>I'm new to electronics, where do I get started?

There are several good books that are commonly recommended for beginners and those wanting to learn more. There are also plenty of good Youtube channels that teach about the basics as well as advanced concepts. The best way to get involved in electronics is just to make stuff. Don't be afraid to get your hands dirty. Take something apart or build something you find cool on one of the many electronics websites.

Hi /diy/.

So instead of going out and celebrating the new year, I spent it melting down coke cans with some friends in a makeshift forge.

I don't really have anything to do with the ingots at the moment. Does /diy/ know a way to make some moulds?

The process usually involves 3d printing, making a negative mold with the 3D printed fugure, filling the negative with wax, get a wax positive and make a heat resistant negative with the wax positive. It's quite annoying.

sup /diy/ers, hulp, going round in circles here:

anyone use / recommend project/life management software? Reason im asking here specifically, what I'd mostly need is an organisational overview of various of various ongoing projects, eg.

(a) makes a folder with the project/applicable notes/research
(b) provides a simple (automatic) overview of wtf is in this folder
(c) on this simple (one page) project overview, you can add notes etc. - preferably, with an automatic datestamp

- other abilites maybe, simple grouping, crosslinking, eg - need parts? can add directly on project page, this then shows up in a summary of things to buy page, or similar.

Basically, just something simple - somewhere between a diary, notepad and Visio/Project, pref. HTML basis, if poss. - what I dont need personally are heavy-duty scheduling/financial elements etc. No problem if own-server based either, maybe WordPress template or forum adaption or something be OK, but, no online/cloud crap, like, none - simpler, the better, as well.

tldr, but any good/simple project management software for diyers recommendations? - sans financial/scheduling bollocks, etc. - PC pref. - much appreciated..

Well, I looked for something like this for a while and tried many alternatives (mostly mobile based apps) but in the end I found out that a simple xml worksheet was better suited for me. It's not complicated but it is color coded, constantly arranged by due date and some more
>>
>>758870
Yeah, starting to figure, throwing my own HTML app together maybe easier.. but, cheers for the reply (and bump) anyway, appreciated. Seen some intranet things would maybe do/be adaptable enough, but, nothing free/under $500 till now.

Anyone else - diy organisation software tip? - c'mon, I be drowning in disarray here ;) need to stop procrastinating, n git or-ga-nised.

In what ways has being /diy/-savvy helped you?
27 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
It hasn't. I have too many hobies and interests to get exceptional at any of them. Doing anything myself is a pain in the ass because I will always be missing the one tool or jig that will keep me from busting my knuckle, but I can just see the completed project ahead of me, so I power through and bust my knuckle and get it done
>>
It's helped in more ways than I can even fathom right now.

I've been my own mechanic for the last decade. Not only has this saved me on repairs and maintenance that I've needed, but it's also saved me needing repairs and being stranded like common idiots often are.

Something breaks in my house? If it's cost effective to fix it myself, I fix it and save a bundle. Sometimes it's not worth taking the time off work, or purchasing the tools, but when it is, I save thousands. When I pay a contractor, I don't get fucked over, because I know what I'm talking about.

These benefits spill over to my family and friends, which give me a damn good reputation, so when I need something from someone else, I get it.

I'm just a hell of a lot more effective person overall, because I understand the workings of most things I interact with on a daily basis.
>>
There is a feeling of incredible satisfaction when I fix or make something myself instead of paying someone else or buying it. Even if something takes me waaay longer than I thought, or I had to watch a ton of youtube videos, I always feel satisfied and don't feel like I wasted my time. And saving money rules. With building stuff like furniture, I have the choice to make the thing exactly as I want it. Not go into a store and have to settle for something that is what I want, but not exactly. Also, everytime I do something new I am learning a new skill so the next time that thing comes up I'll be able to handle it. DIY is the best. It blows my mind how other people aren't like this.

I want to attempt to build a computer out of integrated circuits in order to learn more about how they work, the problem is I have no clue where to start and what materials to buy. I realize I need a clock, somewhere to store instructions, and a breadboard to experiment with, but I don't know what else I'll need. Google has nothing for me, there's a few people who seem to have built them and I've seen a few videos of small 8 bit ones, but I wanted to go bigger. Anything you all could tell me to get me started.

Just stop.

This is a stupid way to learn how a computer works.

There's a reason people don't build computers from scratch, and that after investing the workload of ENIAC, they end up with a computer the size of ENIAC with the performance and reliability of ENIAC.

Go do a low-level Computer Architecture course, or at least read the notes from one.
>>
>>755210
The most important thing you'll learn from Computer Science (as opposed to Electrical Engineering) is that hardware and software are the same thing. Hardware is just software running on a single-purpose machine.

Turing Equivalence tells us that there is nothing hardware can solve that a Turing Machine (and therefore a general-purpose computer) can't.

This means that before you even think about building a computer in hardware, you should build one in software.

Go read Hennessy and Paterson, and build a machine in software. Simulate it at the register/memory level first, then go as far down as you feel is worthwhile.

Once you've done that, you'll realise that there's nothing to be gained from doing it in actual hardware, and that everyone that has done so has learned not about computers but about digital logic and soldering stuff together.

I'm trying to make myself one of these boards.

What I've done so far is I've taken a cheap board that I already had from when I was a kid which was pretty much just a thin sheet of what seems like bamboo with the grid drawn on it and some little knobs underneath it as legs.

I used that as the top since I already had it, and I grabbed an 8ft piece of cheap 1x4 and a sheet of plywood and made a box out of that like in the picture, than I grabbed some pre-made legs that I found and glued it all together.

I didn't do the best job putting it together. It's solid, but the corners weren't perfectly sealed, and it didn't look like one solid piece like I was hoping for. So I slathered it with a shit load of Elmer's wood filler and sanded it all down.

