I think you can with total-loss 2 strokes, if you can change the ignition timing. With small engines it's just a dynamo. There may be ventilation issues but that's minor.

The reason you can't do it with 4-strokes is because the valve order is basically fixed by the camshaft. Simple 2-strokes got no cams, just reed valves

"Modern" 2-strokes are closed-crankcase, and have tappet valves (with a camshaft). Stuff like (US) marine/outboard engines--but then, none of them are cheap $$$$$$$$

You can still drive *vintage* road-legal 2-stroke cars and motorcycles in the US, but nothing sold now with a 2-stroke is street-legal.

The last motorcycle that is legal is a Yamaha 2-stroke ricebike, from 1982 I thinks?... a long time ago. And the last car was even earlier, late-1960's / early-1970's I think.

Not really impressed so far with the wiring job

Yes, you can wire a gx24 socket with standard 110v. The socket will give you instructions for wiring the socket to mains voltage.

To complete this project safely you'll need

soldering iron w/ solder
heatshrink
lighter
enclosure

and possibly
connectors + crimp

mains electricity shorting out, while looking really awesome like electrical fireworks, can easily start a fire. You don't want to be that asshole.

Well here goes. I'm looking for a tool / drill attachment that I could use for routing a hole 1" deep by 2" across. Any idea what I might need to ask for? Don't want to make a fool of myself when I go shopping later.

A 2in forstner bit would be the easiest. But you'd need money and a powerful drill press.

Otherwise a router and a circle jig is really the only practical, accurate way.

That is because they are far easier to use that way.

The practical problem with using devices such as loupes is that-
1) for a given objective lens size,
2) as the magnification of the lens assembly increases,
3) the depth of field decreases. As it must. There is no way around that.

The reason that a typical 30x loupe requires you to hold stuff 10mm in front of it is because the depth of field can be much less than 1mm. If the focal range is set very close to the objective lens, then you can brace your hand against your face, and hold the item at the proper distance to see it clearly. If the focal range was set out 200mm from the objective, you'd never be able to hold anything in focus.

UNLESS.......

you had the loupes fixed on a stand, and you had a stage that sat at the proper focal range distance.... which is what these things are:

There are cheapo ones for ~$50, but they are not built anywhere near as well as the $500 ones are....
And IIRC, Barska (that link) is a cheapo Russian optics brand. Comparable models from Swift, Zeiss, Nikon ect will cost way more than $500.
I'd expect to pay at least $200-$300 for a single-power set.

If you want to work at arms length a webcam with macro lens and monitor is probably the cheapest solution.

You can get these with different strength lenses. Lower power will let you work farther away. Higher power gives better magnification but you need to hold work close to be in focus.

screens in many of the major VR headsets are indeed cell phone screens. you should start with a phone with high ppi and remove the screen and figure out how convert its input into HDMI

I set one up to work as a radio in my room. There's nice aesthetics on some of those, especially when you prefer analog radios to digital ones for that comfy feel. Mine in particular is a Sherwood CRD-90; I can't even find a picture of that online. It makes it feel really personal.

Keep your eyes open for a Phillips DC-777 (DIN style) automobile radio. It's an early 1990's vintage unit. It was one of the rare dashmount radios that was AM/FW & Shortwave.

You'll need to either add wheels or replace the rear ones with some kind of axle setup. At the simplest you could have a gear mounted on the axle with a matching worm coming from the engine.

A gearbox of some sort is really your only option without modifying the engine to have some kind of throttle control. A small used tranny could be picked up for relatively cheap at a local junkyard, or a throttle body even cheaper.

Not a problem. Before you go out and drop $100 on a tranny though, make sure you can fabricate some kind of coupler to connect the two. It should also go without saying that you'll need a manual one unless you're a master at electromechanical wizardry.
