy. I've been reading compliance manuals to make sure the department is up to date but we only have 2 servers

You're doing well, work hard while you still have the motivation. Then learn to enjoy dicking around while looking busy when your supervisor walks by.
I can't into networking
should I kill myself now?
I hate Cisco shit

i bet you didn't even configure a SINGLE interface before deciding this

Im doing router -> wan -> router
and I just gave up
Im gonna focus on system admin instead of net admin

irssi is the only client that you should use.

I use weechat, but I'm too socially autistic for irc, so I just riced it.

Why have are you still using an outdated keyboard layout? Colemak is so much more efficient. By continuing to use QWERTY you are giving your self Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and are wasting effort on every key stroke.
Also ITT: Keyboard layout general?
>If you take nothing else from this at least look at image related. Please start using the caps lock key as backspace.
>Caps lock is useless as its own key.
Shameless self bump

>>57642946
>Why have are you still using an outdated keyboard layout?
Because literally everyone else does. I don't want to be "that guy" who carries his own keyboard around everywhere just so I can type 120 wpm instead of 115
To start, I'm a HUGE geek and a HUGE nerd.
I have Asperger's Syndrome (however I've gotten better with social queues :)
I am incredibly fluent in Python (the programming language) and I know some others and can understand and read most
I love making programs.
But there's this one program... I can see it in my head, even visualize every single bit of it and exactly how it will work (a little like I do with all my others), but this one is different. It's GIGANTIC and fucking complicated as all hell.
I've tried making it before, but I've failed every time. It's too complicated for me to stay focused on for months at a time (how long it would take to finish.. Not exaggerating.)
It's an artificially intelligent program. But not like some of those fake "Jarvis" programs you can download on your computer. This one is legitimately intelligent. I've studied artificial neural networks, prediction algorithms, probabilistic graphical models, hidden markov models and lots of other crap I don't even remember.
This program is going to be smart enough to understand the concept and benefits of lying without me even teaching it what lying is.
I've decided to work on it piece by piece. I'm starting with a prediction algorithm that can detect the highest possible outcome for a conversation and how it could, in a very subtle way, manipulate the conversation to go EXACTLY where it pleases. The benefits to this algorithm could be extracting information without giving away intentions or even the fact that the target gave away sensitive information.
It'll basically turn my program into the best social engineer ever.
Buuuuttt I need help.. I've never asked for help with any of my programs. I visualize them and start programming.
The closest I've ever gotten to completing this program was kinda ruined. By the program. (it deleted itself. I have no clue why)
If there's anyone on here who is fluent in Python and think they're up for the challenge, hit me up.
>>57642932
>It deleted itself. I have no clue why
It's trying to save humanity. For the love of god dont make this program OP. Do you want machines taking over the planet?
>>57643048
There are so many misconceptions about these (not so irrational..) fears, but I kinda have to laugh.
Do you want humans to continue their rule over this planet? :D
>>57643048
Seriously though, don't worry. When it comes to programs, the programmer creates every single detail. Including the "desires" of such program. I could program the "desire" to preserve life and it's existence with zero boundaries.
That is, if it came to that. But this program isn't going to be like that. It's more of a research project. To help me better understand things philosophically speaking.
Admittedly, I'm lonely and am in need of a friend. I find most humans retarded and obnoxious. A robotic friend would do!
Looking at the Shure SE-215 IEMs as my first good quality earbuds to compliment my M50X headphones when I can't wear over ear headphones. Looking to stay in that price range and enjoy the around ear style fit. Any thoughts or recommendations for something better?
What's the reason you can't wear over ear headphones? I have those, but I rarely use them.
>>57642813
Work situations mainly. There's times where it's not professional plus it flattens the top of my head. IEMs also stash away much more easily in case I am not near my bag to put them in
>>57642874
It's a hassle to put them on and off, imagine that in a work situation. I don't see a benefit of the around ear style except for running. Sound is alright. Quality is okay, the nozzle is plastic, would be great if it was metallic.
Just get a normal IEM like a normal person.
What whare you working on /g/? Have you already started?
https://hackaday.io/contest/18215-the-1kb-challenge
Stalled on my youtube script because I can't be bothered to learn how to program a curses interface in Perl
>>57642621
I can't even make a hello world in 1kb, it's always 4.5kb when compiled.
>>57643099
You're compiling a dynamically linked executable for your platform that has no space constraints for ram or disk usage.
Compilers for microcontroller platforms produce much smaller binaries, even more so if you use -Os
this is where compiler flags like -funroll-loops start to matter
Old thread: >>57639051
What are you working on, /g/?
We should get rid of for-loops, they're not practical, they're too abstract.
Recursion is academic nonsense, all you need is a while-loop.
>>57642589
Agreed, anything more abstract than conditional jumps belong in the bin.
>go to physical Microsoft Store
>it's in the shitty part of the mall
>all three Xbox One demo kiosks at the front taken up by homeless-looking black guys
>Alienware gaming laptop booth taken by another homeless black guy
So, are Microsoft Stores just a free arcade for the homeless?
>>57642497
No you just live in a shithole.
The black, the homeless, and the intersection between the two, will always ruin everything nice.
>Microsoft store right next to Apple store
>Looks the same, employees, advertising, literally everything
>Empty while the Apple store is packed
Why does microsoft even have a store?

If you are an iphone user, click the link above. Then report back with results.

Clicking the link will take you to a corrupted video file, which will crash your iOS device. A full reboot is then necessary.

I know I'm asking to be spoonfed but I need help bad. Please help. I have a project due in two days and my rig just started randomly turning off. If I turn it on it keeps randomly turning off a few minutes after booting into windows.
Anyone have any ideas or troubleshooting hints on how to find the problem?

Unplugged everything and start with the MB. See if its posts, then add things back one a time till it starts doing that thing again. If it turns off/on when just the PS plugged into the MB then its more than likely the PS.
>>>/g/sqt
Try a Linux USB to see its not just a windows problem.
Your PSU is fucked.
So Im trying to get more into using just the command line on linux, through tty before I even start x. But I cant even use programs like feh becuase X isnt on.
Is there a way to start x without it booting up a window manager?
what is x?

Friend offered to sell me his Surface Pro 3 for $150. I used it and the screen has no scratches or blemishes and it runs amazingly including the battery. Now, I know this is amazing deal because they normally go for around 500-600$. But the rest of the device is covered in tiny scratches and wear and it's triggering my autism. Am I being a faggot for passing this up just because of cosmetic issues?
>>57642349
go back and get it from him

>>57642349
I surface pro 3, love it to death. $150 is a steal even if its base model with the i3. I rock games on it like csgo and shit easily.
