Okay so im looking at installing a heat pump in my house and maintaining it myself. How feasible is this? what would be the most commin / simple unit?

Im located in NZ so it would have to adapt to that climate and location would be relevant to make availability I guess.
Would i have to get a professional in?

Seeing as you're having to ask if suggest you're not capable and would save yourself a lot of time, money and embarrassment by paying someone to do it professionally.
>>
>>937404
I'd suggest*
>>
>>937373
It's not that hard, they are just two units to mount appropriately, as long as you are fine running the cables you'll struggle to fuck it up. I'd still get someone to do it, cost me $1,700 for my unit + installation, heats a 100m2 house pretty well

This thread is for the discussion of design methodologies and how you approach your design process.

For example I have had a dilemma recently where I am in the process of designing a multi purpose device but cannot decide what the primary purpose/use of the device will be(for multiple reasons).

So in short - let's talk about challenges we have faced during our design and mock up phases and how we overcame these since we all know that adequate planning goes hand in hand with a well thought out final product.

the purpose of multi purpose devices is to display it in the bottom of the cupboard somewhere.

design something that does one job well. then add features. the multitool for example. it's a pocket knife. who doesnt need a pocket knife? but then you get a trade off over time between how useful carrying around a fucking toothpick and rope cutter and bottle opener really is. but then there is the market for a real all in one tool.

so tell us OP, who do you think will buy your multitool and for what purpose?
>>
Use case should dictate design, not just some unfocused desire to make a thing.

List what it is to be able to do. That won't compromise your IP, and since multipurpose devices will suck at most tasks you can get some input on how to distribute the suckage to best advantage.

Consider multitools. They suck, but they suck less than not having a tool. Users select based on their personal task priorities. I for example most need pliers, cutters, knives and screwdrivers. A multitool can be with me when my shop is not, or at hand to save travel to get a tool.

I want to start a mealworm farm for making edible mealworms.

Has anyone else tried this? Is it financially and temporally feasible to grow mealworms as a food source?

Edible by whom?

Also: https://news.stanford.edu/pr/2015/pr-worms-digest-plastics-092915.html

Mealworms are easy. Get a stock of them plastic tubs and feed them.

The biggest problem I had with them is harvesting them for my chickens. Theres no real easy way to do this. So i switched over to BSF since they harvested themselves for me
>>
>>936525
Edible by me and maybe other people. I am interested in breeding them for food as they have a good protein profile and are nutritious.

What is BSF?
>>
>>936531
it's a type of fly larvae.
To feed chicken.

Just carve it the size you want it to be. Then put the stone seed of your choice right in the center of the receptacle. Add a tiny bit of manure, and wait until it grow the perfect shape.

Building a raised vegetable garden with 2x12s can I used treated wood or will that put chemicals in my plants?
34 posts and 7 images submitted.
>>
>>935971
Older/reclaimed ones, absolutely will. newer ones, some but almost certainly nontoxic amounts. my suggestion/plan is use untreated wood (if budget allows track down crappy cedar at lumberyards, resaw, and use to line structural pine). Or you can line with PE plastic (cheap source is dollar store painter's tarp).
the key is trying to minimize the moisture sitting against the wood. Pine will probably last about 2 years without needing to be replaced, cedar 5-10, even without any other steps.

charring the surface of the wood will also help prevent rotting.
>>
Avoid treated wood if possible but it won't be a deal breaker. Go to your local junk yard and ask if they have scrap lumber, might be able to find enough to build your beds for half the cost of using quality lumber. After all you're just going to pile it with dirt and shit and water, no need to get premium locust from a lumber supplier.

Stone knapping has been a meme for at least 3.3 million years and Humans weren't even the first ones to start it. We are like the newfags of evolution spouting oldfag memes every time we do flint knapping. Of course we are shit at it and if the oldfags were still around it'd piss them off to no end.
>>
>>935175
its more to do with the type of rocks. most australian aborigines never learnt to knap for example. wrong kind of stone here. you need very fine grained glass or soft fine grained stone. otherwise your options are limited.

Are you asking where to buy lumber? I'm not sure where you are, but for the US, there's big box stores like Lowe's and Home Depot that sell wood. Nothing special but it's something. I is it supposed to be decoration? If you need help on this stuff, we're gonna need more details.

/diy/ I need your help!

This is an easy one, I guess...
I recently started building circuits for fun and I am actually really bad at it, I guess.

I have got this RGB LED:
http://files.voelkner.de/175000-199999/185388-da-01-en-FULL_COLOR_RGB_LED_KLAR.pdf

And I have the following problems:

1. How am I supposed to know what colors are on which pin, with the help of this manual? The figures on the first page are showing the 6 pins, and I think pin 5 and 6 are GND. Since the LED has 2x blue and 1x red and 1x green, the 2 pins that are labeled MB are blue, I guess? And logically G stands for green? So E = red? Am I right with my assumptions? How am I supposed to know for sure?