Now it was flat, but part gray around the corners, and part bright brown on the sides with a slightly darker brown top and bottom with brighter legs. So I mixed up some paint to match the color of the original cheap board as much as possible. This covered the grey and it all looked pretty good, except the wood was starting to look a little plastic-like.

I stained it all with a shitty 1 step stain and polyurethane which I should've thought more about before buying. Once it dried it looked way too shiny, and was still very sticky, so I sanded it down and got some good stain and some matte polyurethane.

I had a little trouble removing all of that first glossy coat, but I figure the matte polyurethane can cover it up. I stained it and the polyurethane is drying right now. I'm about add a second coat and will post a picture of it momentarily.

Here's the problem though, the color is great, and it's not as plastic-like as before, but the paint has almost completely hidden the grain of the wood, and it just doesn't look as nice as I think it could be.

But even if I sanded it back down to bare wood, the original wood colors can't be covered by the stain unless I get a much darker stain which I really don't want.

One more reference photo, this one is actually a little closer to what I was going for.

I'll go take some pictures of my board right now and post them after I get the second coat of polyurethane on there.

What are some uniquely good ideas in a certain culture or area for homes, especially pre-industrial revolution ones?

So far I have
>Roman/Spanish/Korean subfloor heating
>Persian cooling with wells
>Tropical wraparound porches for cooling
>Russian stove (pic related)
>Finnish sauna
>Japanese/turkish/Roman baths
>Turkic-Mongol yurts
>Tibetan dzongs
>Pueblo housing in the sides of mountains

I'm fascinated by any brilliant vernacular engineering.

Only good one listed.

>Persian cooling with wells
Wat?

>Tropical wraparound porches for cooling
Wat? I've been to Jamaica and it was humid as fuck even in the shade. Best to just use the ac to cool and dehumidify.

>Russian stove (pic related)
Smoke in my house? The heat that thing would generate in the summer? The cost of that wood compared to electricity or better yet gas? No thanks.

>Finnish sauna
Why? Not practical in the summer and a waste of space for most peoples backyard.

>Japanese/turkish/Roman baths
Absolutely disgusting. Unhygienic.

>Turkic-Mongol yurts
I've looked into this - they look awesome but are too expensive for a glorified tent. Waste of space with the rounded walls and the open design would be like living in a studio apartment.

>Tibetan dzongs
House on a hill? You just went full retard. Foundation issues, getting up there, no real backyard, no thanks.

>Pueblo housing in the sides of mountains
I've walked around an ancient one on vacation. It's cool but dat cave like humidity. Gross. Also no real practical way to pipe plumbing all the way up there, would be expensive.

By today's standards most of these are terrible ideas that's why they are not used anymore. Or they are too impractical or expensive for most peoples use.

Not OP but I studied Architecture and one of my history projects was done on the Persian Arg-e Bam Citadel. The citadel has large towers that catches the wind and channels it down over a pool of water which removes the sand/ dust from the air as well as cooling it before it enters the main parts of the structure.
1500 year old air-conditioning, not bad for sand monkeys.

>where should i start?
Google.
>what do i need?
Depends on the kind of beer you want to make and how large a batch you are shooting for.
>how do i make my beer not shite?
Practice.

Find a few guides on google/youtube and go over them. Generally if they appear super easy its because they make shit product or are complete garbage (like that one infographic that pops up here from time to time) Collect a list of materials. Come on back when that you have learned and ask any questions you have.
>>

http://www.northernbrewer.com

Their basic starter kit includes almost everything you need. You'll also want to pick up a hydrometer and wine thief. If you stick with their extract kits it's pretty hard to Fuck up. This is how I started about a year ago.
>>
>>747296
>where should I start
Search for a homebrew forum online or a homebrew club in your area. Think about what you want to make first, then ask them if a beginner can do it.
>what do I need?
It depends on what you are making, I assume you want to make beer. For beer you need (beside the ingredients) : a cooking pot , a fermentation vessel with a water lock, a lager tank (same as 2nd fermentation vessel) stirring spoon, measuring cups , few buckets (CLEAN ONES at least 2), filter, bottles + caps, free time ,food safe disinfectant.

for more fancy brewing: pH strips, thermometer(max tem =boiling point of water) cooling spiral (copper spiral that can be linked to a garden hose),a hydrometer other gear depending on beer type.
>how do I make my beer not shite?
Follow what the more practiced one say, learn from them, start of with one recipe that is known to work. Stick to known recipes until they work and you get a feel for the ingredients, after that you can start experimenting yourself.
Use decent yeast, not some shitty bread yeast or pathetic shit some people use. Some yeast strains can be expensive due to transport costs so buy them together with some other home brewers. (this wil not be needed the first few years)
buy quality , like with everything : garbage in garbage out.
work clean: this is important if you contaminate your batch you can ruin it, you want yeast to grow not bacteria.
WORK CLEAN
have fun, its a cheap way to get high quality beer. Sometimes it will turn out like shite but just try again better luck next time you will be happy you tried again. Its easier then it looks at first.

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you in the states.

I want to ask about building a cost effective float tank. I'm talking about more than just a plastic tub, but something with temp control for water and good air while sealing out light.

I have a small budget, so it doesn't have to be ghetto-craft, but I'm hoping to build something sound proof. So what do you say DIY? Anyone one here ever try this?

DIY means fixing and making things yourself, stepping away from the consumerism and throw shit away when it stops working.
What I want to know is some product lines that you only have to buy once, and properly maintained will last forever:

straight razors
Mag-lite
Imco-Lighter
Sidchrome
Yaesu
Opinel carbon steel knives number 8
nintendo gameboys
french knifes
swiss army knifes
Leatherman
Tornister "Affe"

What Brands do you find that last?
