It's time to admit it..
If you use any other distro than Ubuntu or Mint you're only doing it because you want to convince yourself you're smart.

Something about fox and grapes?
I want to use a supirior package manager aka portage
We had a few fun threads about this the last couple weeks and I'm only posting this because you seem legitimate and probably are wondering why people get into this shit.
Having a conversation with anyone using the dropout distros, or wannabe smart distros as you put it, is like having an internet chat conversation with someone who is really really really fat, but will perfectly never tell you this, but will let on the details.
>Well after I'm finished with dinner it's two hours later
>I usually spend a few hours in the hospital a month at least
when you talk to people like this, they legitimately have no idea why they are losers, and in this case it's that they have absolutely no idea about time. spending hours reading mailing lists every day works out if you absolutely, positively care not about your time in the first place, and it doesn't even register as a complaint for them. 5 minutes? 50000 minutes? there is no difference
The horrifying this is that deep down they do know about their condition and the real reason they have chosen this shit distro is because they really do know that if they didn't find a way to keep themselves busy, they will go insane. Which is why they will try very hard to not think about it.
It's a very complicated question that will puzzle you, which you can't answer until you've seen them, their situation, and the ulterior motives. It isn't about pretending to be smart, they woke up one day and basically were like, holy shit, what am I going to DO with all this time?

>One of the ex-Googlers further explains that Qualcomm prefers its business model on Android which, for the most part, is to “ship it and forget it.”
>Buying Qualshit SoC
>any year

The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus doesn't have this problem.
I don't even like qualcomm, but if microsoft is able to not only run windows on qualcomm, but emulate x86 programs as well, there's absolutely no excuse for google not to be able to port chromeos
>>58174756
Hmm, Windows 10 with no updates. I don't know what to think of this.

are they not though?
as someone who's used windows since the DOS days, typing in commands my dad would write on post it notes to play commander keen, going through win95 - win7 and all in all someone who is highly computer literate, let me offer you a pill that'll be hard to swallow.
the macOS DE is so much more sophisticated, so much more robust, functional, aesthetic, coherent and overall more powerful than any other OS that it really is unimaginable. I highly, highly urge you to build yourself a hackintosh this holiday season and spend a good 2 weeks with this DE. you will not regret it.

did u give up on pretending to use windows?
>not using GNOME
Are you even trying?
Is it????????
If you`re moderately competent with Linux, just throw together a computer and create some Samba shares.
Avoid freeNAS unless you never want to do anything else with that computer.
This >>58174995
Just get a old computer and set it up with Samba in Linux and whatever other server utilities that you want.
no, never buy dedicated nas boxes like that, theyre overpriced as shit.
>>58174995
this, but if you're a linux scrub its super easy too install windows server 2012 r2, or hell, even w7 and just share the hds.
How much RAM is enough?
Is 24GB enough?
if developers keep being aids and run their applications though web browsers, 24 gb won't be enough
>>58174482
>enough
This can only be answered by knowing how much you need.
256GB RAM is the least you should have in 2017.
What are you working on, /g/?

Are 144hz monitors a placebo meme made by normies to justify thier expensive purchases? Just like ssds and jewvidia cards?
>>58174228
144hz is great, but only really useful for games... and even then 99% of people who are buying them fucking suck anyway and a monitor isn't going to change that. do not buy unless you are in the top 0.1% of whatever game you play

ITT: Dumb tech shit you did/believed as a kid.
Almost everything my father "taught" me. Took me a long time to realize that he's a know-it-all and knows fuck all about tech.
For example he still believes that best way to treat batteries is to discharge them completely every time. And yes, we're talking modern cells not nicad

A 2.4ghz dual core was 2* 1.2ghz cores that combined into 2.4ghz processing power.
I always thought you can take a hdd and put it in a different pc and it would work
lol people actually buy after-market coolers