2. In the table "Electrical / Optical Characteristics at TA=25°C" it says that the blue light needs a forward voltage of 2.0 volts. Green needs 2.2 volts and blue 3.8 volts. But there are 2 times blue? Does every blue pin need 3.8 volts, or do I need to divide by 2 (every blue pin 1.9 volts)?

3. The LED is clear. In order to see the full color spectrum, do I need to use a diffused one?

I hope you can help me with my questions!
Thanks for reading.

>>
blue pins need 3.8v each
the chips inside should be close enough that it will look pretty white but if you look closely you might be able to pick out the individual chips
everything else is correct
e is probably efficient red or something.
the wavelength chart confirms mb and g are common sense.

Found a better datasheet with readable pin out.

http://docs-europe.electrocomponents.com/webdocs/1384/0900766b81384fe2.pdf

Some calculated resistor values to use with a 5v supply @ 15mA per LED
red = 200 ohm
green = 180 ohm
blue = 68 ohm

If you don't know enough about computers to make an informed decision, no amount of advice is going to cause you to make the right choice.

I've tried to help too many people with this same question, and it always ends up with them buying the HP because their relative/friend had a good one or something.

Fuck off.

Hey /diy.

Got Arduino Uno and TFT shield. Got a SD cardreader and got 2x iPhones (4 and 4S)

Both are totally functional except for the battery on the 4S, it also has it's glass front shattered (LCD is ok).
The 4's Power button is broken, the rest of it is fine and I have started cannibalizing it as you can see in pic related.

Have breadboard and cables for testing etc. Have LEDs and a few sensors knocking about too.

It is my intention to mod by bicycle and am thinking sound, lights (safety as well as for coolness). Retractable cable ports to plug in peripherals and I would like to have all the components "built into" the body of the bicycle (handlebars, frame etc).

Not sure what to do, if anything, with the display? Ideas, suggestions, tips, encouragement and flaming all welcome.

It's a NFC card reader that looks like one of those anti-theft gates at the mall.

It can scan multiple NFC cards a person is carrying when he passes through the gate.

No that's an RFID reader. NFC operates at very close ranges.

So obviously you need some way to energize the RFID cards, some way to receive the signal, and someway to process it.

/diy/nosaurs, I'm looking for an indoor house plant that is very hardy and quick to use liquid. I play a lot of online poker and keep knocking my Gatorade bottles over during long sessions. I cant just get up to piss. I've got to keep playing or lose my stack. I'm looking for a plant I can set next to my battlestation and use as a urinal. It does not need to handle excrement. Only urine. "Piss plant" in google only brings up batshit crazy claim for a hybrid coleus that's suppose to repel cats/ dogs from gardens. I need an indoor human urine variety.

tl:dr: I'm looking for a natural, indoor DIY urinal.

... how about you just put the lid on your piss bottles you filthy fucking animal?

Even if you get a plant or plants to use up the liquid, theyll quickly die off from the soil getting to hot and too salty.

There's a surprising amount of nitrogen and salt in your piss and that will build up to intolerable levels rapidly in a small plant pot.

P.s. you're fucking disgusting.
>>
How about instead of a plant you have a tube which pumps your urine to a toilet.
Bonus points for building one which can handle solid waste.
Never leave your desk again.
>>
OP here.
>>930311
This is not a solution. This is the current problem.

>>930312
A tube to the toilet is great, but I live in a basement. Having to run a hose up steps and around the corner will be problematic. That's why I need a hardy plant. The only real light down here illuminates from my monitor.

asked in another thread yesterday but nobody answered so lets try this again,

I don't know much about electronics.
I'm curious about t8 ledtubes and have aquired 3.
I have a cable with wich I can hook one of the lamps straight to a multisocket.
is there a cable with wich I can connect a further tube to the first one , so both work, or do I have to feed the second one back into the socket.

also, is there a cable equivalent that I can use to hook one up to the cables that come from the wall , like I would normaly hook up a lamp ( sorry for the weird way of saying this, german here) is it maybe a g13 socket ?

There are two different types of LED tubes:

Ones that behave like a fluorescent bulb, so you can just put them in tube fittings and they work

Ones that just look like fluorescent tubes so they fit in tube fittings but you have to wire the bulb fitting straight to the mains, without any of the fluorescent ballast.

It sounds like your tubes are the second type, which means you can run a second bulb's mains lead from either end of the first bulb's mains lead, and so-on. This is called connecting them in "parallel".

There'll be terminals inside the tube fitting for you to do this; just use proper mains lead and match the colours. If your fittings have a green/yellow earth wire, you need to connect this all the way back to the wall too, for safety.

Just wanted to share the little angled wooden stand for my Korg electribe I made from scrap wood today.

This is my first actual wood work since shop class at school (10+ years ago). It turned out quite good but I regret having used cheap wood. But you barely see anything of it so I guess it does okay.

Nice, you should weight it so it stays more firmly in place when you are using it. Or maybe add some grip material to the underside

The machine weighs 1.6kg so there's enough friction. I may add some rubber feet at the back.
